Go downtown to catch the early movie.
The shows are cheaper there
And they don't mind if you put your feet up.
She's out on the highway.
She's got a homemade sign it says.
Go ahead try to figure what my future looks like.

I don't want to live my life like a story.
Always thinkin' I could've been something.
Don't run along side and control me.
Just film away and let me be.

At ease I, I feel fine.
I'll move on, I'll go on.

There's something so divided.
Don't worry about me I'll be fine.
Don't live your life for me or for anyone.
You live your life as if you're one.
You live your life as if you're one.
Quiet, it's awful quiet.

How can you be mad?
We've just got started.
I want to shave my head and lie in bed all day long.

How can you be mad?
We've just got started.
You live your as if you're one.
You live your as if you're one.

At ease I, I feel fine.
I'll move on, I'll go on.

Don't live your life like a movie.
Always thinkin' you could've been something.
Don't live your life for me or for anyone.
You live your life as if you're one.
You live your life as if you're one.
Quiet, it's awful quiet. so quiet.

General Comment:This is the time where the two of them really didn't get along. Sara and Tegan were just out of high school and they had just months before decided to not go to university and be in a band together. Then Sara got into a relationship and was distracted from being in the band and everything else in her life. She had told her mom later that she would be be in the band with Tegan for a little while because Tegan didn't have much going on for her(as told by tegan's point of view). And their mother stuck them into therapy in which they were soon after removed from therapy for harassing the therapist. Somewhere in this time period Tegan wrote this song for Sara.

During the live shows she sings "The shows are cheaper they don't mind when I put my feet up / Sara's out on the highway" and it ends with the fist verse. The last line they sing in the live version is "Go ahead and tell me what my future looks like"

General Comment:I think this song is definately about independance and individuality.
Shes basically saying "you can look but dont touch. watch me to see if im ok but dont interfere"
I love how simple this song is to play on guitar and sing , but it still seems to be a really interesting song too.
I also like how simple but meaningful the lyrics are , and the way she talks about the movies reminds me of a gorgeously oldfashioned tiny cinema near where i live.
This song is also about the future and how people have plans for the future but might not be able to carry them out.

General Comment:Sara told Tegan that she didn't want to be in their band anymore, but their mom convinced Sara to stay and then Tegan wrote this song. When they perform it live, she does say "Sara sat on the highway."

General Comment:Whiteiron had it right. Tegan wrote it when her and Sara weren't getting along at all, back when they were younger.

General Comment:I swear Tegan says "Sara's out on the highway, she's got a homemade sign". Well she does when singing live :)

i love this part because it makes her sound so humble.

uh anyways i think it is them talking about a girl, or teenager, trying to find their way in life and not living up to their dreams. i think that they are speaking directly to a parent who has not let them be free and is hesitating on acting as if they are a child.
