Lyrics for No Such Thing as interpreted by Ice

No Such Thing Lyrics
"welcome to the real world"
she said to me condescendingly
"take a seat, take your life
plot it out in black and white"

well I never lived the dreams of the prom kings
and the drama queens
I'd like to think the best of me
is still hiding up my sleeve

they love to tell you "stay inside the lines"
but something's better on the other side

I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

so the good boys and girls take the so-called right track
faded white hats grabbing credits, maybe transfers
they read all the books but they can't find the answers
all of our parents, they're getting older
I wonder if they've wished for anything better
while in their memories, tiny tragedies

they love to tell you "stay inside the lines"
but something's better on the other side

I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

I am invincible
I am invincible
I am invincible
as long as I'm alive

I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
just a lie you've got to rise above

I just can't wait for my ten year reunion
I'm gonna bust down the double doors
and when I stand on these tables before you
you will know what all this time was for

I heard this song on the radio last night while driving home from work.. I completely identify when he says, "they love to tell you "stay inside the lines"
but something's better on the other side"... Don't you hate it when you're restricted from doing what you want? To me, that includes all of society-- Society tells you that you must do this, or that.. and yet you can't help but.
::sigh:: I wish I were a TRUE non-conformist!

How can you not love this song! I get so sick sometimes of songs on the radio being so depressing, but this song is def. one that makes you think about how little some things in life really are. Everything I had ever been told in high school and by my parents is exactly what the song is talking about...
"they love to tell you 'stay inside the lines' but something's better on the other side"
I don't think that there's anything worng with taking the straight path though...what's straight for you is totally wrong for someone else, you just need to remeber to do what makes you happy no matter how much people dissaprove of you.

You're right, there's nothing wrong with taking the straight path if it makes you happy. But it's when you're not happy is the problem.

"How can you not love this song!".. were you referring to me?.. clarification: This song is awesome.. Sorry if it seemed like I meant otherwise.

This is such a great song, im praying to god it doesn't get played out on the radio, john Mayer deserves more than this. Its such a great song about the non-conformists of the world. Basically my take on this song is as long as your alive you can do whatever you want to do, who cares about whatever anybody else thinks is the right way... if you want something your way do it.

This song has definitely turned into my own personal theme song. It's so motivating...when I'm feeling lazy or depressed about something...I listen to this song and feel 100% better.

i don't like it either when my fav. underground bands go mainstream, it makes the preps (no offense) and lil people that do what the radio tells them to think they are better cause they can sing along to one of my long time favorite songs. I feel the people that know jon;s music now are his real fans... and when he goes mainstream there are going to be alot of "comformist" fans! I WISH I COULD RUN THROUGHT THE HALLS OF MY HIGH SCHOOL!

So what if the "preps" or "lil people that do what the radio tells them to do" hear his music? It sounds like YOU are the one trying to be a "conformist". You think that it's not "cool" if people other than you are singing a certain song, or listening to a certain artist. If you just sit around and only expose a certain small group of people to your music, what's the point? The whole idea associated with making music and signing a record deal is having lots of different people hear it. Music is a great way to bring people together...it's all about unity. I'm sure John feels the same way.

LiveUrLife..."as long as your alive you can do whatever you want to do, who cares about whatever anybody else thinks is the right way... if you want something your way do it."...you're arguing my point..and you don't even realize it...

I'm gonna quote from one of my favorite Ben Harper songs here..."my choice is what I choose to do and if I'm causing no harm it shouldn't bother you..." Leave people alone.

BeautifulDisaster, I agree with you on your first point. The point of music, in my opinion is for people to hear it. As an artist, I think they have the responisiblity and privilege to share their creations with the world.
Carnie, what other people think about Mayer shouldnt impact your opinion.

I could almost (just almost) agree with Carnie211. This has been an on-going debate I've heard lately. When a group/guitarist (example: john) is kept on a low profile...the people who truely appreciate his music feels a special connection or bond with the artist and his songs. But when that artist blows up (becomes famous/gets max radioplay), it becomes hard to identify who a real fan is from the people who listen just to go with the crowd. BUT, it is just as selfish to want John to stay indy and not go mainstream. I'm sure that John wants his music heard by all people no matter if they don't truely appreciate it, he writes the song to TRY and reach them. So to sum it all up POSERS ruin it all!!!

Jackie1228 I can see your point about the DMB similarity, here's a description quote on his webpage Bio: "His creative songwriting and warm stage presence establish him as a formidable musical force, and the smoky swagger of his voice at once evokes Sting, Dave Matthews and Jakob Dylan." I also am a beginning guitarist...and his tabs are hella hard to play...different from any other guitarist I've seen. Then again there is this quote: Mayer says. "I wanted to be listenable and play tunes that other people could play but not the way I play them."

BeautifulDisaster, great quote you posted by Ben Harper!!! It is quite weird though that the quote isn't even closely related to the subject we are talking about hehe...(Burn One Down). But anyway...can't leave without commenting how this song is max-awesome!!!

malico...that quote has a lot to do with what i was talking about. Yes..I know in the song he is talking about marijuana...but those lines taken out of the song and used just as a quote it can mean so many different things. People were picking on other people...so I felt that it fit. And it does. All I'm trying to say by using that quote is don't worry about other people...let them do what they want.

And...I might not agree with what you are saying....but mad props to you for arguing your point and not completely slamming people while doing so.

"Burn One Down" quote...Beautiful Disaster...I meant in no way to try and imply that your posting of that quote was improper or misfit for the subject we are talking about...I can definitely see your meaning and intent and how it relates very much to what you are trying to say...I was just trying to point out that the quote is a long way from it's original meaning.

I just noticed, after re-reading my original post, that I really didn't chose a side on the debate...which makes me seem like I'm just trying to get along with everybody. Well after thinking about it some more I would have to say that it's better for artists to get max recognition...it's most likely what they strive for...who am I to wish for them to stop? (Besides I can always argue that I listened to that artist before he got big to all the people that just listen to him for mainstream appeal). Well of course, all of this is only an opinion...and my purpose isn't to conform anyone to my independent ideas.

John grew up in my hometown of Fairfield, Connecticut and moved away when he was 18. He attended Fairfield High and as all of us know who live in Fairfield, theres a lot of drugs that fly around the corridors. I'm best friends with Johns little brother Ben who is my age and we're in highschool now. John came home the other night and i found this site and i wanted to show him what some people have said about his songs. He agrees with all of you that he wants people to hear his music as much as possible, but he wishes not to be a "sellout" and be played on MTV and that bullcrap. His songs probably will not be played out becaues he wishes to be like a Phish, Guster, Sublime kind of musician where his music is heard very seldom on the radio, but his tours are unbelievable. To note on the person who said something about how he sounds like Dave Matthews..... Dave aint a 1/4 of he guitarist John is.....

High school, as most of us know, is a very hard time for lots of people. I would happen to be one of those people. I'm not a prep, yet I'm not all independent. I just kinda float around. There are times where i just feel like doin everything the song says. "I wanna run through the halls of my high school. I wanna scream at the top of my lungs." I can just really relate to this song. I love it.

And if John ever sees this again, PLEASE come to the Rio Grande Valley. Let me assure you, you have many fans down here in Texas.

"i wanna run through the ahlls of my high school, i wanna scream at the top of my lungs..." it's been a long time since music this good was written by an artist played on main-stream radio. (last was Bob Dylan) and while it is for non-conformists (i myself HAVE run screaming through the halls of my high school), those poor little radio listeners should hear it too. Whatever spreads the greatness.
oh, and you really should try that running and screaming thing...it's really awesome. kind of a natural high!
