Lyrics for City Love as interpreted by Ice

City Love Lyrics
I never liked this apple much
it always seemed too big to touch
I can't remember how I found
My way before she came around

I tell everyone
I smile just because
I got a city love
I found it in Lydia
and I can't remember life before her name

she keeps a toothbrush at my place
as if I had the extra space
she steals my clothes to wear to work
I know her hairs are on my shirts

I tell everyone
I smile just because
I got a city love
I found it in Lydia
and I can't remember life before

the day she called up and came to me
covered in rain
dinnertime shadowing
and as the clothes spun
we spooned and I knew I was through
when I said, "I love you"

Friday evening we've been drinking
2 AM I swear I might propose
but we close the tab
split a cab
and call each other up when we get home
falling asleep
to the sound of sirens

I got a city love
I found it in Lydia
from the battery to the gallery
its the kind of thing you only see
in scented glossy magazines
and I can't remember life before her name

One of my favorites on the "Room for Squares" album.

Again, John blows me away...

(I always thought that the line, "falling asleep to the sound of sirens" was "falling asleep to the sound of silence".... wish it were.. sound of silence.. great paradox)

I actually just saw John last night and he desribed this song as "falling in love with the absolute wrong person, but having and absolutely amazing time with it" (or something along those lines)...I thing its a beautiful song and idea

"I smile just because".. Doesn't that lyric just describe how it feels to be in love? This song is great, but aren't all of John's songs fabulous?

i love how its about completely irrational love. everyone's always looking for relationships that are "going somewhere" - sometimes you find love in the places you least expect it. "i cant remember life before her name" i love when you get so lost in love for someone you just cant remember how it was before them. hes amazing.

while the line "fallings asleep to the sound of silence" is an awesome line, i think that "falling asleep to the sound of sirens" is better, because it relates to the song so well being that it supposed to take place in NYC and we always fall asleep to the sound of sirens or other alarms :)

on another note i read these lyrics before i bought Room For Squares and i didn't think i would like the song all that much. but with his voice and the sound, especially how he sings the chorus. and the line "she keeps her toothbrush at my place as if i had the extra space" is great.

I thought it was "falling asleep to the sound of silence" because of the few lines preceding that one. "...and call each other up when we get home falling asleep to the sounds of silence/sirens..." I thought that they would call each other up... and then just fall asleep on the phone. They didnt have to talk.. just knowing that the other was there, on the other line, was enough.

Does that make sense only to me?

"falling asleep to the sound of silence/sirens" is a good paradox. It does make sense that they would call each other up and fall asleep to the silence on the other line but its' a city love so falling asleep to the sounds of the sirens outside is possible too.

i always wondered about the apple being too big to touch. then my friend who heard this song for the 1st time w/ me, 1st time to hear john mayer actually said it probably is refering to New York & how the apple is too big to touch, or new york just felt too big to live in & the way that they said that john mayer talks about this song being about falling in love w/ the wrong person, it fits b/c he doesn't like the city & falling asleep to the sound of sirens ? come on, i doubt that's too pleasant

This song's so perfect! Very, very sweet. The ending couldn't be better ("and I can't remember life before her name..") and I love the orchestra use as well. Is anyone going to be seeing John at the Greek (in Los Angeles) in August? For that matter, is ANYONE going to be seeing John?

I don't understand how everyone is saying that this song is about being with someone you shouldn't be with or what not. Because he is so happy. He says that he "can't remember life before her name"... Why would she be wrong for him? He talks about how perfect it is:
"its the kind of thing you only see in scented glossy magazines"...... He also says that he loves her. So someone needs to give me a more clear explaination on why she is wrong for him.... Please. :) THis is also one of my favs. by John.

i love this song... i was listening to it this weekend with my boyfriend, and we both laughed during the lyrics "she keeps a toothbrush at my place / as if I had the extra space / she steals my clothes to wear to work / I know her hairs are on my shirts" because that's exactly what I do. :) I like that his lyrics are real, and sweet.

I'm surprised no one's asked about the Lydia girl. She's in his liner notes, so I guess she's an old girlfriend or something. Anyway, I love this song, and I thought it was "falling asleep to the sound of silence" up until about a month ago.

I think dinnertime shadowing means dinnertime is right behind them, or coming up, like a shadow lingering behind you.
