Lyrics for Bittersweet Symphony as interpreted by kevin

Bittersweet Symphony Lyrics
Cause it's a bitter sweet symphony this life...
Try to make ends meet , you're a slave to the money then you die.
I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down...
You know the one that takes you to the places where all the things meet, yeah.

No change, I can change, I can change, I can change,
but I'm here in my mould , I am here in my mould.
But I'm a million different people from one day to the next...
I can't change my mould , no,no,no,no,no,no,no

Well I've never prayed,
But tonight I'm on my knees, yeah.
I need to hear some sounds that recognise the pain in me, yeah.
I let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind , I feel free now.
But the airwaves are clean and there's nobody singing to me now.

No change, I can change, I can change, I can change,
but I'm here in my mould , I am here in my mould.
And I'm a million different people from one day to the next
I can't change my mould, no,no,no,no,no,no,no

Have you ever been down?
I can change, I can change...

Cause it's a bittersweet symphony this life.
Trying to make ends meet, try to find somebody then you die.
You know I can change, I can change, I can change,
but I'm here in my mould, I am here in my mould.
And I'm a million different people from one day to the next.
I can't change my mould, no,no,no,no,no,no,no

We've got ya sex and violence melody and silence
(Have you ever been down)
(I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down)

...oh, and by the way, this is one of those songs you don't have to hear in years, and when someone brings it up, It just pops in your head, and you remember all the words and melody, blah, blah blah. Again, great song.

I think this song is about drugs. Just read between the lines a little.
" But I'm a million different people from one day to the next" i think this line describes the feeling of beeing high on something.
"Trying to make ends meet, try to find somebody then you die." here its talking about how desperate you get to the drug, that you are trying to get money to get high "somebody" meaning drugs.
Life as a drug adic is a bittersweet thing; being high is sweet but the strugels throug life is bitter and hard.! This is how i see the song ; you?

Keep moving, don't stop for anyone, because the good things in life are at the end of the road, and if anyone stands between you what you deserve, then just push past them, because you have one life to live and this is the only chance you get. Letting petty things keep you from what is rightfully yours will ultimately keep you from ever getting to the end of the road, the finish line, a good life.

Amazing song, for me, 'the' song of the 90's... As mentioned before, its all about taking your own path through life and just getting on with things, not letting anybody stop you and just doing what's needed to make ends meet.. Its a song that I can put on whatever mood im in, or If im confused and dont know which mood im actually in, I put this on and it sounds as good as ever :)... Couldnt resist getting 'slave to the money' tattoo'd on my arm hehe

*****this song was a perfect choice for the ending of Cruel Intentions
If u listen to the words it describes Ryan Philipee's character Sabastian perfectly...throughout the movie he was going through changes for Anette and these changes are part of the lyrics "ill take u down the only road Ive ever been down" Sabastian didnt know how to handle Anette and this line states that he only trreated her the way he knew how to ...GREAT SONG GREAT MOVIE

I TOTALLY agree with LocoJen. This song is all about Sebastian (Ryan Philippe's character). Listen when it says: "And I'm a million different people from one day to the next.
I can't change my mould, no,no,no,no,no,no,no"

And also: "I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down"

This is he character. This guy had so many different personas. Look at how he acted in doctors office at the very beginning of the movie, then how he acted once he left, and picked up the girl. Then look at how he acted once he got around Catherine (Sarah Michelle Geller). Then, look at how he acted around his Aunt and once he met Annette. He was a camelion. And this was the only way he had ever been until he met Annette and fell in love with her. I think this is the perfect song for the ending. The title, Bittersweet Symphony, to represents the fact that he actually fell in love thinking he never could, but as soon as he found love he died. Thats the Bittersweet part. The symphony is meant to be beautiful. His life was beuatiful once he fell in love but he didn't get a chance to enjoy it.

On a different note, don't you just love how that journal of his that Catherine was so desperate to read became her undoing?! Classic. And I just LOVE how Cecile walks up through the crowd and shoves it at her! Oh how I LOVED that!

does anybody recognize how fucking sad this song is?
he's been poor his whole life, he's lonely (nobody singing to me part) and he feels stuck in a rut (cant change my mode)- try to find somebody, try to make ends meet then you die?
This is exactly how Im feeling but alot debt ridden lonely college students probably feel the same- except that he's speaking of the musicianhood type, he makes a living selling music and its hard for him to find what he wants cause its all a struggle. So I dont think this song is about doing whatever the fuck you please, its about being stuck...but its bittersweet cause even if he is doing music for a living that is bittersweet. One more thing, I can totally feel the violins in the song...

This song is about a schizophrenic, one that a lot of us can relate to. he/she procratsinates then opens themselves out to a more existential way of life to deal with their own lack of faith and meloncholy, the person cant break out of the 'mould' that society has casted for them and so they experss it in arguements with their inner-monologue....their schizophrenia, their demons, their angels, their god.
Great song, Great Band, possibly the best band of the 90's, shame those miserable capitilist gits 'the stones' had to sue them ei?.....oh and 'cruel intentions' couldn't have possibly tried to do this song justice, its far to deep for that selfish little film.

So beautiful. Maybe the best song ever written. And the title is so appropriate to the feel of the song. The violin part in particular is so bittersweet.

The narrator is saying that life is very contradicting. "Bitter sweet", though a symphony, which indicates cheerfulness.
He tries to make relationships work, but no luck. He is addicted to money.
There is a hint that he is a schizophrenic, but a possibility that he is on drugs aswell. He knows he can change, but he is in this mould that is preventing him from doing it. Depression a possibility, because he is a different person everyday. he has never prayed but he feels that he has come to such a low point in his life that he has to speak to the only person that knows what pain really is, God.
He then asks a question to the world. Have you ever been down? , knowing that he is not the only one suffering at that moment.
He then changes the lyrics to : "trying to make ends meet, try to find somebody then you die" He was searching for love, he couldn't find, he went into a depression or started using drugs. He is trying to say that there was no use, you die anyway.
"we've got ya sex and violence melody and then silence" - conclusion - LIFE IS ALL ABOUT SEX AND VIOLENCE. SILENCE - DEATH. you live life with its ups and downs, its bitter though sweet, in the end death awaits for you.

I fucking love this song

amazing song. fit awesome into the cruel intentions ending. very real song. kind of hints at how people try to change you but you are who you are and can try to be a different person but you really truly cant change.

i think it is about a schizo now that i think about it (im diagnosed half so i relate a bit) but i think he adds some twist to it. i don't know see how if someone gets diagnosed schizo that their are going to continue using illegal drugs and be promiscuis. my abuse led me to the diagnosis and i know of someone else who had a similar experience but we are probably too damn shut in now by our inner turmoil to have access to it plus i wouldnt even want to do drugs lest i die, its freakin horrible to use drugs.
btw, when you have a thing like this to deal with and you are aware of it, you do feel like your in a mould that you can't break out of! so you can feel down if you think that way, so i just ignore these feelings. another pt to add, is that even the video makes sense to this interpreation, cause he's walking all fast bumping into people on the street and his eyes looks so torn like he doesn't even care...
come to think of it, its so genius how he can make someone like me relate to this song.

Yes, it is protraying the stages of life all in one and how it's not going to be easy. I, too, did first hear this masterpiece in Cruel Intentions, which is my favorite movie, ever. The violin and cello part is amazing. One day I hope to play this piece of music. I start cello lessons next week =]

Praying to stop feeling the way he is. Usually the sound that recognizes my pain and cleans my mind is Morphine (or Mark Sandman by himself). "There's nobody signing to me now" he feels lonely and like he's the only one suffering.
"I'm a million different people from one day to the next" His mind is so fucked up and changing so often, that he doesn't even recognizes himself anymore.

I'd just like to add to what "the day the music died" has stated. I am actually critical of a comment he has made about the following segment:

"I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down
You know the one that takes you to the places
where all the veins meet, yeah"

His interpretation is rather lacking in any perspicuity and credibility, although his overall interpretation is quite refreshing and admittedly eye-opening.

However, i'm pretty sure i have the correct interpretation of that passage, well at least i know what he's talking of when he says "the places where all the VEINS meet." It is an anatomical reference! HE'S REFERRING TO THE HEART! THE HEART IS THE PLACE WHERE ALL THE VEINS MEET IN THE BODY. This should lead one to countless rather deep interpretations. This particular passage, which i personally think is the most profound piece of the song, is genius.

holy crap.
THIS IS POSSIBLY THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG EVER MADE.
ok ive grown up listening to this song, so basically it reminds me of my whole life. (not just because it is based upon life itself lol)
the start of the song, is so beautiful. with the orchestra. and it gradually builds up. i think it makes the song so nice. and especially how it has such a unique beat, along with his voice, i seriously get entranced by this song. no matter what mood i am in. and when he voices over his voice, its so good. aha.
I LOVEEEEE IT!!

Contrare to what I've seen above, this song makes me smile.

It's a great song about finding your purpose in this crazy world.
i don't think it's depressing at all.
