Lyrics for The Drugs Don't Work as interpreted by kevin

The Drugs Don't Work Lyrics
All this talk of getting old
It's getting me down my love
Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown
This time I'm comin' down

And I hope you're thinking of me
As you lay down on your side
Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

But I know I'm on a losing streak
'Cause I passed down my old street
And if you wanna show, then just let me know
And I'll sing in your ear again

Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

'Cause baby, ooh, if heaven calls, I'm coming, too
Just like you said, you leave my life, I'm better off dead

All this talk of getting old
It's getting me down my love
Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown
This time I'm comin' down

Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

'Cause baby, ooh, if heaven calls, I'm coming, too
Just like you said, you leave my life, I'm better off dead

But if you wanna show, just let me know
And I'll sing in your ear again

Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

Yeah, I know I'll see your face again
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again

I'm never going down, I'm never coming down
No more, no more, no more, no more, no more
I'm never coming down, I'm never going down
No more, no more, no more, no more, no more
(Repeat and Fade Out)

After listening to this song and reading the lyrics I have decided it's a song about somebody's wife or girlfriend or something and they are dying of cancer. The drugs that don't work are the chemo drugs I'm guessing, cause chemo drugs make you worse as in really sick and stuff.
Well that is what I think, I don't know much.

I totally love this song, it's really sad.

What a beautiful song! Ben Harper does quite a lovely cover of this song.. I can help but feel a bit sad when I listen to this song, and knowing he wrote it for his father gives me a whole new perspective.
My favorite line: "If you wanna show, than just let me know and I'll sing in your ear again." Mmm

Really? I heard somewhere that Richard Ashcroft wrote this song about himself getting over his addiction to drugs...

I think this is a song about how changes in our lives can scare us and people turn to drugs. To me this song is written from the eyes of someone who knows someone who is doing drugs. They see its not helping them and they want them to turn away from them.

Thats just my opinion though.

"Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown" just might be the most depressing lyric ever. I did hear that this song was written for Richard Ashcroft's dying father, but if that's the case, why do parts sound so romantic? ("My love," etc.)

This song IS about his dad, whent into hospital for a ruteen operation, chances off death were very low. but they gave him some drugs that he was allergic to which killed him hence "the drugs don't work
They just make you worse"

The verve rule. They were from Wigan like me and give me and my band so much hope you know we CAAAN make it and be great if we want. Like a cat in a bag waiting to drown makes me cry though.

It seems like he loves this person so much that he will follow them everywhere, even in death.

"'if heaven calls, I'm coming, too"
"you leave my life, I'm better off dead"
"I know I'll see your face again" (in heaven?)

Seems suicidal but hopeful at the same time. Great song.

I can accept he wrote it about his dad but I would hav thought he was aware of the other connotations it would have, especially for many fans of the Verve, their music, as a rule being fairly depressing and therefore the sort of thing people who are unhappy and turn to drugs would listen to.

For me, however, it reminds me of a boy's funeral where they played it... don't want to talk bout that so I won't. Therefore, its really sad for me.

Now I have friends who listen to it and we're all realising how true the meaning we get from it is. Whatever drugs people do, their not happy, obviously the next day, or when they come down but when their lives get really bad their not even happy with the drugs. I think for a lot of people this can be a meaning drawn from the song even if its not what it was written about.

you can refer to your dad or someone in your family as "my love", because simply you love him. It's not weird, at least from a foreign perspective (Mexico). I believe he tells him "my love" not as in a gay/coupling way, but as a family loving way. I don't see anything strange in it.
Great song, by the way. Luckily I still have my dad around, but this is the way I think I'm gonna feel when he leaves... like a cat in a bag...

This is one of the best songs ever.

I think it is so funny, how so many people got pissed off about how it supposedly glamourized drug use, based on the name, without actualy listening to it.

The song is about Richard Ashcrofts father. The lyrics are pretty much correct but it's not actually "my love" it is in fact "my lord" It's in the tab book, well worth learning to play the guitar just to play songs like this one. However music is a form of art and you can interprut the lyrics however they relate to you or how you wish to feel about what is sung.

How on earth could this song be glamourising drug use?
Regardless of whether or not it was written for Richard's father, this song just says it like it is. The drugs don't work, they just make you worse.
