Well, the clock says it's time to close now
I guess I'd better go now
I'd really like to stay here all night
The cars crawl past all stuffed with eyes
Street lights share their hollow glow
Your brain seems bruised with numb surprise
Still one place to go
Still one place to go
Let me sleep all night in your soul kitchen
Warm my mind near your gentle stove
Turn me out and I'll wander baby
Stumblin' in the neon groves
Well, your fingers weave quick minarets
Speak in secret alphabets
I light another cigarette
Learn to forget, learn to forget
Learn to forget, learn to forget
Let me sleep all night in your soul kitchen
Warm my mind near your gentle stove
Turn me out and I'll wander baby
Stumblin' in the neon groves
Well the clock says it's time to close now
I know I have to go now
I really want to stay here
All night, all night, all night

General Comment:A man, is in his girlfriend's home and he likes to stay layed on the couch with his head above her lap looking at the ceiling and thinking in nothing while she caress his head and hair with her fingers. As her parents live there and is late on night, he has to out but outside is not better than stay there.

General Comment:I think it's about him being stoned out at the restaurant one of the first people posted, but with a little deeper meaning thrown in there. It talks about how they're closing and how he has to go, but he doesn't want to, he's afraid he'll stumble around outside and feel paranoid when the cars go by. In the chorus he talks about sleeping all night there and warming his mind, where he isn't just talking about staying there but wanting to stay in the state of mind he's in all night long,

General Comment:all of the meanings you can think of are correct. it's hardly possible to read too much into poetry. in fact' that's why jim's such a genius: his lyirics can be read in so many ways and mean something different to each listener. if this song had only one meaning (e.g. a dinner),it wouldn't be nothing more than the ramblings of a raveling drunk.

by the way, patti smith covers this song, highly recomendable

General Comment:It's a play on meanings, but this song is about leaving a lover. I never researched it, but I'd guess that the "Soul Kitchen" was a real all-night bar/restaurant, where Jim Morrison used to hang out. At about the same time, he probably had an affair going with some chick. In the song, he is reflecting back on a simpler, happier time in his life. However, all good things must come to an end, and we must learn to forget, and move on. The song has symbolic meaning, as well. It's nicely writen.
