Lyrics for The Boys Of Summer as interpreted by Demau Senae

The Boys Of Summer Lyrics
Nobody on the road
nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
the summer's out of reach
Empty lake,
empty streets
the sun goes down alone
I'm drivin' by your house
Though I know you're not home
But I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
You got your hair combed back and your
sunglasses on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you
will still be strong after the boys of
summer have gone
I never will forget those nights
I wonder if it was a dream
Remember how you made me crazy?
Remember how I made you scream?
Now I don't understand what's happened
to our love,
But babe, I'm gonna get you back
I'm gonna show you what I'm made of
I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
I see you walkin' real slow and you're smilin' at everyone
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
after the boys of summer have gone
Out on the road today I saw a DEADHEAD sticker
on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head said, "Don't
look back. You can never look back."
I thought I knew what love was,
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but-
I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
You got that top pulled down and that radio on baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
after the boys of summer have gone
I can see you-
Your brown skin shining in the sun
You got that hair slicked back and
those Wayfarers on, baby
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
after the boys of summer have gone

This song is obviously about the passing of youth. As summer turns to fall, youth also passes to middle age. "Out on the road today I saw a DEADHEAD sticker
on a Cadillac" He realizes that youth is gone because even deadheads have grown up and are even driving cadillacs.

This song is the ultimate summer song for the youth. regardless who wrote it and don henley is an amazing artist. This song will always represent the beach and being young, not wanting to grow up and seeing a deadhead sticker on a cadillac. its also a great love song. Saying hey ill love you for the rest of your life, it not so many words of course. just an all together great song for all generations who love great music.

I can remember hearing this song when I was just a little kid (parents are big Henley fans). From then till now it has been one of my favorite songs. Whenever I hear it reminds me of a busteling beach town during the second week of September when everyone has gone back to work and school. Summers= innocence, carefree days, and love. This song is about when that all ends. But even though the girl's tan will fade and they will grow up, he will still love her.

I love this song! Don Henley is a music God! He's an amazing artist and this song is sooo much fun to listen to and sing along in the summer. It just gives you that happy innocent feeling of summer and love and the way you want to feel. It always brings a smile to my face. Don't get me wrong, i LOVE the Ataris, and i loved them long before they did a cover of this song, but no version can compare to Don Henley's original.

Well... I think people are getting the wrong meaning from these lyrics. Furthuko was right on! This isn't about youth or summer. Its about the passing of youth of love of time and of innocence.

"Out on the road today I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadilac. A little voice inside my head said don't look back you can never look back" is one of the greatest symbolic lines in all of rock. It says "look how much things have changed". this line always gives me chills!

It might be a great beach song but it always felt to me like an end of summer sort of melancholy song. It's a guy saying to a girl "I remember what it used to be like. I can still picture the young and tan you on the beach. I loved you then, I love you still and when you're done trying to hang on to the endless summer I'm still gonna be here".

Ferthuko and liverdude are both right. This song is a melancholy look back at the narrator's past. The usage of summer as a metaphor for the carefree days of youth is perfect. This is a great song to listen to in the summer, since the guitar really gives off the feeling of summer (appropriately), but you can listen to it anytime and still feel the meaning of the song strongly. I've always loved this song and, while the Ataris did a nice take on it, you can't beat the original.

Sick Shift does a really awesome cover of this song. It's a lot more raw. I dig it.

i agree with ferthuko totally. As far as covers go, the ataris version is pretty good, but the dj sammy version is horrible (thumbs down). my favorite cover is by codeseven, they are awesome. But nothing compares to the original

To me i think the song is love in the teenage years, maybe throughout high school. and when graduation came in the summertime. The love between the two people went out the door. One of them begins to realize what is going on and begins to miss the other person. Throughout the song it talkes about all the good times they shared in the past. "I never will forget those nights
I wonder if it was a dream
Remember how you made me crazy?
Remember how I made you scream?
Now I don't understand what's happened
to our love,
But babe, I'm gonna get you back
I'm gonna show you what I'm made of
I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
I see you walkin' real slow and you're smilin' at everyone
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong"

Some of these guys are right. I think maybe, maybe loss of teenage years is right.

However, you seem to be missing a major part. What about the woman? Maybe it's a guy who is starting to realize the greatness he had with this chick. At the time he had no idea how great it was, but now he's looking back and really wishing he could have her back. I don't know, that's my take.

drummer4514's got it right on. I think this song is about a couple who was in love, but the girl broke things off over the summer, so she could mess around with other guys. He's saying that he loved her so much that he will still love her "after the boys of summer" have gone, as in, when the summers over and she realizes that she loves him too.

The "boys of summer" are baseball players.
Sometimes I imagine it as a guy being like "yeah I'll tell you I love you after the game is over."
I do admit though, this song transcends the boundaries of age.

I think maybe, maybe loss of teenage years is right, or a loss of love. Either one works, it just depends on your own interpretations.

I thought I knew what love was...what did I know? That's an awesome line. This song always reminds me of my mom because we'd listen to it when we'd go somewhere together.

A little voice inside my head said, "Don't
look back. You can never look back."

Every time I hear that, I get all depressed because I always end up thinking back to this past summer, and I end up realizing that I'll probably never see half of the people I met ever again.
