Chorus
This is the story of a girl
Who cried a river and drowned the whole world
And while she looks so sad in photographs
I absolutely love her
When she smiles

How many days in a year?
She woke up with hope but she only found tears
And I can be so insincere
Making the promises never for real
As long as she stands there waiting
Wearin' the holes in the soles of her shoes
How many days disappear?
You look in the mirror, so how do you choose?

Your clothes never wear as well the next day
And your hair never falls in quite the same way
You never seem to run out of things to say

Chorus

How many lovers would stay?
Just to put up with this sh** day after day
How did we wind up this way?
Watchin' our mouths for the words that we say
As long as we stand here waitin'
Wearin' the clothes of the souls that we choose
How do we get there today?
When we're walkin' too far for the price of our shoes

Your clothes never wear as well the next day
And your hair never falls in quite the same way
You never seem to run out of things to say

Chorus

And your clothes never wear as well the next day
And your hair never falls in quite the same way
You never seem to run out of things to say

This is the story of a girl
Who cried a river and drowned the whole world
And while she looks so sad in photographs
I absolutely love her

This is the story of a girl
Whose pretty face she hid from the world
And while she looks so sad and lonely there
I absolutely love her

Chorus

When she smiles

General Comment:Reminds me of me and a boy that has a crush on me. I'm usually depressed but he loves me anyway. But, I only like him as a friend.

Sorry it can't work out between us, Ryan!
    Best Wishes!

My Interpretation:I think this song is about a guy who is dating a girl that's really depressed.
He's talking about how he loves her so much ("I absolutely love her when she smiles").
He keeps telling her that eventually she'll feel better, but it never really happens ("how many days in they year have you woke up with hope but you only found tears? I can be so insincere, making you promises, never for real"). She has low self-esteem and basically waits around making excuses for why that is. She has regrets about before that she's always wishing she could change ("As long as she stands there waiting. Wearin' the holes in the soles of her shoes. How many days disappear? You look in the mirror, so how do you choose? Your clothes never wear as well the next day and your hair never falls in quite the same way"). She never runs out of excuses for why her life sucks ("but you never seem to run out of things to say").

He loves her regardless of her faults though, and tells her that most guys wouldn't stay after all the things she's said and done. ("How many lovers would stay? Just to put up with this sh** day after day. How did we wind up this way? Watchin' our mouths for the words that we say. As long as we stand here waitin' wearin' the clothes of the souls that we choose. How do we get there today? When we're walkin' too far for the price of our shoes").

    Sweet song. Love it!

General Comment:it's about either a couple were the girl is depressed, or he likes a depressed girl.

it's not going so well for her. but he's going to stick with her regardless!

I've had more than one person tell me this song reminded them of me. including my boyfriend.

General Comment:No one here has posted a decent meaning for this song. I will submit the following:

This song is about a guy who can't commit to a relationship and a girl who is still standing by him and waiting patiently. Although most of the lyrics are either about her or directed to her, I think the following are actually the singer speaking about himself:

Your clothes never wear as well the next day
And your hair never falls in quite the same way
You never seem to run out of things to say

And finally, I think this song represents him coming to some self-realization and turning point regarding his non-committal approach.

Song Meaning:Based on what oofus said and my own incite, I think this song is about a couple who's going through a some rough spots. They've probably been together for a while and have gotten very comfortable with each other. They're starting to annoy each other and get in petty fights. Instead of getting closer, they're pulling away from each other and starting to watch what they say around each other to prevent further quarrels. Each day's a pain and they wonder why they put up with it.

Based on the refrain, I think that the guy is very irritated at the way his girl friends handles things. He thinks she's emotional enough for everyone in the world, let alone just one girl. And it pissed him off. But then they're are those good times, the ones where she's smiling that huge smile that's big enough to light whole world, and he realizes that its all worth it.
