Lyrics for No Such Thing as interpreted by Ice

No Such Thing Lyrics
"welcome to the real world"
she said to me condescendingly
"take a seat, take your life
plot it out in black and white"

well I never lived the dreams of the prom kings
and the drama queens
I'd like to think the best of me
is still hiding up my sleeve

they love to tell you "stay inside the lines"
but something's better on the other side

I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

so the good boys and girls take the so-called right track
faded white hats grabbing credits, maybe transfers
they read all the books but they can't find the answers
all of our parents, they're getting older
I wonder if they've wished for anything better
while in their memories, tiny tragedies

they love to tell you "stay inside the lines"
but something's better on the other side

I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

I am invincible
I am invincible
I am invincible
as long as I'm alive

I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

I just can't wait for my ten year reunion
I'm gonna bust down the double doors
and when I stand on these tables before you
you will know what all this time was for

My Song Meaning:
I think this song is about a rabbit who liked digging big tunnels in the dirt. He wated to get exercise because he was so big, but everytime he ran thorugh his "hole" (this represents running through a High school because they are both the place that a being spends their most life changing moments in.), he would never fix because he just kept getting fatter. The line which says "Welcome to the real world" is saying that life is never fair. There is always some problem. You can tell that the rabbit also feels "handicapped" to some degree. When he says that he wants to scream at the top of his lungs, he is saying that he has a disability. The rabbit cannot scream. And when it talks about the guys and girls... it means that humans are starting to unrightfully "kill" rabbits. Here, the rabbits are also being "judged" and feel handicapped. In the very end when he says,"I just can't wait for my ten year reunion" he is refering to the end of his life, since the rabbit species doesn't live very long. He will find out that his life was pointless... he was just a human toy.

(Don't worry. I know this isn't what the song's about.)
(Hehehe)

This is in answer to Carms way up there...

John did drop out of Berkeley.. But you know why? He said that he wanted to make music.. not only study it.

While I do love this song and how it talks of people and society setting limitations for what you want to do. I don't like the idea of him sticking his tounge out at everyone. Kinda saying, Haha look at me now. It makes me think that he was a big dork before.

Ok I can totally relate to what hes saying. At first he says that he was welcomed into the real world and expected to know exactly what he was going to do for the rest of his life. Then he says that he wasnt really popluar or nething but he always thought that he was better in other more important areas of life (versus social) Then he says how people are always showing you how to live your life when you could be living it happier your own way. Then he continues onto wanting to tell other people there isnt more of a real world than this by going back to hs and screaming through the halls then the last thing says that he wants to go back and prove that he has been a succes and that other people will look up instead of down I dunno thats not neccserily what he was thinking when he wrote it cuz i dunno but that smy interpretation of the song..

i just dropped out of school today... not because i was lacking credits or anything like that. i just left because it wasnt the right road for me. and i have a lot family members going against my decision and this song just sums up how i feel perfectly:

"so the good boys and girls take the so-called right track
faded white hats grabbing credits, maybe transfers
they read all the books but they can't find the answers
all of our parents, they're getting older
I wonder if they've wished for anything better
while in their memories, tiny tragedies

they love to tell you 'stay inside the lines'
but something's better on the other side "

This song is amazing. Even my dad likes it. It's different then alot of the stuff getting tons of radio play lately. The debate on this is alot how I think sometimes... and I don't know who to side with.. but the real fans know who they are, and the one's who aren't real fans are just lying to themselves... but anyways music is music. I couldn't live without it:) and I'm glad John Mayer came along with a song that's so different :)
Peace -n- Love

this song was played at my high school prom and i looked around and saw 75% of people singing along. It makes you step back and examine life. Do it for yourself

iluvjm- you're lucky, i tried to get my senior class to use it as our senior theme but noooooo, they're stupid and would rather have some stupid leann rhimes song called "please remember me". its so annoying because every class for the past 3 years has had "remember" in the title of the senior theme. stupid conformists! they didnt even listen to the song to see that is says that they are staying inside the lines, and they are blind to what is better on the other side. im so bitter!!

I am so sad right now. Just thinking of this song makes me tear up. The part "I am invincable" man i can totally relate. That's we all feel. And I can't wait for our 20 year reunion. I was always friends w/ the prom king or prom queen but doesn't that beat all I was never on mtself. The most memorable thing I will even remember from my high school is our triple over time victory at our homecoming game for football freshman year. (I run cross-country and we won our meet.) The second is my senior year. When I was running through the halls of my high school, we or at least all of the seniors were having so much fun. We were all lokking at each other and reflecting all the dates we went on together, all the time we spent together, baseball, soccer, football, basketball, softball games we went 2gether. One of my friends Drew was crying and I started to cry too because man I can. Guys have feelings too. And the look and energy there when we made to senior cove as we call it. Everybody was apoligizing, yelling, screeming, it was too much. Then right before it was over two of my friends and me Started teh last "SENIOR POWER". Thats what I will remember most senior power man, the drama, my friends. In 20 years I'd better know what it was all for because I made the rash decision to join the ARMY. And I hope it was right. Because there is a 3 year relationship on the lines here. Good luck to class of 2003 I luv you with all my heart. I feel the same way. But it's finally over, rise above guys and gals I really want to c-ya in 20 years!!!!!!

i love this song. i think its kinda about how when u get 2 high school people r tellin u how hard it is n how it not like elementary, its"the real world". i just love that beat n how its so real. i liked the part when he said "i wanna run through the halls of my high school, i wanna scream at the top of my lungs". i have wanted 2 do that 2. it like he's saying that u can do that now. u came in your first year n everyone told u how hard it was gonna be, but made it through, and u've earned the right to run through those halls when for 4 years u were told not 2. its kinda like a freedom song. especially the part when he says "i am invisible". i just fall into that part of the song. this song is wonderful and so is john mayer. its very expressive, and it has feeling 2 it. it rocks. :)

I think this song is also about high school or life after high school. When actually, things are just the same.

OH my goodness, I'm 32 and totally get this song. When I was in high school, all your advisors keep trying to prepare you for the "real world." Have you heard this in high school or from your parents/guardians in some form or another? "If you don't get into a good school, if you don't go to college, you're not gonna be able to get a job, and you'll be poor your entire life." That is a load of crap. Real life is nothing like the way our "educators" and "guidance councilors" make it out to be.

I don't think Jammer's calling for non-conformity, I think he's trying to tell you to "be yourself." And that, no matter what happens, you're gonna be okay.

first time i heard, i was in grade 12.
my parents used to urge me to decide my plan after high school, they wanted me to continue to this petrolleum/oil school. i did not have any idea nor plan whatsoever, so we paid visit several times to the campus, and i actually sat for the scholarship exam, but i never had my heart on that (i didnt get it anyway). so i spent the next 6 months working, clerk job, and i did not even bother thinking about going to college, i worked as if i was going to be at that work place forever.
one day, a friend of mine urged me to start considering college seriously, because he said i should and i could. 8 months after my graduation i started a new phase in my life. i moved to malaysia and this is my fourth year here.
so i went to to college anyway, i 'stayed inside the line'. i guess what i needed back in grade 12 was a little bit of time and space to find 'somethings better on the other side'. and see everything clearly. what our parents, schools perceived as 'real world' is not the same thing with the one i perceive. the person who knows best how to make myself happy is myself.

This song puts me in a good mood but more importantly there is a intro to this song its called "every little thing she does" basically about his mom here it is

Freshman year mama asked waht do you wanna
do when you get out of here.
i said well gee, i'm only 13, but i think i'd like to play my guitar
be a star
gee well thats not it you got some time to go
good sense will kick in any time you know.
i'm not worried, i'm not worried

Sophmore year she asked the same old thing,
my answer had remained unchanged
i saw her fidgit with her thumbs,
she said you like computers John, you like computers don't you
you see i always see with a computer you like computers
maybee you could do something with computers yea wouldn't that be nice

Junior year, its a little more tense she says,
what do you want to do with your life?
i'm not on the fence i know exactly what i am to be
and i'm only 17.

she well all i ask is that you pay attention in class,
so if you happen to xhange your mind in time you can still go
so where reputible, do us proud.
so i went down stairs and played the guitar loud.

yea and senior its the same old question
she said what you wanna do?
i said play my guitar and sing, she said theres no such thing,
she said thers no such thing

Now this is the part where "welcome to the real world"

Ha. I'm twenty now and i'd hate to count the number of times i've been told 'Welcome to the real world' in the last few years. Everytime someone says it to me, i just want to punch them, it makes me so mad because its SO CONDESCENDING!!! GO JOHN MAYER FOR POINTING THIS OUT!
