All these accidents that happen
Follow the dot
Coincidence makes sense
Only with you
You don't have to speak
I feel
Emotional landscapes
They puzzle me

Then the riddle gets solved and you push me up to this :
State of emergency
How beautiful to be
State of emergency
Is where I want to be

All that no-one sees
You see
What's inside of me
Every nerve that hurts you hea
Deep inside of me
You don't have to speak
I feel
Emotional landscapes
They puzzle me
Confuse

Then the riddle gets solved and you push me up to this :
State of emergency
How beautiful to be
State of emergency
Is where I want to be
State of emergency
How beautiful to be

Emotional landscapes
They puzzle me

Then the riddle gets solved and you push me up to this :
State of emergency
How beautiful to be
State of emergency
Is where I want to be
State of emergency
How beautiful to be
State of emergency...

My Interpretation:This song, to me, depicts what's happening around me perfectly which may be one of the reasons why I love this song so much, besides that fact that's an incredible song. When Bjork sings "all these accidents that happen", she's describing a sadness, conflict or a mistake that is getting her down. "Follow the dot" is the path she has taken in her life which leads her to this 'accident'. "Coincidences make sense, only to you" describe the closeness and deep understanding she has with this friend of hers. "You don't have to speak, I feel" meaning that these to friends are so close they don't even have to describe how they're feeling for their friend to know and to understand. To feel empathetic with a complete understanding of this "accident". "Emotional landscapes, they puzzle me" describe the emotional depth that is hidden in the 'landscape' of all the people involved in the accident. "Then the puzzle gets solved" shows a resolution to the issue. "You push me to this state of emergency" shows the emotional pinnacle, a strong love and a deep gratitude she feels from close friend. She then sings about "How beautiful it is to be in this state of emergency" which shows the true beauty of humanity, human emotion and this special and amazing connection she has with her friend. "All that no-one sees you see, what's inside of me" show how her friend can so easily read her emotions. How her friend can see when she is deeply upset even if she tries to hide it. "Every nerve that hurts you heal, deep inside of me" shows this friend of hers can so easily understand and comfort her, healing all her emotional pain. Then it repeats the chorus which I've already explained.
In basic, I believe this song was written when she was feeling a deep gratitude to someone. Someone who she wanted to thank. That one person who she was so deeply dependent on, the best friend she loved more than anyone who she was so emotionally attached and dependent on.
I hope this helped. It's definitely what it means to me and I'm sure it's a song that people can connect to so deeply and brings that one person to mind who you connect with so easily whether it be your mother, partner or how I see it as best friend.

General Comment:WOW guys you've ginve me a whole new set of things to think about with your opinions!
here's what I always: that it was beautiful, raw depiction of what love or being in love truly is. all the things she said describe, at least, what I've felt to be love.

General Comment:I believe this song has to do with the exhilirating insights that you can reach when you discuss life with intimate friends. These incidents that happen seem unrelated, but when you relate them to a close friend, he can see that all these "accidents" are actually tied together by you, perhaps a pattern of behavior you unconsciously carry out because of an unrecognized characteristic or childhood event. When your friend speaks this golden nugget of truth, instantly all the pieces begin to fall together; everything begins to make sense. It's one of those unforgettable moments in life that brings a physical and emotional high, a beautiful "state of emergency". In using the word "emergency", she may have not been referring to its denotation. I feel she may have been referring to its root word, "emerge", or to rise up, to appear, basically, to move vertically. Interpreted this way, she may be saying that this interaction with her intimate causes her to "emerge" from her current state, now having a much better angle to look at her current situation. From higher ground, one can more easily make out exactly where someone is; when you're smack dab in the middle of it, you don't have a clue.

General Comment:I can't fucking believe I had never heard this song before. I feel so ashamed, since I call myself a music lover.
Anyway, just by the verse "coincidence makes sense only with you, you don't have to speak, I feel" I can tell that it's about a friend. I mean, that's what I think.
When I was 4, I moved to a new apartment and I met my best friend, who lived in the same building. We were the same age and we used to play together all day long. We went to the same school, sat side by side in class, walked home together everyday. When we were about 12, my mother and his mother were talking and we found out we went to the same daycare (or whatever you call a school for babies) when we were one year old. We both had freckels and blondish hair, and the same laugh (because we were together all the time, the sound of our laughs became alike). We used to make these beads bracelets, and the lady from the store where we used to buy the beads thought we were twins. He taught me how to swim and I taught him maths. I also punched him in the nose once, and it bled. Later that day we were best friends again.
I'm sorry for this little story. I'm just so shocked with myself for never hearing this song before, and at the same time I'm happy for listening to it now. I'm in a state of emergency, I'm gonna listen to it all night long.
Oh, and the video is incredible, too. Björk is fantastic, what a talent.

General Comment:This song is very emotional. There is this very powerful attraction. Soulmates destined to be together? Maybe some inner conflict about being sexually attracted to another of the same sex? Learning to trust your feelings, and let go of inhibitions. Beautiful song.

General Comment:Ok, well a few years ago I posted that I really didn't get it. But I think I've known it all along. It's pretty simple if you think about it.

Bad things happen in life for a reason. (all these accidents)
Everything falls into place because of the bad things in life. (follow the dot, coincidence makes sense)
She tries to figure out why some things are horrible, and some things are beautiful (accidents/emotional landscapes)

Something bad lead to something good. (The riddle gets solved/you push me up to..)
Life is an emergency because bad things always happen. (State of emergency)
Life is beautiful. (How beautiful to be/state of emergency)
She wants to live because life is beautiful and it makes sense to go through tragedies. (Is where I want to be)

General Comment:I've only recently considered a more spiritual aspect to this song.
For years I've seen the obvious link with nature/Iceland - one can immediately tell that the island depicted is Iceland (geographic outline). Clearly the drama of Iceland's nature is shown visually, but also the beats go along with the volcanic/earthquakes etc...

The first lyrics always left me puzzled, until I noticed that she says follow the DOT, and not dots, as we'd expect. I think she is pointing out that we can follow all events back to one common creator source, and that coincidence is a cop out explanation for all the beauty/events/accidents around us. Surely there is a source to all this (makes sense, only with You - you is God, or in Pagan Bjork speak : God as Nature.

You don't have to speak, I feel, emotional landscapes. this refers to God's emotions spelled out in landscapes and natural events.

all that no one sees...heal deep inside of me: how being at one with Nature/God fixes all. resets her. and finally helps her remember how she is so at the mercy of the Nature's power/God's power: state of emergency. we are all so dependent on being safe from Nature's power. all can be destroyed or taken away in a breath - we are in a state of emergency every moment of our lives, and yet have so much to be grateful for - hence how beautiful to be - beautiful to be at all, to be alive in such a precarious balance of life and death.

General Comment:It sounds as though it is about two people (friends or significant others) that feed off one another. The writer feels like even when all these "accidents" are happening around her, it somehow makes sense that she with that person.

She's obviously confused, because the other person constantly is putting her on edge, but in a way it feels like it's right. The "how beautiful to be" part shows that.
