[Thurston]
Another can of worms
another stomach turns
yeah your ghetto burns
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate

you got a stupid man
you got a ku klux klan
your fucking battleplan
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate

a sieg heil-in' squirt
you're an impotent jerk
yeah a fascist twerp
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate

black robe and swill
i believe Anita Hill
judge will rot in hell
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate

yeah a cross on fire
by a christian liar
a black attack at fire
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate

yeah the president sucks
he's a war pig fuck
his shit is out of luck
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate

another nazi attack
skinhead is cracked
my blood is black
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate

we're banging pots and pans
to make you understand
we gotta bury you man
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate

i'm a human wreck
redneck in check
i killed the teacher's pet
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate
it's the song i hate

General Comment:"It's the song I hate"

Does it mean that the song of hate is the song that they hate?
Or does it mean that it's the music of faux punk bands that they hate? (Basically saying 'I agree with your ideas, but it's your music that I hate.)
    Or is there another explanation?

Not knowing the answer is bothering me.

My Interpretation:I agree with SantiagoF I don't think this song is about having a pop at the bands on the music scene at all. I think the 'song' he is referring to hating is the song of hate being sung by war mongering presidents and organisations like the KKK. I don't think Sonic Youth would 'tongue in cheek' diss anti-nazi bands for not considering their positions well enough. I think they would see an anti-fascist stance as natural and proper in a correctly functioning mind regardless of musical talent.

    If anything the lines;

    we're banging pots and pans
    to make you understand
    we gotta bury you man

Is a statement of how Sonic Youth will use their art to make a difference and is a call to arms for more bands to take a stand against the 'song' of hate like themselves and Fugazi have.

General Comment:As for "The song I hate", replace "song" for "situation" or something similar and it's easy to see it.

General Comment:For me, this is simply an anti-hate song. The guy's talking about all the shitty time during 1991-1992, all the violence and hate out there (the L.A. 1992 riots spring to mind), even making references to the Anita Hill case and the first Gulf War, which is the "shit (that) went out of luck" for Bush senior.

He takes some lines to bash people and organizations who use hate as a basis for their actions (Nazis, KKK, etc).

It's like a portrait of the U.S. burning down in 1992, the general feel at the time. Something easily reflected in almost all of Dirty. Brilliant.

General Comment:I think, that atthedrive-in is mostly right.
The song is about the recurrent "political" songs of the kiddies' wanna-be punkabands, who have not got a clue what is really going around in the world.
They hear, that the president is hated by a group of people they would like to belong to and think they would be cool by recording such songs...
It is the adjustment, that opeople have... "We have to write a song to show our situation, and to make somebody do something against it"
Well... everybody knowas the situation, but nobody still is doing something.
I think thatn is the point, that enerves Thurston to write that song.

    @ choqq:
I am sure it is "impotent jerk"! also form the context.. Have you not ever heard, that Hitler had only one testicle? ... =)

    @mrfisto:
That does not make any sense.. As he wrote the song he did not have the thought, that he would not like the song. And why should it be re-writed when it would go on the record? Just to show, that it is a bad song?
It simply makes no sense to me..

General Comment:atthedrivein is pretty much saying exactly what i thought to. I'm not like a big sonic youth fan or anything just have 'dirty' and i was thinking that if my interpretation of the song was right it was a great song, if it wasn't then this band can't write worth shit

General Comment:And by the way, I am so stupid that I am unable to comprehend the fact that we have had two George Bush presidents. Sorry about that.

General Comment:fuzzyslippers, I hate to burst your bubble, but Dirty came out in the early 90s. I pretty much agree with atthedrive-in, myself. His delivery is both tongue-in-cheek and earnest at the same time.

General Comment:Thurston actually didn't want to put this song on the record because he didn't like it. The rest of the band insisted, so that's why it's the "song I hate".
