Jet, Jet
Jet I can almost remember their funny faces
That time you told them you were going to marrying soon
And Jet I thought the only lonely place was the moon

Jet Jet Jet

Jet was your father as bold as the sergeant major
How come he told you that you were hardly old enough yet
And Jet I thought the major was a lady suffragette

Jet Jet Jet

Ah Mater want Jet to always love me
Ah Mater want Jet to always love me
Ah Mater, much later
Jet

And Jet I thought the major was a lady suffragette
Jet Jet

Ah Mater want Jet to always love me
Ah Mater want Jet to always love me
Ah Mater...much later

Jet with the wind in your hair
Of a thousand laces
Climb on the back and we'll go for a ride in the sky
And Jet I thought the major was a little lady suffragette

Jet-Jet-Jet
And Jet you know I thought you was a little lady suffragette
Jet
A little lady
My little lady, yes

My Opinion:I am Paul McCartney's adopted son, and he told me that "Jet" is about a time he was asked by the royal navy to fly with them for a publicity stunt, and he thought they were all like women, so he called them suffragettes as a joke, and he got high (high high) one night thinking about it and it all came out as a pot-induced stream-of-consciousness joke that he put to music. It means that he was high. When he sings "Ah Mater", it's really "Ah Vader". He's talking about Darth Vader, but he had to obscure it a little. He had seen an advance copy of the script for Star Wars, and George Lucas had sworn him to secrecy. But he couldn't help himself. Love you, dad.

General Comment:lady suffragette: Nothing to do with suffering, folks. A lady suffragette is someone who believes women should have the right to vote, and by extension, all rights that a man has. The singer is saying that he thought the major believed in a woman's right to run her own life, so why was he opposing her desire to be with him?

General Comment:He started writing it about his horse. Then it changed into a song about a woman with marital problems.

General Comment: To be a bit more precise about "their funny faces"; when she told him that she would be marrying soon, they thought that she was saying in a round-about way that she was pregnant. Her father,"the Major" was worried that this boy(who he did not approve of)was leading his sweet, innocent, young daughter down the primrose path of carnal knowledge. -and he probably was.

General Comment:Mccartney was interviewed on TV and said that Jet was their horse, hence:

"Jet! With The Wind In Your Hair Of A Thousand Laces.
Climb On The Back And We'll
Go For A Ride In The Sky."

Then he changed the song to be about a person!

Song Meaning: jet and this boy were probly at a family social of some kind when she told him that she would be marrying soon. They were all shocked when they heard her say this hence the "funny faces". Her father "as bold as a sergeant major" spoke up and made a show in front of them all and told her that she was too young. He told her that she is forbidden to ever see him again. Jet was broken hearted because she loved him and he found out that the world can be a lonelier place than the moon without her. He would go to Mass and pray to Mother Mary that Jet would always love him and that one day they could get married.Time passed and their love for each other never faded. They would meet(against her parents wishes) and planned to elope. Her hair and wedding vail blowing in the wind on the back of his motor bike.He believed her father was a "lady suffragette" because he did'nt care how unhappy she was. They wanted to hop on a jet-plane and fly away.Probly to the U.S. and live their own lives. After all, isn't that in a way what Paul and Linda did?

General Comment:I was thinking about the idea that the line "I thought the Major was a lady suffragette" was a reference to David Bowie, the "Major" being Major Tom and "suffragette" being his song Suffragette City. I soon found out that Suffragette City was released two years after this song. Although an interesting interpretation brought up by a previous poster, I think the "Major" and "suffragette" have much more literal meanings to go with the rest of the lyrics.

General Comment:I don't know about the dog but this is how I've always seen this song.

"Jet! I Can Almost Remember Their Funny Faces
That Time You Told Me That
You Were Going To Be Marrying Soon.
And Jet, I Thought The Only
Lonely Place Was On The Moon.
    Jet! Jet! "

He remembers how shocked he was when a girl he loves told him that she is going to marry someone else soon. He thought that the moon was the loneliest place but now he feels really lonely knowing he lost her.

"Jet! Was Your Father As Bold As A Sergeant Major?
How Come He Told You That
You Were Hardly Old Enough Yet?
And Jet, I Thought The Major
    Was A Lady Suffragette.
    Jet! Jet!"

In this part he is say that he had asked to marry her before but according to her, her father told her she wasn't old enough. Thats why he says that he thought her father was for lady suffering. But now he knows that she just made it up as an excuse since she's marrying someone else.

"Ah, Matter, Want Jet To Always Love Me?
Ah, Matter, Want Jet To Always Love Me?
    Ah, Matter, Much Later. "

He is breaking down and he still wants her to love him eventhough it has been much later.

"Jet! With The Wind In Your Hair Of A Thousand Laces.
Climb On The Back And We'll
Go For A Ride In The Sky.
And Jet, I Thought The Major
    Was A Lady Suffragette.
    Jet! Jet! "

He wants to give them another chance but he repeats that he thought her father was for lady suffering. In other words he's going back to the second part and saying that she lied to him and he knows she doesn't love him.

General Comment:The folks above are quite correct about this song being about Paul's dog.

Also, Paul is not quite saying "Want Jet to always love me". He is saying, "Veux Jet to always love me." "Veux" is French for "want". So, the meaning doesn't change. But if you listen, especially to the live version from his "Back in the U.S." concert, you can clearly hear that the word after "Mater" begins with a noticeable "V" sound, not the "W" sound necessary for the word to be "want".
