Lyrics for Sonnet as interpreted by kevin

Sonnet Lyrics
My friend and me
Looking through her red box of memories
Faded I'm sure
But love seems to stick in her veins you know

Yes, there's love if you want it
Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord
Yes, there's love if you want it
Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord
My lord

Why can't you see
That nature has its way of warning me
Eyes open wide
Looking at the heavens with a tear in my eye

Yes, there's love if you want it
Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord
Yes, there's love if you want it
Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord
My lord

Sinking faster than a boat without a hull
My lord
Dreaming about the day when I can see you there
My side
By my side

Here we go again and my head is gone, my lord
I stop to say hello
'Cause I think you should know, by now
By now
By now
By now
By now
By now
Oh, by now
Oh, by now
Oh, by now
Oh, by now

it sounds like he's in love with his friend, but she's still hung up on someone else.

It is about a relationship with an ex. He calls her a freind because they have decided to be Friends. Seeing each other just rubs salt in wounds that will not heal, but alas they have decided to be "freinds" even if it kills them both. In the end he hopes that they will one day get back together because they truly love each other.

another example of richard ashcroft - a genuis, and this is one of his more simple examples of lyric writing.

i agree, it's pretty much about a relationship with an ex. not sure why you'd ever do that, but okay.

Possibly about his heroin addiction?

'love seems to stick in her veins you know'

Addicted to the drug,

'Here we go again and my head is gone, my lord
I stop to say hello
'Cause I think you should know, by now'

Hes taken a hit again. Just a guess

'Yes, there's love if you want it
Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord'

There's heroin if he wants it, the lord almighty is telling him in his head why he shouldn't have it,

wow barely any comments on this song/ this artist..... this is like the verve's best, didnt like the album that much though. It's weird to see that the verve's fanbase is so small

What a nice touching song, I like it more now that I know what it might be about...songs about that kind of hurting but never-ending relationship have always fascinated me but I wasn't sure this song was about it too :'(

Nah. I think this more like a relationship, and not merely drugs, if that's how you want to interpret it. It is a very good song though.
I think Eggos=yum, got the meaning perfect though. At least what I hope the meaning is, because it's so cute.

I think this is about a relationship with an ex, or even a on-again/off-again relationship.

"Yes, there's love if you want it
Don't sound like no sonnet, my lord"

A sonnet is a terribly ordered piece of poetry (remember back to english class: ababcdcdefefgg), so there is love for this couple, though it might not be a one step forward, two steps back type of process. When we were dating, my wife and I had such a relationship and that's how I thought of this song at the time.

Like much of Urban Hymns there is also considerable drug imagery.

well, I listened to this song many times when I was really heartbroken when someone I cared for didn`t want me.....

To me it was all about hope and being positive and being happy with myself even if things are hurting right now.

Either way its a terrific heartfelt song :-)

okay this is exactly the same with me
right the start is showing how close the two people are,
then the chorus shows they like each other but there is someting getting in the way of something happening, maybe the friendship is so strong
then the end shows that they both know they like each other, but it wont ever work

like i said this is my situation, and this song is just beautiful

this song is gorgeous. and sounds like a sonnet would be if i had to guess what one would sound like to music, which kinda makes the "don't sound like no sonnet" a bit ironic.

sounds to me more like this song is about someone that he loved but is now dead.
"My friend and me
Looking through her red box of memories"
He still thinks that shes with him but hes looking through all her old stuff
"Eyes open wide
Looking at the heavens with a tear in my eye"
He looks up and believes that she is up there in heaven and he feels sad to be parted from her
"Dreaming about the day when I can see you there"
Dreaming about the day he can see her in heaven
And he also keeps saying my lord.. as if he is talking to god...
well thats what i thought when i read it.. who knows whether thats what its really about

Thought there would be more comments about this song?

To me its a combination of his heroin addiction and how he uses it to escape pain and past loves...

"my friend and me (him and the heroin)
Looking through her red box of memories...

Like Benjo says, love sticking iin her veins is the heroin he uses to replace what he has lost...

He makes reference to 'my lord' a lot indicating he is lost and looks for help, not only with her, but with the struggle to control himself and his addiction..

I love this song and whether or not the above is correct its a lovely song to relate to unrequited love, but when you never fully give up hope!

Some beautiful interpretations there guys.

Despite being a huge Verve fan, I thought it was a simple love song, but you've all made me think again.

This website shows there's almost no such thing as a 'simple love song' ANother!

I believe the comment about the partner having passed away is plausible - but other sections suggest she's still alive - for instance the part about looking through her book of memories.

What does this section mean?

"Why can't you see
That nature has its way of warning me"

Its a deep song - i think no one on here has fully cracked this one... myself included...

Sounds like looking back at the end of a relationship. 'My friend and I'- Thats no throwaway, line, he's bitter that they're just friends
'Yeah, there's love if you want it'- He's offering her a second chance, i think everybody can relate to this song at some stage. Really is amazing, Ashcroft is a living legend.

I always thought the sonnet thing was a reference to love not being perfect, the way it seems in poetry. There's love if you want it, but you have to accept its imperfections.
Then the last(ish!) line "I think you should know by now" is kind of a reference to that, she should realise she can't have everything she wants.
