tegan and sara are both vegetarians. i'm assuming that's what their reffering to in this song when they say 'cleverly planned meals'.

As far as I know, neither of them are currently vegetarians. You do not have to be to promote the well being of animals: I eat meat, and I protest against fur and animal cruelty, etc.

I don't think the "clever meals" is meant to be literal, anyways....

I think clever meals is just sort of a metaphore.. and they aren't vegetarian, although they are anti-fur.. they always talk about bbqing in the province area and all that.

i always heard one part a little differently, i thought it was "and as you sit up there all sly and sure, i wonder: does anyone think as strongly as you do?" i totally could be wrong, and i guess it doesn't change the meaning much anyway. it's a beautiful, beautiful song... "as I stand here SCREAMING in despair..." perfect lyrics, I madly love all of Tegan's songs from Under Feet Like Ours. and i regularly love all of Sara's, of course.

It has always seemed to me that this song is about Tegan and Sara's relationship with their audience, and in particular, describes Tegans feelings while onstage. Questioning whether anything she says is understood or valued, or if there is even someone out there who could understand and value what she has to say. At the same time, she defends and adds power to her words and music, saying that it IS important, because it's her story. It carries such a power with it, in my opinion, because of the chorus where she (I assume) ecourages Sara to join her in escaping the doubt and poilitics of power and just be free, empowered and in flight. Absolutely beautiful in its simplicity.

this song is often listened to by people with eating disorders, although I'm not saying that's what it's about.
"They aren't desperate for love and affection
They're desperate for you"
that's often used as a calling out to Ana, and how they aren't starving for people to notice them, they're starving for "her".


"Will you shut your mouth you won't come across so dense "
this line just sounds like someone ignorant is trying to voice an opinion on something they know nothing about, which can be used in many cases.

this isn't my interpretation, it's just the first time I heard this song it was because an anorexic friend said that that's what she heard in the song and wanted me to listen.
