So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
The story it grows older,
The story is no story here
I never knew what it is,
And there's no sign of it ending
As I am it and ought to be,
They're telling me I am
[Chorus]
Bowling race car driver,
Superficial hitman you're
On the list at every door,
You don't bowl or race fast cars
Composition competition you drive
Just because I don't go,
To the church where you reside
I might as well go for it,
The nineties won't be back again
Until I'm forty-eight years old
I can be the hungry,
As I eat my words again,
Appealing yet apalling
Rising to my falling,
I'm going to extreme ends,
I'm gagging on their scene
[Chorus]
You shift, I'm the driver,
Over time in it's defense,
I move their car
And for a moment it makes sense,
But I fail them in the end
In the arms of old age,
Knowing only one to lose
Feeling nothing more to hide,
Consider life a forgery
As you're gagging on your scene,
Admit to fraudulence
Driven to this thought,
Death is certain, faith is not
[Chorus]
Composition competition
You drive competition
Competition
I'm losing I fail it in the end
The story is no story here
I never knew what it is,
And there's no sign of it ending
As I am it and ought to be,
They're telling me I am
[Chorus]
Bowling race car driver,

I'm losing I fail it in the end
