San Francisco Bay
Past pier thirty nine
Early p.m.
Can't remember what time
Got the waiting cab
Stopped at the red light
Address, unsure of
But it turned out just right

It started straight off
"Coming here is hell"
That's his first words
We asked what he meant
He said " where ya' from ?"
We told him our lot
"When ya' take a holiday
Is this what you want ?"

So have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day

Lie around all day
Have a drink to chase
"Yourself and tourists, yeah
That's what I hate"
He said "We're going wrong
We've all become the same
We dress the same ways
Only our accents change"

So have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day

Swim in the ocean
That be my dish
I drive around all day
And kill processed fish
It's all money gum
No artists anymore
You're only in it now
To make more, more, more

So have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day

Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day?

General Comment:I think neenzabeen is on the right track with respect to the meaning of this song. To me it seems to have an ironic or double meaning. On the one hand Kelly Jones thinks the cab driver is an ignaramous who is giving him a hard time when he is on holiday but on the other the things he says to him make such an impression that he has to write a song about it. The easy listening, sugary sweet sound to the song belies the powerful message that is contained in the lyrics. It's like a confession from the singer that there may be some truth in what the cab driver is saying, and it is a wry comment on human nature that we all tend to choose the easy option in life sometimes rather than exploring an alternative that may be more difficult and challenging.

I think this reference is to to taxi driver seeing them as being the same as all the others - he just drives around all day bad mouthing all the "processed" artists that use the same formula to become successful (thinking X-Factor or Pop Stars here).

General Comment:I love it when songs which get infinite radio play echo some kind of bitter meaning. This is just the latest in a long line.

    Very interesting comments too.

General Comment:Yeah, the have a nice day bit is obviously a dig at how fake the consumerist society is. I thought that before I knew the lyrics. And I kept hearing "I kill processed fish" and thinking "WHAT THE HELL?" I wish I knew what that bit in the song means. The rest of it makes sense though.

General Comment:Basically, a sweet-sounding song to Americans, sarcastic to Brits - wishing someone a nice day is lovely, if sincere - not just stated verbatim to everyone.

General Comment:I've always known this song but, I never actually listened to the lyrics except for 'have a nice day'. It's always just been a sweet soudning song and it was the song that for some reason erupted in my head when I was younger, having my first kiss... It was such a great moment and for some reason this song was playing in my head and, though I realise now that it's not a love song, whenever I hear it, I'm reminded of that first, wonderful, and unforgettable kiss. :)

General Comment:This song is bittersweet to me. Makes me remember of the year it was released, 2001, and how smooth they sounded to me. So it would make me smile, but in a sad way, cause the lyrics itself are kind of dark in my opinion. I still love it, and find Stereophonics particularly appealing.

General Comment:It's about a taxi driver who told them all this rubbish about "selling out" and stuff. But at the end of the journey he said something like "that'll be $75, have a nice day." So he ended up being the hypocrit by charging an extortionate price for a short taxi journey after what he'd said previously.

The song isn't happy but somehow it got radio friendly. Kelly Jones hates the song now cos of this.

General Comment:first heard this song on a sunny day when i was at uni and it just made the day better. it's always played when the suns shining and it brings a smile to ur face and anything that can do that in Luton (an English town) must be good.
