This is one of my favorite songs of all time by one of the best bands ever. Its such an amazing song that makes me happy whenever I hear it. I think its about a guy who is very much in love with a woman. She makes him happy and he feels very calm and comfortable around her.

This song breaks my heart...I remember lying in bed listening to it with my ex love, and now when I hear it or sing it in my head, I feel crushed thinking about the feelings it brought up inside me at one time when I was with him. Otherwise a great, great song.

This song wasn't written by the Eagles - one of their few covers. It was written by some stereotypical C&W musician with a big cowboy hat - can't think of his name.
A great sounding song.

This for me is the best Eagles song ever and they have recorded some classic songs ! I never tire of hearing this, it has everything, great lyrics, melody and guitar solo. The best song of the whole 70's. Period.

This song isn't really romantic, although I wish it would be myself, lol.

If you read the lyrics carefully -- its about a moment without strings attached. It's about not having any expectations or being at risk of getting hurt, yet the night is still magical to him.

i find the lyric, "cause I get a peaceful, easy feeling and I know you won't let me down, cause I'm already standing on the ground" to be very telling, he's already on the ground, you can't be let down, he's already at the bottom, he knows her as a lover and as a friend.

the relationship is over, theres still some of it lingering around in the night, but he's over it, and in the morning, it could be gone

a voice in his other ear is telling him that he may never see her again

its been quite a while since she hurt him, as he knows what a woman can do to your soul.

this song is about a common place in relationships, its the point where you don't really know what to do, where it seems so easy to go back, and "make it work," but in reality, its over, you know it, you may not want to admit it, you may still be attracted to eachother, but its over

and he's almost at peace with that fact

After recent events in my life I've come to understand what this song is about. It's about the natural end to a relationship with no bad feelings, and the final moments of that relationship. The writer cannot be let down any further because the relationship is at it's lowest ebb, and he just wants to enjoy the moments he has left with someone he's very much in love with. He knows in his heart that he can recover from this and move on ("She can't take you any way you don't already know how to go"), and he knows that it could all be over at any moment ("this voice keeps whispering in my other ear, tells me I may never see you again"), but all he wants for the moment is to lay down with her, all alone, and enjoy their time together.

tullyisgay is right - totally agree - those fleeting last moments of a relationship. Hell - not even sex in the desert can save the doomed lovers. LOL. But such a wonderful song - I absolutely love it - my fave Eagles song.

this song to means its about a guy who really likes a gorgeous girl and hopes she calls him back(song written way before the days of email) but if she doesent call him back he feels life goes on their will be other girls in the world

'cause I'm already standing on the ground' means that the person is adjusted enough that loving someone else or rather loosing someone else will not drive them to the depths of depression....

They do not attempt to blame the person they love..'Ah, but she can't take you anyway
You don't already know how to go'. They accept the responsibility for their own feelings and actions, and are at peace with who they are enough to really love someone.

i don't think its about the end of the relationship - I think its about the beginning. he just met her, so he "may never see her again" but he thinks it's more likely that she will end up as "a lover and a friend", and that she won't let him down - hence the "peaceful easy feeling".
"What a woman can do to your soul" doesn't necessarily mean she's going to do treat him badly - I think he means simply the power she can exert over a man that loves her.

anyway, its a beautiful song full of emotion and mental images. The Eagle's best. I recently saw them in concert, and they put on a great show.

Some seem to have the general idea, but they are off a bit.

I might be a new love or one that is getting stronger, but no matter what, it is while things are good and look to be getting better. The whole point of not being let down and already being on the ground, is that he isn't letting himself get high expectations or let himself get too close. Relationships in the past have hurt him so deeply that he doesn't let his guard down. He enjoys her, he thinks there might be a future, but the voice and past history tell him to stay unattached.

It is a love song, yes, but it is more about protecting yourself from rushing in emotionally. You never know when it might turn, and you might not see them again. Those who have been hurt enough by strong relationships failing can make the most sense of these lyrics. You want to get close to someone again, to fall in love... but you don't let yourself so you don't get let down... you stay grounded.
