You in the dark
You in the pain
You on the run
Living a hell

Living your ghost
Living your end
Never seem to get in the place that I belong
Don't want to lose the time
Lose the time to come

Whatever you say it's alright
Whatever you do it's all good
Whatever you say it's alright
Silence is not the way
We need to talk about it
If heaven is on the way
If heaven is on the way

You in the sea
On a decline
Breaking the waves
Watching the lights go down
Letting the cables sleep

Whatever you say it's alright
Whatever you do it's all good
Whatever you say it's alright
Silence is not the way
We need to talk about it

If heaven is on the way
We'll wrap the world around it
If heaven is on the way
If heaven is on the way

I'm a stranger in this town
I'm a stranger in this town

If heaven is on the way
If heaven is on the way
I'm a stranger in this town
I'm a stranger in this town

Memory:This song always reminds me of driving back home from my boyfriend's house when I was in high school. My family had moved an hour away, and we would drive back and forth to see each other. It eventually failed.

Fast forward a few years and we decide to try again.

I was unhappy with our relationship, "living a hell", and he didn't seem happy either. We "needed to talk about it", our future. I was tired of living in the uncertainty, to the point of ''whatever you say is alright''. I was tired of wasting my time.

The worst part was I remember driving home alone from his house, and feeling "like a stranger" in the town I grew up in. I had no one left there. This song came on and I just cried.

I went home and said, "If you want out, it's alright." and that was the end.

Silence was not the way, and I still hope "heaven is on the way".

Song Meaning:"Letting The Cables Sleep" This song means to me about that their is Hope and not just "Hopelessness" not to give up, not to live in Pain alone, its not the end, We all belong, never to feel silenced, not to feel your lives a dream, or on downhill decline, never to lose your time to come... Remember, Heaven is on The Way and that is what we all need to talk about, That we are not strangers we are all a part of this World... "Heaven is on the way, We all need to talk about it" To never give up on yourself or, Others... "R.I.P. Kieran~Paul~Tierney~1970~2009" Gob ~ Bless ~ Everyone!!!

General Comment:One of the most beautiful songs of the 90's. I think it's right up there with Pearl Jam's "Yellow Ledbetter," and Mother Love Bone's, "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns"...but, I could be wrong.

General Comment:Agreed w/anna118k. That is a good remix.

This reminds me of a girl I know... and myself at the moment. Strange how that how that works. Well, not really. Everybody does it. Music can seriously help you deal w/stuff (emotions, curveballs of life)that would be harder to deal with otherwise.

This song is beautiful though. Pretty deep.

Memory:This song reminds me of so many things, but the thing I hold dearly to my heart, would be of my first real love. If you have seen the Music video, you can reflect on the Wedding ring on Gavin's Finger of course. I had to give up the love of my life because of decisions made in the past with out any real explanation to the person I fell in love with. I feel as if this is what he would say to me if he could find me. I know the feeling of the girl being torn away from any real explanation. I still to this day wish I could tell him how I really felt.

General Comment:This song is about Rossdale's friend who was dying of AIDS and their need to talk about it. "Silence is not the way, we need to talk about it, if Heaven is on the way." it's about talking about their friends illness and them dying. "I'm a stranger in this town" is representitive of how Rossdale doesn't know how to deal with this new situation.

The music video had nothing to do with the song. They just added sex to make it more interesting.

General Comment:I agree with most people here, most meanings are pretty subjective and it's hard to judge what it'll mean to most people. This song definitely refers to death, "if heaven is on the way" but the relationship aspect shows up in the video. At the end, when it turns out the girl is deaf and he has no way to communicate with her, I think there's an implication that even if the dying person/other member of the relationship had tried to communicate, he wouldn't have understood the problem, i.e. they're speaking different languages.

General Comment:I know this song came out a long time ago and it's probably really old but I recently heard this song for the first time and I fell in love with it and in my perspective of this song's meaning is that everyone at one point feels lost, and feel like their in the need to go in their own world for a while that it's just they can't handle the real world and that obstacles we are put to go through, so I guess it's the basic component of life and the experiences we go through, whether it be love, or fighting off a disease.

I'm getting this general idea because they used this song in the show Charmed and they played it when Piper was mourning over a death of somebody.

My Interpretation:I fell in love with this song the moment I heard it on ER. I feel like it never really got the credit and recognition it should.

I'm always surprised when I can't find interviews with songwriters telling us what certain songs are meant to convey. Or perhaps this is purposely left vague in an effort for us to draw our own conclusions, or take away from the song what is appropriate to us as individuals rather than spoon feeding it.

To me, after carefully reading it, the song is about losing somebody very close. Losing them to what exactly isn't clear, but I don't think that matters. You can take this to be losing somebody to disease, depression, drugs, or anything that would cause a silent and remorseful fade away.

Gavin's songwriting ability is only matched by his ability to put the right emotions into the music. You can almost feel the anguish being stretched from his lungs into your ears
