Lyrics for Hotel California as interpreted by Demau Senae

Hotel California Lyrics
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year, you can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes-Benz
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain,
'Please bring me my wine'
He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here
Since nineteen sixty nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
'Relax,' said the night man,
We are programmed to receive.

No it's not OK. The idea that an invisible man from outer space got an earth woman pregnant and the child of this union is the saviour of mankind is ludicrous. Add to this the idea of a place of eternal punishment reserved for those who do not subscribe to this idea is childish. It is a way of keeping people frightened and controllable and it has worked for many hundreds of years. Mayans, Hebrews, Muslims, Hindu all pre date Christianity. None of them are THE way. Practice what you will, it is between you and your concept of the source of the universe is. Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Tupac, Hell and Shangi-la.....all in the mind.

i think this song is about an affair. because they are tempted to go to the hotel, and then you can check out, which means go back home, but you can never leave, which means forget what you've done. it tells a tale of temptation and deception, and basically outlines an affair of sorts. Whenever people have an affair, they can never wash away the stench of adultery...

It makes sense that it would be about drugs..but

Actually, I read an article in Rolling Stone a while back-- on this song. It said that the song was about going insane, which wen you read the lyrics makes a lot of sense. Hotel California is the mental institution that the person is being taken to- and "we are all just prisoners here, of our own device" refers to people being prisoners of their own minds, unable to be cured or escape. The voices in the middle of the night, the line where it says "her mind is tiffany-twisted.." all refer to being insane.

Oh, and a correction in the lyrics; in the third paragraph, it should read,
"she's got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, she calls MEN."

This song has many astonishing similarities to Jean-Paul Sartre's "No Exit". Nearly every line of this song has a direct parallel with the character's experiences in Hell, although I do not recognize any references to Inez.

I do believe that there are minor drug references but overall it revolves around "No Exit".

this song is about drugs,

'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'
smoking could be hell or heaven

"Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way"-
that aint a candle
she showed him how to get high
I thought I heard them say...

"Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California"-

he thought he was high
not many people do it so there is plenty of drugs to use

"Some dance to remember, some dance to forget"-
some do it to remember some do it to forget

"He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here
Since nineteen sixty nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say... "

you wake up in the middle of the nite to smoke because of the addiction.

each time don sings the chorus, thet is a medifor for being High.

''We are all just prisoners here, of our own device"

we live with our own choices

"The stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast"

cant fight the addiction

"Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before

he was trying to run from the addiction but he cant find a way out.

"relax said the night man"

just smoke and forget

"You can checkout any time you like,
but you can never leave! "

you can say your drug free but you know you have smoked and the addiction is still clawing at you

The bottom line is that Don tryed drugs but he didn't like them so he tryed to quit and for the most part he did but he will never forgrt what they did to him

/ [{DON'T DO DRUGS!}]\

No cults, no mental institutions, no record industry metaphor. It is primarily a tome to the call of the west. In the sixties and seventies there was an enormous influx of people to California. There were many things to be found and to do. Among them were sex, drugs and partying with flamboyant outgoing types.

"Her mind is Tiffany Twisted, she got the Mercedes Bends" A couple of swell plays on words here.
Tiffany Twisted is a reference to Tiffany Glass which with there was an enormous obsession at the time, so to with the Mercedes. Later The BMW was the darling of the pre Yuppie rich. Lincoln Town Car has done time on that pedestal as well. Escalade too.
Also not that "The Bends" is a malady suffered by folks who go under water and try to come up too quickly. The use of the term "Mercedes Bends" is a reference to
folks who have an obsession or a "deficiency" in there lives that is fortified by owning a Mercedes.

Pretty pretty boys refers to Californias substantial "gay" population "that she call friends" refers to their influence and acceptance in local and state politics.

"Anytime of year you can find it here." is a tip of the hat to the fact that California has sking, Mountain climbing, surfing and desert hiking available 365 days a year as well as a diverse populace that will gladly indulge your bent whether it is porn, drugs or greek food.

"Haven't had that spirit here since 1969" a lament that not since the sixties has a certain purity of spirit existed there. The taint of the influx has leveed jealousy, envy and rampant avarice among the populace.

"In the masters chamber they gathered for the feast. They stabbed it with their steely knives but they just can't like the beast."
Many parties in California, especially those among a certain progressive "do your own thing" lifestylers included a small sub party in a secret room (often the master bed room) where cocaine was laid out on mirrors and chopped to fine powder with a razor.(steely knife) Have you ever been to a party and suddenly noticed that the right five people are all missing at the same time? Check the masters chambers.

"Next thing I rememer I was running for the door. I had to find the passage back to the place I was before."
*The protagonist has come to realize he has been adversely affected by this strange and decadent lifestyle. His guilt and shame have him wanting out. He longs for a simpler less complicated time.

"Relax said the night man we are programmed to receive. You can checkout any time you like but you can never leave."

*Here is where the "Idea" of California takes hold. No longer a geographical locale, the great state has become a state of mind as well. You can leave (check out) but as Wolfe said....."You cannot go home again"
We cannot unlearn what we have learned. Our eager eyes long for more input, our senses seek drama and greater sensual delights.....until....we become sated and feel the embarrassing truth. We are who we are and we make foolish mistakes in life. We can make a mental note to leave a certain type of activity alone..such as (wife swapping, cocaine abuse, thievery, self indulgence on many levels) BUT...we can Never undo the doing of it. If you were at that party you will remember for life what you did.

if you have ever tried quitin something it is almost perfect fit.

"you can check out any time you like but you can never leave" sure you can quit, get over the physical addiction but u will always want it.

ok, look, this song is lk one of the best there is, but wat i cant get my head around is how the hell u ppl thought that this was about drugs, nowhere close, it in plain eglish, its about him dieing nd going 2 hell, look @ the begening,

"up ahead in the distance i saw a shimmering light"
the dude was driving nd saw sum headlights down the road
"My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night"
he got in a wreck, his eyes shout nd it was over,

nd look he even comes out nd says
"And I was thinking to myself,
This could be Heaven or this could be Hell"
^^^ hello i mean, come on^^^
o nd about the lady lighten up the candle, angel, showing him where he belongs, ok i no, so then wats ^ with the partying, well 4 those who dont no, satin's a desiver, he likes 2 lie, so he want the dude 2 belive he's in heaven, look at this line

"She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends" ***cough*** cheeter go 2 hell!
the evidince is even here

"Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year, you can find it here"
hell has no limit, nd anytime u die, u can still go
nd getting 2 my fav part of the song win the girl says

"'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device"
if ur n hell, ur there 4 a reason nd now my fav, win satin comes n the picture

"And in the master's chambers"
satin's chamber

"They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast"
gd following drum solo, anyway they try 2 kill him, but they cant, nd now after he sees satin, he halls ass 2 the door, but then some other curesed soul tells him...

"Relax, said the night man,
We are programmed to receive.
You can checkout any time you like,
but you can never leave!"
that suxs dude, but u cant escape once ur there, is this clear enuff 4 yall??

Certainly about drugs IMHO.

Hotel/California -Heroine and Cocaine.

Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
-you use a spoon and a candle for injecting heroine

They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast- Cutting up lines of coke with a razor blade.

You can checkout any time you like,
but you can never leave!
-you can overdose and die anytime but you can't stop taking them

Great guitar solo BTW and the song works as a poem too.

I read somewhere that is was about fame. Being stuck in fame and wanting out.

"Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year, you can find it here"
-there's plenty of room in California for famous people, and you can find fame anytime in California.

"Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes-Benz'
-(and i guess he saying that fame is a girl) tiffany jewlery costs a lot and many famous people like it. Merceds-Benz is car famouse people love.

"She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends"
-(She-as in fame) has a lot of very attractive boys that you think she would have as a boyfried but they are nothing more to her then just friends.

"How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget"
-some dance to remember what life was like before fame, with no tabloids, and some dance to forget what they had before fame its sometimes easier to ferget then to remember.

So I called up the Captain,
'Please bring me my wine'
He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here
Since nineteen sixty nine'"
-If i remember right its about Woodstock. And at woodstock they drank wine (?) and it was very popular and after woodstock it wasnt and the guy wanted wine, but wine left when woostock left in 1969- i think....

"They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis"
-having fun parting and just livin it up. Its nice surprise, fame, the money, parites, friends, bring your alibis as in make sure you have some alibis for the tabloids.

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice"
-Having these things is a sign that you have a lot of money.

"And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device"
-I think i means that if your a good actor/singer being famous is like a prison you can never get out of it fully it will always follow you and its sorta your own fault.

"And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast"
-they are trying to kill the beast-as in fame (?) but they just cant kill it and cant kill all the beast's that come along with fame.

"Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before"
-He's trying to return to the life before fame, he see's just how fame works and how you can change so much and become a diffrent person.

"'Relax,' said the night man,
We are programmed to receive.
You can checkout any time you like,
but you can never leave!"
-Means that you can leave California and try to stop being famous but you really cant, you'll always have people comming up to you, following you and stuff like that. fame will never leave a person.

I dont know where i read all this info on the song but i remember most of it and to me it make sense.

So am i the only person who feels this song is specifically about a whorehouse? I mean really sit and listen to it. "I was thinking to myself, this could be heaven or this could be hell", moving on, "How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget" , "They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast...",

"They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis "

I mean come on, mirrors on the ceiling, champagne on ice. These lyrics scream about sex to me. But, i am a perverted bastard so what can i say

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet because there are over 13 pages and i don't plan on reading them all.
But the line "They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast" is making a reference towards Steely Dan. Both bands share the same manager and had a little friendly rivalry.

I think this song is about man's eternal struggle and strife trying to fight and distance themselves from sin. I'm not a big religious nut but reading the lyrics definitely made me think of that.
