Hit it!
This ain't no disco
And it ain't no country club either,
This is L.A.

All I want to do is have a little fun before I die
Says the man next to me out of nowhere
It's apropos of nothing he says his name is William
But I'm sure he's Bill or Billy or Mac or buddy

And he's plain ugly to me, and I wonder if he's ever
Had a day of fun in his whole life

We are drinking beer at noon on Tuesday
In the bar that faces the giant car wash
And the good people of the world
Are washing their cars on their lunch breaks
Hosing and scrubbing as best they can
In skirts and suits

And they drive their shiny Datsuns and Buicks
Back to the phone company, the record stores, too
Well, they're nothing like Billy and me

'Cause

[Chorus]
All I wanna do is have some fun
I got a feeling I'm not the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun
I got a feeling I'm not the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun
Until the sun comes up over
Santa Monica Boulevard

I like a good beer buzz, early in the morning
Billy likes to peal the labels from his bottles of bud
He shreds them on the bar then he lights up every match
In an over-sized pack letting each one burn
Down to his thick fingers before blowing and
Cursing them out, he's watching
The bottles of bud as they spin on the floor

And a happy couple enters the bar
Dangerously, close to one another
The bartender looks up from his want ads

But,

[Chorus]

Otherwise the bar is ours, the day and the night
And the car wash, too, the matches and the
Buds, and the clean and dirty cars,
The sun and the moon ,

But, all I wanna do is have some fun
I got a feeling I'm not the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun
I got a feeling I'm not the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun
I got a feeling the party has just begun
All I wanna do is have some fun
I won't tell you that you're the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun
Until the sun comes up over
Santa Monica Boulevard
Until the sun comes up over
Santa Monica Boulevard

My Opinion:This sounds like a cheerful pop song, but listen to what the lyrics are saying:

"All I want to do is have a little fun before I die" -- don't miss the "before I die" here, time is running out, and the guy who says this looks like maybe he's never had a day of fun in his life. And what's Billy or Mac or whatever going to do about it? Sit in a bar with Sheryl Crow and drink "at noon on a Tuesday" and burn matches and tear up the labels from the bottles, while the world goes by outside.

By the way, you can read the full text of the original poem here: poetryandstout.blogspot.com/2005/07/…

General Comment:I still love this song. I hear this and I remember I know this situation. Sometimes you have to let your hair down and this is what she is telling you to do. It also sounds like she is hanging with someone with whom she is surprised she is having a good time.

General Comment:I like how anachronistic the song is. Datsun, Buick, phone company, record store, matches, and want ads-- all gone. It doesn't surprise me that it's originally poetry, because it is potently descriptive.

General Comment:This song often takes me back to highschool spring break, being at the beach and partying at this beach house with alot of people from all around, one of those parties the people where standing up on the furniture. I know because I was one of them ;) But as I'v grown up from then and even played alot of music at places like she describes she's at, I realize that while Sheryl was definatly wanting to make us dance with her grooves and melody's, she was talking about life from the lethargic perspective of one who doesn't punch the clock or work a 9 to 5. She probably did write it during or about that time when people like her would slug thru their days waiting for the next gig at any other hole-in-the-wall joint. I'v played those places and can only imagine what it would have been like for a beauty like Sheryl Crow. The people in those places seem to be a different breed than the rest, even as you resolve yourself to the fact that you are one of them on this day. She sings like a peson that only is there because that's the faustian trade fro paying dues in the music biz, low-lifes in seedy watering holes. Playing for nothing sometimes, or maybe free PBR on draft as your payment. Monetary payments of any kind are far few in between. So you succomb, at leaste for the moment to your surroundings, with Billy at the bar and all the other bar rats. And chalk it all up to freedom of time over the corporate way things are constricted in this material world. And since it's this way and alot of us buy the ticket knowing this, we sit in limbo, coasting until take off. And in that, all we want is some fun times in this life before we too get serious or whatever it is that becomes of everyone.

General Comment:Actually, Sheryl Crow had very little to do with writing the music to this song. While that is true about the lyrics, the music was written by Kevin Gilbert of Toy Matinee, the band that he and Crow were in together prior to her solo release.

General Comment:The lyrics for the song are closely based on the poem "Fun" by Wyn Cooper . Crow had written the music for the song but was unhappy with the accompanying lyrics. Her producer bought her ten random books of poetry and Crow adapted "Fun" to accompany the music. Cooper is listed as a co-writer and receives royalties from the song.

General Comment:this song reminds me of my mom ... i dont know why i remember this but we heard it on the radio and she laughed and said "your dad used to wash a Datsun once a week for a man at a carwash, he didnt wanna get his nice clothes dirty."
after she died my dad and i heard the song one night and he laughed and told me she used to hang around bars and play with bottles and matches if they were around...
this song means happier and simpler times to me. so wrapped up in life now .. and all i wanna do is have some fun...
