Lyrics for No Such Thing as interpreted by Ice

No Such Thing Lyrics
"welcome to the real world"
she said to me condescendingly
"take a seat, take your life
plot it out in black and white"

well I never lived the dreams of the prom kings
and the drama queens
I'd like to think the best of me
is still hiding up my sleeve

they love to tell you "stay inside the lines"
but something's better on the other side

I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

so the good boys and girls take the so-called right track
faded white hats grabbing credits, maybe transfers
they read all the books but they can't find the answers
all of our parents, they're getting older
I wonder if they've wished for anything better
while in their memories, tiny tragedies

they love to tell you "stay inside the lines"
but something's better on the other side

I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

I am invincible
I am invincible
I am invincible
as long as I'm alive

I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

I just can't wait for my ten year reunion
I'm gonna bust down the double doors
and when I stand on these tables before you
you will know what all this time was for

this is a great song. john mayer is a commendable musician. he's a berkeley graduate! how often do you see those guys getting so successful? i'd like to see britney spears or nsync graduate from berkeley

i love this song. the sound of it is just so refreshing and calming and then the words come in and perfect it, just telling you be your own person and stuff. ahh...i love his voice, it's kinda scratchy. the "real"/acoustic (i don't know, i don't listen to the radio and i'm going by the video) is so much better than the video version. why did they have to remix it? it really bothers me, i don't like the song half as much. it sounds too unnaturally fast. it's meant to be a mellow song. john mayer is AWESOME, this song is my favorite besides "comfortable" and i'm generally a punk and emo fan. i love john though, and jack johnson and DMB. i understand how people can think john sounds similar to dave matthews but he does have his own sound (which i think is better than dave's!)

anyway i love this song, it kicks ass.

Brilliant... Didn't John Mayer drop out of Berkely? I don't know if that's true, but it's what I heard. Anyway, the different genres of music he incorporates into his makes it a really unique sound, and the lyrics speak the truth for a lot of people and it's a feel-good song. There's no such thing as the real world, so we can all lighten up and live the way we want to. Brilliant!!!

the lyrics of this song are incredible...remind me a WHOLE lot of round here by counting crows- a song where people, including adam, are looked down upon because they are not normal- but what is normal and why be like others? screw them- peace and love to all

I agree with all of you. To me, he is trying to say that you should be free to do whatever you want without having to be put down for it. Have more self-confidence. Don't listen to all the lies that people tell you in order for you to do what THEY want. Do what please YOU and only YOU. Don't be scared to be different.

everyone seems to be talking about how this song is only for the nonconformists.... but really its for everyone because honestly who doesnt feel this way sometimes?? i think this song is more for the unnoticed people of the world, not the people who try to be unnoticed

As for music being on the radio...music is meant to be shared. If the people who have heard it before the radio, they find special meaning with a song and artist, why wouldn't you want to spread that to other people? I think it's selfish. Don't you want other people to discover John, maybe his music will make other people happy as you. It's selfish to say the whole radio thing.
I like this song, thats all I have to say.

I like this song a lot because it talks about life (not something you hear so much anymore) and that it brings you back to school. It doesn't diss school but it reminds you of the good things of it, like friends, and special moments. Very touching if you play it in a graduation. :)

And about that whole mainstream thing, I agree with ya'. I was a huge Dido fan before she was on MTV and stuff. I bought her CD when her song was on the Roswell show. I never even knew she was on that Eminem song... But when I heard she was on the radio and she started catching fame, I got pissed off because all these "fake" fans started popping out of no where. But then, I became one of those "fake" fans. It's hard for some people to find underground music. Pretty sad that we can't.

I absolutely love that line "I am invicible as long as I'm alive". It's so funny and true, and exactly what I WANT to feel most of the time, even if I don't.

I dunno y but I'm the mood to fight with the "it shouldn't be on the radio" statement. Yes I understand that it's not the same and I hate radio cuts too, but in many cases (especially in my case) I can't download MP3s, and am too poor to go roaming around the country for music I like. If it hadn't been for VH1 I never would have heard about it. I was flipping through channels and went straight out to get the cd because it sounds like DMB in some ways and I LOVE them. This is the kind of music I'm constantly trying to find along with other sounds but since I have no other way, radio surfing is sometimes my only way.

I just wanted to say that the first time I heard this song I cried my eyes out. I am 28 years old, married and mother of 2. I recently returned to college after dropping out seven years ago when I became pregnant with my first child. I am the parent looking back on "tiny tragedies" and the still young enough to wish for more. Just when I thought I was beaten along came this song. I have LIVED this song. I just recently had my ten year reunion. I realized that most of those people who "stayed inside the lines" are not the ones who are happy with their lives and wished that I had allowed myself to color outside those lines. So for all you who have just graduated or are even still in high school, do what your heart tells you to do. You don't have to go along with the norm. Bust out! And it's never too late to change things. I have and I'm a happier person for it.

John attended the Berkeley School of Music in Boston. Not the University of California in Berkeley. He's not that smart. Besides, he dropped out after a year of school and moved to Atlanta. His song "Why Georgia" is partially about this decision and the difficulty he experienced in making this drastic choice.

I love this song. "I want to run through the halls of my high school. I want to scream at the top of my lungs." I go to a private school in the 2nd richest county in the U.S. and some the people really get on your nerves. They only care about money. It's ridiculous. It's a contest to see who can drive the most expensive cars and buy the most expensive clothes. I want to yell at them because they just don't realize that money isn't everything. They live in their only little fantasy world. But i love this song because its seems like anyone can relate to it.
