Lyrics for Pepper as interpreted by knate15

Pepper Lyrics
Mikey got with Sharon, Sharon got Cherise
As she was sharin' Sharon's outlook on the topic of disease
Mikey had a facial scar and Bobby was a racist
They were all in love with dying, they were doing it in Texas
Tommy played piano like a kid out in the rain
And then he lost his leg in Dallas, he was dancing with a train

They were all in love with dying
They were drinking from a fountain
That was pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

I don't mind the sun sometimes, the images it shows
I can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and sugary and softly spoken lies
You never know just how to look through other people's eyes

Some will die in hot pursuit in fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit while sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche, coming down the mountain

I don't mind the sun sometimes, the images it shows
I can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and sugary and softly spoken lies
You never know just how you look through other people's eyes

Another Mikey took a knife while arguing in traffic
Flipper died a natural death he caught a nasty virus
Then there was the ever present football-player rapist
They were all in love with dying, they were doing it in Texas
Paulie caught a bullet but it only hit his leg
While it should've been a better shot, got him in the head

They were all in love with dying
They were drinking from a fountain
That was pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

I don't mind the sun sometimes, the images it shows
I can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and sugary and softly spoken lies
You never know just how you look through other people's eyes

I have to disagree with the people that don't think this song has any meaning. I've noticed that alot of butthole surfers song have one or two lines of intelligent insight among a shitload of silly lyrics.

Like "you never know just how you look through other peoples' eyes." I think maybe the point is either

A) to jolt some sense into people whose mind only contain silly bullshit thoughts

or

B) show that wisdom is actually just another random arrangent of words

it's totally against the whole "live for the moment" mentality. it's telling you life is shit, and that people who don't think and just "live for now" are really in love with death... or something..... arrrrrrrrrrrr

I think this song is about people who live on the edge, but the singer has met someone (a girl) and he doesn't wanna live on the edge anymore cuz then he wouldn't get to see her. It's kinda implied in the chorus
"I dont mind the sun sometimes
The images it shows
I can taste you on my lips
And smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and sugary as softly spoken lies
You never know just how you look
Through other people's eyes"
He's sayin that he doesn't mind slowing down and enjoying the warm sun.

But it is also about living life to the extreme.
"Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountian
That is pouring like and avalance coming down the mountian"
These people like life so much that they can't get enough of it.

Me and my friend have tried to figure out what this song means for the longest time, but I think the chorus is talking about how he's with a girl and he can really see who she is. The "images" the sun shows is who she really is. She's beautiful and seductive, but she's a fake. No one is taking the time to look at who she is, so they make up their opinions based on the little they know.

As for the rest of the song...I think it's about youth and how teens are so obsessed with dying and depression and they eventually commit suicide. "They were all in love with dying, they were drinking from a fountain that was pouring like an avalanche, coming down the mountain". Also, it talks about innocent teens who love life, but end up dying anyway due to teen angst "Holly caught a bullet but it only hit his leg, while it should have been a better shot and got him in the head".

There are alot of good ideas like mezdispencers, and im just onna expand upon it a little. The main part of the song is about how kids enjoy that life on the edge, but it catches up to them eventially

"they were drinkin' from a fountain
That was pouring like an avalanche,
coming down the mountain."
the water and the fountain are the things that hurt them but they still do anyway, but they eventually will ge washed away when the avalanche washes them away.
the chorus is about how it's good to slow down and look at life, and the last like is saying "look at it through other people's eyes"because you have to see what you look like doing all these crazy kid things... (but he's not saying to stop, just to think about it)

Could it be that these guys made the song up from the reading the obits in the newspaper? I have a strange feeling that the "ever present football player rapist" could be a cutting reference at the Dallas Cowboys.

I dont know if anyone else thinks this, but in the first chorus that he sings in the song it sounds to me like "You never know just how to look through other people's eyes" and then the other times he says you never know just how u look through other people's eyes. maybe its just me..... but yea this song kicks ass! it always puts me in such a trance....

Awesome Song. I've been listening to the band a lot more recently. I don't know.. I think the thing about a girl is a bit of a stetch.

"Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountian that is pouring like an avalanche, coming down the mountain"
I think this says that Life is a giant and unstoppable force and that it's easier to be dead then to live the struggles of life.

This song is about heroin. Like really really obviously about heroin. "I can taste you on my lips and smell you on my clothes cinnamon and sugary..." If you've ever been around or been a junkie you don't forget that not quite opium not quite cinnamon reek and the smell really is so sweet you can taste it. Knowing this the rest of the song is pretty easy to decipher. Junkies tend to have short ugly lives unless they stop being junkies(choose life)"Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain"

oh and doesn't anyone remember the big 20/20 heroin hits texas hard story that came out about a year before this song did? Look it up and you'll find a lot of similarities between it and this song.

I think that this song is about some kind of drug...somebody said heroin...
but other than that I just think it's about the fact that some people choose the "wrong path" in life but it's never too late to change it....

yeah, i'd say herion...
but heres somthing u might or might not find interesting, if this song is played in reverse... about 1.23 minutes into the song (while played in reverse) is the same guitar solo near the end of the song (while played forwerd) even better is 2.23 minutes into the song (while in reverse)... it says says the lines
"I don't mind the sun sometimes the images it shows " and "You never know just how you look through other people's eyes"
so maybe there is some emphasis on those lines?

take time to enjoy life. this is the transcendentalist song of the music world.... "i can taste you on my lips and smell you in my clothes"

this could be a good sex song. maybe.
