Burning inside
(I cross myself
It doesn't help)
Because I'm not smart enough
(I'm digging into
Hot white)
Learning not to lie
(we cross it out
And stay away)

Burning inside
We cross it out and stay away

General Comment:Maybe it really is about drugs, I don't know, but because of its religious imagery and the motif of disillusionment and/or devastation ("I cross myself, it doesn't help..." etc.) it seems to me that this song is somehow connected with "(I Got a) Catholic Block".

General Comment:"White Cross" is also a painting by Marc Chagall.

I'll agree with the idea that it's about drug addiction, considering it was probably written around 1985 during one of Sonic Youth's darkest periods...

    General Comment:erik is wrong
    white cross is a drug
kind of like speed in pill form
being a drug addict myself, i'm pretty sure that's what it is about

General Comment:I think it's about the disillusionment of religion, namely Christianity. Gets to the point: "I cross myself it doesn't help me" to "we cross it out and stay away". I guess it could be taken other ways, but it's one of the best on Sister.
