Lyrics for Life In The Fast Lane as interpreted by Demau Senae

Life In The Fast Lane Lyrics
He was a hard-headed man
He was brutally handsome, and she was terminally pretty
She held him up, and he held her for ransom in the heart
of the cold, cold city
He had a nasty reputation as a cruel dude
They said he was ruthless, they said he was crude
They had one thing in common, they were good in bed
She'd say, 'Faster, faster. The lights are turnin' red."
Life in the fast lane
Surely make you lose your mind, mm
Are you with me so far?
Eager for action and hot for the game
The coming attraction, the drop of a name
They knew all the right people, they took
all the right pills
They threw outrageous parties, they paid heavenly bills
There were lines on the mirror, lines on her face
She pretended not to notice, she was caught up
in the race

Out every evening, until it was light
He was too tired to make it, she was too tired
to fight about it

Life in the fast lane
Surely make you lose your mind
Life in the fast lane, everything all the time
Life in the fast lane, uh huh
Blowin' and burnin', blinded by thirst
They didn't see the stop sign,
took a turn for the worse

She said, "Listen, baby. You can hear the engine
ring. We've been up and down this highway;
haven't seen a goddam thing."
He said, "Call the doctor. I think I'm gonna crash."
"The doctor say he's comin', but you gotta pay him cash."
They went rushin' down that freeway,
messed around and got lost
They didn't know they were just dyin' to get off
And it was life in the fast lane
Life in the fast lane

I agree, its about a couple living life to the fullest and partying all the time and as they get older it begins to catch up with them

The problem is...the more it gets worse, the deeper they get in. As in, they go for harder drugs and just dig themselves a deeper hole living "life in the fast lane."

It's about sex, too, of course. They start out physically attracted to each other and the one thing they have in commmon is that they are both good in bed and, we can assume, very active there. Soon, they are losing their looks – there were lines on the mirror = lines on her face – but they just keep going to the parties and staying up doing the lifestyle. Soon they have nothing left of their shallow relationship at all: He is too tired to shag and she's too tired to care. It's a pretty desperate moral message, given that they are both dying of their excesses at the end without even any comfort left in each other. A really great track, of course!

According to Henley, this song is basically about what the lyrics say..."life in the fast lane." Not that difficult to see and understand!

You are all correct but some of the hidden stuff is glanced over.

"Lines on the Mirror, Lines on her Face. She pretended not to notice, she was caught up in the race."

Those are cocaine rails that are on the mirror or "lines".

The doctor is for an Overdose but you have to hush him up with cash.

Glenn Frey said he got the hook from a drug dealer he was riding with one day in LA and the guy was doing about 100 on an open freeway. When Frey said, "Hey man you're going a little too fast aren't you?"

The man replied, "That's life in the Fast Lane."

True story.

This song is about California lifestyle. Their lifestyle is all go go go, spend spend spend, non stop drug use. No thoughts of future consequences. "They didn't know they were just dyin' to get off
And it was life in the fast lane" This song much relates to the song Hotel California. They want to get off this crazed freeway, but they cant. Their locked in.

Supposedly the man and the woman in this were based on stevie nicks and lindsey buckingham from fleetwood mac.

"The doctor is for an Overdose but you have to hush him up with cash."

Actually, I understand it in relation to the line before...

"He said, 'call the dr. I think I'm gonna crash.'
The doctor said he's comin' but you gotta pay him cash."
I see it as the doctor mentioned is the drug dealer... he's about to crash (or come down) from the high and he's needing more, so call the dealer -- who, obviously, you pay in cash.

I LOVE the line "she was terminally pretty..." It gives this impression that she was doomed from the beginning type of thing.

Also, I think the line, "there were lines on her mirror, lines on her face..." is GREAT, talk about an awesome comparison.

"He was too tired to make it, she was too tired
to fight about it."
That describes the end of my last realtionship to a T.
