Lyrics for Letting The Cables Sleep as interpreted by spitfirek7

Letting The Cables Sleep Lyrics
You in the dark
You in the pain
You on the run
Living a hell

Living your ghost
Living your end
Never seem to get in the place that I belong
Don't want to lose the time
Lose the time to come

Whatever you say it's alright
Whatever you do it's all good
Whatever you say it's alright
Silence is not the way
We need to talk about it
If heaven is on the way
If heaven is on the way

You in the sea
On a decline
Breaking the waves
Watching the lights go down
Letting the cables sleep

Whatever you say it's alright
Whatever you do it's all good
Whatever you say it's alright
Silence is not the way
We need to talk about it

If heaven is on the way
We'll wrap the world around it
If heaven is on the way
If heaven is on the way

I'm a stranger in this town
I'm a stranger in this town

If heaven is on the way
If heaven is on the way
I'm a stranger in this town
I'm a stranger in this town

i absolutely love this song. It's amazing. Im not 100% sure of what eactly its about, but I think I have a good idea, especially after watching the video. I think its about these two people who are in this "relationship", but all they really do is have sex. Well the guy wants to tell her that he has real feelings for her, but it turns out that she is in some other relationship pr whatever. that is just what i think

Did anyone see the ER a couple of years ago when this song was playing? All the characters were shown contemplating their lives, the things that had happened, what it meant to them, their place in the world. I thought that was a good interpretation of it. Feeling alone and trying to figure out where you fit in the overall scheme of things.

Well, I heard that Gavin Rossdale wrote this song thinking of a friend of his who was going to die of AIDS. I agree more with slh626 because I think this is a retrospective of live and what it means to be walking away from it.

I agree with Ashley. In the video, if you look close enough, Gavin is wearing a ring on his left hand. Personally, I took it as him being married and visiting a girl he used to (and supposedly now doesn't) have feelings for.

Anyway, they end up having sex, and realize they still want to be together, but are too afraid to tell the other. The girl especially, so she just leaves before she says something she will regret.

I think it's a retrospective view of a RELATIONSHIP. But that's just my opinion.

I have no idea if this is right but i think it's about death and that you need to get all the things you need to say before they leave. Like the lines, "Silence is not the way, We need to talk about it, If heaven is on the way." And when we says, "Watching the lights go down, Letting the cables sleep," I think he is referring to when the person is about to die and letting the body rest. And then "I'm a stranger in this town," says that he doesn't know what to do w/o that person.

Im seeing it on the relationship level. 'Silence is not the way' is something you hear a lot of relationship counselors saying. Who knows.

i agree with everyone that says it's about death. it could be about any form of death, from aids to suicide, but by saying, "we need to talk about it, silence is not the way" and "i'm a stranger in this town" i see it as being about someone who is going to lose a friend, and how they don't understand so they need to talk about it, so they can understand better. it's just about fearing the loss of someone you care for, and how they can deal with it. bush rocks, and gavin is sexy!

One of the reasons this song is so great is that it can be taken in so many different ways. The meaning Gavin had in mind when he wrote this was about (as brill said) AIDS. I remember him talking about it on a show, that he had a friend that was infected with AIDS and for a long time he didn't face it or talk to anyone about it, and it took him a long time to finally open up about it.

Its about (get ready for this) the death (drumroll please) of a relationship (ta-da) and how towards the end, you know you have to talk to the other person, but you dont want to, but you need to in order to let the relationship die in peace.

sorry, but you're all wrong... this song is about a friend of Gavin's that was dying of AIDS. none of his friends told him about it because they didn't want to screw up his success. he shows how this affects him by saying, "I'm a stranger in this town." by living a successful life away from his friends, he has isolated himself from the reality that one of his close friends is dying of AIDS. his guilt almost forces him to write this song. if you want more insight to what this song means, drop me a line at: sittinglmfao@aol.com

I don't think there is really a "right" and "wrong" on the way that people look at a song. Songs mean different things to different people.

okay i have a second comment then, if its about his dying of AIDS, then why is the video all about a relationship with this deaf girl? i think maybe it has a universal meaning, kinda like what mehranduh said.

Maybe all of you are right.. It is about AIDS. The video shows a man, who has an extramarital affair..and the girl is afraid to tell the man she has AIDS..so she leaves before he finds out.

Letting the cables sleep could be putting your past behind you and laying bad times to rest.

The first time I listened to this song ... I fell in love with it. The words describe how I feel bout a lot of things.
"Whatever you say it's alright
Whatever you do it's all good
Whatever you say it's alright
Silence is not the way
We need to talk about it
If heaven is on the way"
That part means the most to me in the whole song because the guy I was dating at the time didn't really talk bout things to me and all I wanted to do was talk to him but he didn't want to.

It's most direct meaning, without reading into it and analyzing it too much, is about a relationship of some sort, doesn't matter what, where there are problems and they're just ignoring them rather than talking them through hence "letting the cables sleep". Stopping the lines of communication for fear of what might come of it.
"Whauever you say it's alright
Whatever yoe do it'b all good
Whatever yod say it&s alrigxt
Silence is not the eay
We need to talk about it ..."

iguess the aids thing sound very good. "heaven is on the way" the person is going to die, " we need to talk about it", "silence is not the way", sounds like the partner is just acting as if everything is alright, while the guy with aids can't take it anymore, cos he's going to die....
sad

I haven't seen the video in a long time but...
1) At the end of the video isn't the girl signing to him?
2) Since I'm pretty sure she is, does anyone know what she's saying?

I learned sign language after the video and I can't seem to catch it again to figure out what she's saying. I assume she's 'breaking up with him' or whatever but I'm just curious...

this song is very sentimental to me...not necessarily because of the lyrics, even though i think they are great anyways, but because me my bestest and closest friend would always drive around town with nowhere to go listening to this song pretty much on repeat...even when i got tired of hearing it...i miss that so much....

He's asking her, "What's wrong?" In sign language
I believe in sign language she's saying "I'm going home alone" or something like it.
Beautiful song
I heard it today on the radio and it took me by surprise. I never hear that often anymore.
