True, true.."Nativity In Black" is NOT what NIB stands for. The previous posts about Bill Ward are correct, I'll try to fill in some specifics.. Bill Ward had a beard that came to a point, and, Ozzy being drunk, started calling Bill "Nibber" because the beard looked like the end of a pen nib. The name gravatated back to Nib and, having this untitled song, they decided to use the nickname as the name of the song, and, as Ozzy puts it, to make the title sound more menacing, they put periods in between the letters.

This song, according to Geezer whom wrote the lyrics, is about the Devil falling in love. Geezer did this because he couldn't write a love song himself, and decided to make Satan the man who falls in love with the woman.

Read the biography. The song was after Bill Ward's 'pen nib' beard. They were most likely stoned at the time they named it, so of course, you can't expect a lot of their titles to make any sense, besides, titles often times don't.

And to go with what LastConservativeFan said, Sabbath wasn't a Satanic band, they just had an occult theme...like an image. Geezer was interested in the occult {fact from a biography}, and thats how some of their darker themes came into play, but they were in fact Christians.

However, N.I.B. is the best track for new listeners. Don't believe when people say this is dark or distorted or symphonic or whatever. This is NOT. The early Sabbath albums are as accessible as they get. Unless you are a princess living in your palace made of sugar, who never saw the dirt in the world, you will like Sabbath's classics, for sure.

It's a love song with real catchy melodies and easily understood lyrics. I wouldn't be surprised if someone put this and "The Reason"(Hoobastank) in the same "greatest love songs" list. The first line says it all, and is the best line to start a love letter to your crush with.

Sabbath songs had a solid dirt feel to them -- they were far from as metallic as newer bands such as Iced Earth and Megadeth. Sabbath is called metal, but actually feels more like soil and rocks, not iron and steel.

Yo, it's pretty obvious. It's Lucifer singing to you, the listener, congratulating you on selling your soul........I'm an agnostic and I can tell that. What's all this crap about the devil falling in love? None of yall understand the devil's character. Granted he's a fictional character, but he's not weak enough to fall in love with anyone other than himself, hence the whole getting kicked out of heaven story. I think its almost kind of a funny song if you think about it. I believe its about the "devil" falling in love, which to me, is a little bit funny.

Actually it is on Black sabbath's first album entitled Black Sabbath and then ozzy and primus redid it.

I don't think It's about the Devil in Love exactly. i think it's about the way he attracts people and how similar it is to a seducing lover. Nativity in Black as in being reborn in darkness, like an evil baptism kinda thing. Maybe it's just me.
