You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah

The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn't get much higher

Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire

General Comment:What is strange about this song is that when you read the printed lyrics they seem shallow and repetitive. It is the melody and rhythm that bring power to this song. The lyrics alone do not stand as poetry...

I dislike when radio stations play the shortened version - you miss the wonderful interplay-interweaving of the guitar and the organ in that long interlude before the vocals come back in.

On another note - Jim Morrison is the idol-god of teenage existentialists and youth-rebels. He offers something that seems like wisdom, especially if you are high or tripping, but when you actually try to determine what you are gaining from his words it is revealed as a semi-coherent mish-mash of merely rebellious Rock'nRoll posings. "Break on through", "The end is always near", "End of the night" - what the hell did he mean by all that?
Dunno - but it sure sounds good when you are 17 years old and on hallucinogens

Like Jimi, Janis, and the all others right up to Amy W, Jim Morrison was a pied piper and a false prophet who perished in his own self-infatuated excess.
He and his kind lead toward destruction if you take their music to its ultimate conclusion.

General Comment:I love this song and I adore the Doors. Spent my college years listening to Morrison's music. He's right up there with Freddie Prince, only straight:) Whenever I light candles at night, I think of this song. It's a great tune...a classic.

General Comment:Once you reach a certain age this song can have more than one meaning. Last night I had to have a man "light my fire" (i.e. a never used backyard fire pit). This song was perfect :) The Doors were one of my favorite college bands back in the 80's; their music wasn't old then and I doubt it ever will be due to Jim Morrison's amazing talent. How I would love a date (a type of threesome:) with Jim Morrison; Freddy Prince; and Tim Buckley. Man, we would shoot the bull all night long. I would be in Heaven (and quite literally, I suppose, due to all three greats no longer being with us.)

General Comment:Since the late 70's I have been a big Jim Morrison fan. The music of The Doors always intrigued me. For me, this is a simple song about wanting to let loose and live (sex wise). I have to smile after reading Asciipornstar's review...very deep from someone with that user name and who probably is wilder than most :D

General Comment:I have struggled with Jim morrisons death for ages! I remember devouring Light My Fire the book when I finally got my hands on it in 1987. How could he die? Someone had to have killed him and I blamed it on Pam until last night. I watched the Jim Morrison movie which I had always believed I had watched! But last night almost seemed like the first time I had really watched it. And I understood why he died. Because he could. Not that he meant to die! But more accidently. Just got alittle bit too much drug, like my brother, and poof, gone! Although I have to believe Jim almost knew what he was doing. My little brother wasn't that...conscious.

Song Meaning:Well, I had an English Teacher in high School who told the class that the lyrics to this song were inspired by the short story "The Boarding House" by James Joyce. The character in the story is a tenet in a boarding house and he has a thing with the owner's daughter - At one point she asks if he can "light her fire" for her candle.
Who knows if that's true or not.

I agree with paraless. these lines may mean that love might not last forever. and the first 2 lines basically mean make good use of your time together, live your life together adventurously and be impulsive. the last two lines, eventually, love will die out, like a funeral pyre. great simillie.
