I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
San Francisco Bay, past pier thirty-nine
Early PM, can't remember what time
Got the waiting cab stopped at the red light
Address, unsure of but it turned out just right
It started straight off, "coming here is Hell"
That's his first words, we asked what he meant
He said, "Where you from?" we told him a lot
We take a holiday, is this what you want?
To have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Lie around all day, have a drink to chase
Yourself and tourists, yeah, that's what I hate
He said, "We're going wrong", we've all become the same
We dress the same ways, only our accents change
So have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Swim in the ocean, that be my dish
I drive around all day and kill processed fish
It's all money gum, no artists anymore
You're only in it now to it make more, more and more
So have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day
Have a nice day

Just A Little Lovin'

I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
Indeed this is a song about an actual cab ride taken by the boys in SF. And listening to Kelly speak about him, he definately did NOT like the guy. I think it's against songmeanings.net's acceptable use policy to actually repeat Kelly's words verbatim but something along the lines of "He spent his whole damn **ing life in that cab, and I hope the *** never leaves it" By all accounts the cab driver was very critical of them ("No artists anymore / You're only in it now / To make more, more, more") and anything else he could bring to mind, venting his spleen on almost any topic he could. After the cab ride, he put on a big smile and said "Have a Nice Day" as if he hadn't just ranted at them! So that in essence is what this song is about, the big 'smiling-face' americanism which is so false it's become habit for so many people no matter what we really think or say.
I think this was a true story of a cab ride Kelly Jones took in San Francisco once. The cab driver was telling him how he was sick of everybody selling out and only being in life to make money.
ever thought of the lyrics of the song as being sarcastic? the cab driver is preaching the how horrible life is and sarcastically says "have a nice day" almost to mock their ignorance and nieve behavior. the cab driver is trying to tell them that there is more to life then there obvious attempt to just want money. ("No artists anymore, You're only in it now, To make more, more, more") Whether or not the band disliked this guy or is trying to pass on his message is the only thing i am wondering about...
I think neenzabeen is on the right track with respect to the meaning of this song. To me it seems to have an ironic or double meaning. On the one hand Kelly Jones thinks the cab driver is an ignaramous who is giving him a hard time when he is on holiday but on the other the things he says to him make such an impression that he has to write a song about it. The easy listening, sugary sweet sound to the song belies the powerful message that is contained in the lyrics. It's like a confession from the singer that there may be some truth in what the cab driver is saying, and it is a wry comment on human nature that we all tend to choose the easy option in life sometimes rather than exploring an alternative that may be more difficult and challenging.
"It's like a confession from the singer that there may be some truth in what the cab driver is saying, and it is a wry comment on human nature that we all tend to choose the easy option in life sometimes rather than exploring an alternative that may be more difficult and challenging."<br /> <br /> Hi BuzzAlrdin - <br /> This interpretation is interesting. Actually I had to comment because I thought exactly the same thing when listening to this song. What I wanted to ask you however is, where exactly does he say this - "we all tend to choose the easy option in life sometimes rather than exploring an alternative that may be more difficult and challenging" - in the song? I have read the lyrics 10 times and cannot see anything that points to this message.!
When i saw them in concert Kelly said that this song was about an annoying cab driver who was basically a real prick.
I think that violetzebras has a point. I too think that the song is about this Francisco-cabdriver who's really sick and tired of his life at the time. And I think that these songs about "everydaylife-trouble" are really good. Another song about "everydaylife-trouble" I like a lot is "Pinch me" by Barenaked Ladies, try to check it out...
I have their CD "enough education to perform" and it says in it :" ...after sitting in the back of a cab listening to the driver talk about what he called 'corporate communism'.A very interesting man.." So LIVEURLIFE,after reading your comment I must say that kelly is a damn hypocrit I thought he was amazed by the guy specially that I see no sarcasm in it...
I completely agree with phoreverman. I havent researched anything on any song though. I'm just here to make an *** of myself. Unfortunately, I dont have a funny comment for this.
this song always puts me in a really good mood.
buffy.. what the fuck? this is one of the most depressing songs....
