Lyrics for Hotel California as interpreted by Demau Senae

Hotel California Lyrics
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell'
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year, you can find it here

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes-Benz
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the Captain,
'Please bring me my wine'
He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here
Since nineteen sixty nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device
And in the master's chambers,
They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
'Relax,' said the night man,
We are programmed to receive.
You can checkout any time you like,
but you can never leave!

In my huble opinion, the wine refers to the wine of the Eucharist, i.e. Jesus's blood. Hence the use of the word "spirit" when the captain says "sorry dude, we're all out," or words to that effect.

i saw an interview with the band. they said this song was actualy writen about a time when their tour bus broke down in california. it was in the evening and they walked to the nearest building out in the middle of no where, which happened to be an insain aslyum. they called a tow truck which agreed to get the bus and have it serviced in the morning, so the staff offered them rooms for the night and as a joke refered to the place as hotel california. they stayed for dinner, and even socialized with the pateints. when the evening shift was relieved by the night shift the staff failed to mention to the oncoming shift that they were visitors and not pateints. thus they were told that they cant leave by the night shift and held overnight. i actaualy worked in a behavioral health facility for a year and a half and i can tell you that quite a bit of the lyrics relate to what you experiance in them. for instance to help with pateint saftey we do checks down the halls peakin into the rooms every 15 minutes to make sure that the pateints havent harmed themselves. to a light sleeper this is tough to get used to and relates well to the lyric 'wake you up in the middle of the night just to hear them say' the part where they 'stab it with their stealy knifes but cant kill the beast' relates to code grays where a pateint looses control and needs to be sedated by injection the needle being the 'stealy knife' even the part about mirrors on the cealing relate to security mirrors. the pink champagine even relates to pink lemonaide which is served in many cafiterias. so as you can see it explains all the lyrics and it was truely from the horses mouth.

im not sure really but my mom and i talked it over and we agreed that the last line

"relaxe said the night man we are PROGRAMMED TO RECIEVE you can check out any time you like but you can never leave"

basicly since at the time science fiction was all the rage all the people are robots and they are completly automated to make money as a hotel and the person you made them only able to recieve people and serve but forgot to teach them to let people out so you can check out any time you like but we dont know how to check you out

Whoever wrote this song obviously wrote it with some meaning behind it. Its full of metaphorical statements. But I believe that anyone can listen to this song and interpret its meaning in their own way(i.e. drug addiction, a cult, the 60's/70's music scene)

The real Hotel California is not a place; it is a metaphor for the west coast music industry and it's effect on the talented but unworldly musicians who find themselves ensnarled in it's glittering web. Check out snopes.
