I am
Doll eyes
Doll mouth
Doll legs
I am
Doll arms
Big veins
Dog beg

Yeah, they really want you
They really want you
They really do
Yeah, they really want you
They really want you
But I do too

I want to be the girl with the most cake
I love him so much it just turns to hate
I fake it so real, I am beyond fake
And someday, you will ache like I ache
Someday, you will ache like I ache

I am
Doll parts
Bad skin
Doll heart
It stands for knife
For the rest of my life

Yeah, they really want you
They really want you
They really do
Yeah, they really want you
They really want you
But I do, too

I want to be the girl with the most cake
He only loves those things
Because he loves to see them break
I fake it so real, I am beyond fake
And someday, you will ache like I ache
And someday, you will ache like I ache
Someday you will ache you like I ache

And someday, you will ache like I ache
And someday, you will ache like I ache
And someday, you will ache like I ache
And someday, you will ache like I ache
Someday, you will ache like I ache

General Comment:It's been said that Kurt inspired this song. It's obviously not about his death, considering Courtney wrote it in 1991, I'm pretty sure of it. She felt rejected, she said, so she wrote this song as a response. Beautiful, haunting song.

General Comment:Ugh, love this song! these lyrics just kill me. such a beautiful song.

i have never felt so connected to an artist's lyrics as much as courtney's. she just speaks to me...

My Interpretation:I have always found this song haunting.

It has the same foreshadowing connotations as Nirvana's Come As You Are ("and I swear that I don't have a gun") with "Some day you will ache like I ache". I never subscribed to the conspiracy theory that she killed him, but then I hear this song again....

She's feeling like she's being treated like just another placeholder for Kurt's selfish needs, just a physical object with no real feelings that can be hurt. She talks about how she wants to be the center of attention and treated like a star instead. When I read that she revealed the song to be about Kurt, it made sense that she was jealous of his groupies and upset about how he acted. I get chills down my spine when she says that someday he'll hurt as bad as she does, and she clearly feels so hurt that she feels like she died (the music says this more than the lyrics). Kurt's suicide has been the center of controversy ever since it happened, and it makes you wonder if her jealousy had maybe taken control over her to the point of orchestrating his death. Stranger things have happened... this is more depressing and creepy than anything.

My Interpretation:Taking into consideration what I know about Courtney Love's life, I've always took this song as being about yearning for love and not getting it (or at least not thinking you are going to get it). It encapsulates that romantic hopelessness that I've felt my whole life, so it really resonates with me personally.

Throughout the whole song you get the sense that she's attacking herself because she feels unworthy and empty (like a doll), hence the "bad skin", "big veins", and other bodily criticisms. She takes it a step further by blaming herself for wanting and expecting too much ("I want to be the girl with the most cake"), and although she can pretend all she wants ("I fake it so real I am beyond fake"), there's still that inner turmoil and loneliness seething inside her.

The "someday you will ache like I ache" is kind of like wishful thinking, like she's telling herself that her emptiness and pain will someday be felt by those who in the current moment are fulfilled.

It's really, really sad, and I think the reason that it remains one of Hole's most popular songs is because it perfectly describes an almost-universal feeling: the feeling of being alone, and desperately wanting someone by your side.

General Comment:Courtney has stated this is about Kurt and their early courtship.
She thought Kurt cheated on her and was hurt by this, so she wrote this song about how she was in love with him and how he just rejected her for some poser girl.

And it's Dog Beg not Dog Bait. Courtney stated the line was about a dog begging for food.

Song Meaning:I know this isn't analysis; as a fervent Hole fan, I have their complication album "My Body, the Hand Grenade" and many of their prerecordings have different lyrics than the official songs.

This song, in particular, has a major difference: instead of 'I love him so much it just turns to hate', it's 'I love him so much it just turns to rape'. Personally, I think that augments her desperation even more so and the word 'rape' has such a violent connotation on its own. It's curious as to what she meant by 'love' - physically or emotionally?

    Absolutely brilliant song, nevertheless.

General Comment:it's about kurt. specifically living in his shadow. they really want you is referring to kurt's popularity. while she was just there, acknowledged but not particularly cared for. when the whole world thinks your husband is this great person and they hate you it will make you bitter.

also, if the album was released 4 days after kurt's death then it was definitely recorded long before then. it has nothing to do with his death, it's about their relationship with each other and with the public.

someday you will ache like i ache. she's bitter. she wants him to ache. and someday he may have. i'd say that she was proven right, but not in the way she intended.

and as far as the courtney killing kurt thing goes. she didn't shoot him. but if this song is any indication, their private relationship may not have been very healthy. it's hard to be in a relationship with somebody who's envious of you and bitter about what you have. and it may have factored into his decision. but we'll never know for sure.

General Comment:the first (and second and third) time I heard this, I thought "you will ache like I ache" was "someday, you will act like our age" and it made so much sense to me.

My Interpretation:I think it is a song about what you will feel like in the future. Right now you are really superficial, and popular...but just really fake (like parts of a doll). Right now you are on top of the world, but one day you will ache like she aches.
