There things take my time and energy
Don't stand too close without apologies
Cutthroat, cut out candid glimpses and
Wind me up, I'm ready
Can't escape this line of best fit
I remember being inside something more than you

General Comment:Love this song. So sad. I always thought the high vocals was Ben doing it in falsetto but it said in the booklet that it was a girl.

General Comment:This my second favourite song by them... it can be listened to and interpeted in so many different ways depending on what mood you are in.

General Comment:This song is so wistful and beautiful--it's one of my favorite Death Cab for Cutie songs ever. It never gets old. I love the notes played at the beginning and in the background--the strained chords that fade into existence. I wish I knew the instrument they used to play them. Anyway, I love the music so much...and Abi Hall was the female vocalist. For the longest time I thought all the vocals were by Ben Gibbard, like he was harmonizing or something.

General Comment:you know, ive wondered if "i remember being inside something
more than you" is a sexual reference...
hes in a relationship that used to mean more to him,
it used to be more than just sex to him...
    maybe

    General Comment:absolutely gorgeous.

"I remember being inside something more than you"
the female vocals at the end are so beautiful and hushed.
does anyone know who sings that part?

there's two versions of this song, one off of Something About Airplanes, and one off of You Can Play These Songs With Chords; I prefer the first one.

also, by 'line of best fit', I think he's maybe saying that the relationship goes through very good and very bad times, and that the average of them (which is, on a graph, called the line of best fit) is neither good nor bad, it just feels like nothing.

General Comment:this song for me is like a stream of conciousness when im sitting in math class.
the line of best fit taking up my time and energies
and the other lyrics are just whats going on in the day..
its like youre sitting there and you honestly dont care about whatever is going on & probably dont understand.

General Comment:I think the song could be referring to a relationship the narrator has had that has now soured or ended, and the symbolism of the line of best fit is that he can't seem to break from what he believes seems to always happen to him - that he can't sustain a long relationship with someone. As the line describes the average of the data, defining it, in the same way no matter how close he gets to breaking from the average he is unable to break from the line of best fit. Or so is what I think. :)
