I've been run down and I've been lied to.
And I don't know why, I let that mean woman make me a fool.
She took all my money, wrecks my new car.
Now she's with one of my good time buddies,
They're drinkin in some cross-town bar.

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I been tied to the whippin' post.
Tied to the whippin' post, tied to the whippin' post.
Good Lord, I feel like I'm dyin'.

My friends tell me, that I've been such a fool.
But I had to stand by and take it baby, all for lovin' you.
Drown myself in sorrow as I look at what you've done.
But nothing seemed to change, the bad times stayed the same,
And I can't run.

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I been tied to the whippin' post.
Tied to the whippin' post, tied to the whippin' post.
Good Lord, I feel like I'm dyin'.

Sometimes I feel, sometimes I feel,
Like I been tied to the whippin' post.
Tied to the whippin' post, tied to the whippin' post.
Good Lord, I feel like I'm dyin'.

General Comment:the live version at the Fillmore East is stunning and incredibly talentedly played. 23 fucking minutes!!!! It just showed you that dickey betts and duane allman were two of the greatest guitarists in history hands down. God rest Duane's soul. forever and ever

General Comment:Lyrically speaking, this song isn't anything special - been done too many times before in that department.

But good sweet lord on a saltine cracker, if this isn't one of the best songs I've ever had the absolute pleasure of hearing in my life!

Nothing I've heard since can really compare.

General Comment:The song was written in the middle of the night on an ironing board using burnt matches. He was 20 years old when the recording was made but sings with the emotion and experience of someone much older.

General Comment:I read in the encyclopedia of rock that this song is "Gregg's acute analysis of his relationship with Duane, who responds with lashings of guitar"
