Lyrics for No Such Thing as interpreted by Ice

No Such Thing Lyrics
"welcome to the real world"
she said to me condescendingly
"take a seat, take your life
plot it out in black and white"

well I never lived the dreams of the prom kings
and the drama queens
I'd like to think the best of me
is still hiding up my sleeve

they love to tell you "stay inside the lines"
but something's better on the other side

I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

so the good boys and girls take the so-called right track
faded white hats grabbing credits, maybe transfers
they read all the books but they can't find the answers
all of our parents, they're getting older
I wonder if they've wished for anything better
while in their memories, tiny tragedies

they love to tell you "stay inside the lines"
but something's better on the other side

I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

I am invincible
I am invincible
I am invincible
as long as I'm alive

I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

I just can't wait for my ten year reunion
I'm gonna bust down the double doors
and when I stand on these tables before you
you will know what all this time was for

non-conformists unite!! i saw that in the window of a dorm room my freshman yr of college and think the irony is so funny yet so true!! there is NO SUCH THING AS THE REAL WORLD!! its just a LIE you've gotta RISE ABOVE~~~ the real world is the way it is b/c people have made it so. but it doesnt have to be. you choose the life you want to live and you surround yourself with people who believe more or less in the things that you do and that creates your world. your REAL world. with REAL people. gosh i love john...!!

johns music is something that everyone should not only listen to, but they should hear it...dont "stay inside the lines" but rather think outside of them, really listen to the words, just read the lyrics to everyone of his songs, they realte to every person in one way or another and they can provide you with advice you can give to yourself...its a shame that some people cant really appreciate john on a different level...i just shake my head at those who say "he's hot" or hear the song on the radio sandwiched between nsync and ja rule, that is a travesty...please hear the music, and appreciate his talent, and buy the record, dont just download or burn it because you are providing him with zero support that way

This song seems to me that a person is trying to find a career to go into around graduation time... they don't want to conform what their parents and/or friends want to... it's powerful, and really good to boot.

It's like this guys is trying to find his life. I really enjoyed hearing this song for the first time and I'm glad that I did. I hope that everyone else likes it because it is really deep and I can understand where John is comming from when he says "they love to tell you 'stay inside the lines'" I just love it. I have a lot of respect for John because he tells it how it is.

my fave part of this song is "so the good boys and girls take the so-called right track, faded white hats grabbing credits, maybe transfers, they read all the books but they can't find the answers."
that makes me think of the people who stay on the so-called "right," or "normal" "track" of life, but they're not learing anything, not having fun, they're just donig what they're expected to do. especially the line "they read all the books but they can't find the answers," that's so true.

he's such a lyrical genius!

i don't think anyone's really touched on this point yet, so i'll leave my 2 cents here: there is no such thing as the real world... they say "once you leave high school... once you leave college..." you'll go out in "the real world". well, this world is no more real than the one you have been living in and are presently living in. the only thing that changes as you grow older, is your awareness and your perspective. but don't expect everything to change just because you graduate... and for those of you still in high school: have fun and don't worry TOO much about grades and such, 'cause it really doesn't matter. i'll step down now.

Amen to emmychloe!! While I know this song is about not worrying what people say or think, it think its also about not worrying about what catagory you fit into, "confomist," "rebel", etc. Its about finding what makes you happy and not worrying about the little things. "they read all the books but they can't find the answers" Do what you feel gives you the answers, and don't be afraid to live life the way you want to live it., and no other way.

Those of you saying things like "i hope the preps don't start singing this song" - YOU ARE MISSING THE WHOLE POINT! the idea is to not waste beautiful works of art like this on people like yourselves that catagorize things. you're so worried about being non-conformists that you don't realize that you're too worried about what your fellow "underground" people think of you. John Mayer is one of the greatest musicians I've ever heard and his music should be played all over the radio and TV so that everyone can learn from his genius. Ok, sorry i dragged on and on. i'm out.

This is a wonderful song. John is certainly a genius in music. All of his songs have a meaning that is deep. You have to look into the song and analyze it to totally understand it. His style reminds me some what of Dave Matthews, but only when it comes to lyrics. They both allow the listener to interpret the song in their own way. It's real music. I'm so glad to see John enter the music business. I'm so happy to go to the CD store and see a CD with real, good quality music. I'm sick of the Britney Spears' and NSYNC's of the world. It's so refreshing to hear John on the radio!!!!!

I ecspecially love the normal non-remixed version of this song more. It makes me mad that to get this song played on the radio they had to remix it.

This is an absolutely beautiful song. I mean, wow. I don't know what to say. I'm completely awestruck. I've been addicted to this song since I first heard it, and I think that John Mayer is an absolutely amazing musician.

Oh, yeah...And I was reading something somewhere, and one of John's idols is Dave Matthews, which might explain the similarities.

I heard this song on my why home the night before graduation. All that day I had been thinking about how much had changed about myslef since I was a freshman. How far I had come and how happy and scared I was to finally be at that point overwhelmed me that week. As i listend to John's lyrics that night, I could not help but think of all the memories and how I finally figured out that there IS something better on the other side....

I, as everyone else here, love this song so much. My favorite lyric in this song is "I'd like to think the best of me/Is still hidin' up my sleeve." John's lyrics are so awesome! I can't wait until I see him live in a month.

I wanted to address what some other people were saying a while ago. Someone was talking about how they hate it when underground artists go mainstream and listen to music just because it's popular. I don't even understand how people can do that because I can't stand to listen to music I don't enjoy. That's why I don't. I don't care how popular the music is, if I don't enjoy the music, there's no way that I'm going to waste my time listening to it. But that's just my opinion. Peace.

Wow, I love this song. The first time I heard it I thought it was by the Dave Matthews Band, since John's voice sounds incredibly like Dave's. When I found out it was by someone different, I took a closer listen, and now I can definitely see some differences. Musically John's style is different from the DMB's, and his lyrics are less abstract.

I love what this song is saying. I agree with the person who said that there's no "real world" beyond that we've been living in all our lives. People tell you that you have to grow up and face the real world and do what everyone's supposed to do when you grow up: have a respectable job, responsibilities, etc. But if that's all you do because it's what you've been told you're supposed to, you might miss out on something better. There's no formula for happiness, or even success, and so John doesn't see the point in being like everyone else and following the "right track". I like the lines "All of our parents getting older / I wonder if they wished for anything better". Those sort of sum of the song for me... live your life so that you won't have so many regrets looking back.

I'm kinda torn on the underground-bands-going-mainstream thing. Like I can TOTALLY see the point some of you are making, as the same thing has happened to some of my favorite bands. I can see where you're coming from, but have you ever thought that mainstream exposure could gain an artist more fans that aren't just bandwagoners? I personally wouldn't have heard of John Mayer if it weren't for the exposure he got for this song, and I genuinely like his music and want to hear more of it. The problem with the underground scene is that a lot of bands go unheard because there's no way of finding out about/hearing them.

when i first heard this song, i immediately took a strong liking to it. i love to sing and write music for fun, and his lyrics brought up something so simple, but so well put, i wish i would've written them. but i truly appreciate this song, especially after having just graduated, because for those of you who have, it is a very emotional time. The lives we knew were suddenly abolished, and everything we've ever been told about the real world really doesn't matter. i heard this song at the perfect time in my life, when so many people were trying to tell me what to do, and what you need to do to succeed... it's not about conforming to and idea of life and following it, it is about being creative in finding what you want to do, "you've got to rise above." as for "i want to run through the halls of my high school," those lyrics in particular make me think of my last day of school, ever (senior year) and how one of the vice principles, the harshest ones, made me sit in in school suspension my last day of school, all day. i had never been in that room before, let alone all day. i didn't get warning, i was called down during first period that day. i sat in there all morning crying, and realized that it didn't matter, and this wasn't making me realize what i did wrong.... it was pointless, and for that, i would like to run through the halls of my high school....
sorry to ramble on... but i had to let all this out...
love to all;)

Why do people try to over analyze everything so much? Just listen to the music and enjoy it for what its worth. If it doesnt mean anything to you, than thats your own fault and not the artists!
