Lyrics for Popular Mechanics For Lovers as interpreted by brick

Popular Mechanics For Lovers Lyrics
I know he knocks you off your feet.
You're so bitter, you think he's sweet.
Well, he's wrong for you, I swear.

Did you forget to read the script?
There was never a role for him.
It was always you and me. Just me.

Popular Mechanics for Broken Hearts could help me now.

I know you never felt romance,
and we always lacked suspense.
But I can edit those parts out.

I never made you feel complete.
I'm a fault line beneath your feet.
I would never bring you down, so down.

Popular Mechanics for Broken Hearts could help me now.

Just because he loves you too,
he wouldn't ever take a bullet for you.
Don't believe a word he says.
He wouldn't ever cut his heart out for you.

I heard he wrote you a song, but so what?
Some guy wrote sixty-nine, and one just ain't enough.
And there's no sense even trying.
I know, cause I've been
trying all the time to find the song that would make you mine.
But all I ever find, my love, are clichés that don't rhyme.

Popular Mechanics for Broken Hearts could help me now.

Just because he loves you too,
he wouldn't ever take a bullet for you.
Don't believe a word he says.
He wouldn't ever cut his heart out for you.

This is about a slightly neurotic person who can never have things be spontaneous.

"Did you forget to read the script?
There was never a role for him.
It was always you and me. Just me."

He didn't plan on having another person enter the scene, which is why he doesn't know what to do now.

"Popular Mechanics for Broken Hearts could help me now. "

He wishes there was some sort of manual that could tell him exactly to handle the situation.

"I know you never felt romance,
and we always lacked suspense.
But I can edit those parts out."

This reiterates what I said about his lack of spontaneity, and I think the girlfriend has found another person because she is so bored by her romance with this guy. He is definitely not exciting.

"I heard he wrote you a song, but so what?
Some guy wrote sixty-nine, and one just ain't enough.
And there's no sense even trying.
I know, cause I've been
trying all the time to find the song that would make you mine.
But all I ever find, my love, are clichés that don't rhyme. "

That entire thing is my favorite part.

This always feels to me like the classic \"just friends\" song... some girl\'s got a \"just a friend\" guy that she keeps around, but he really loves her, though she just doesn\'t like him \"that way\" - and once again, there\'s a hunky, cool guy on the horizon for her, and she\'s swept off her feet. The friend maintains, though, that he\'s \"wrong for her\", and there\'s no way that this johnny-come-lately could ever love her as much as he does.

Unfortunately, as often happens in these situations, she isn\'t listening.

(This is just a wonderful song - the tune is fantastic, and the lyrics are just very endearing. I like the narrator; I don\'t think he sounds controlling or boring so much as nerdy and a little desperate.)

I agree with nerdy and a little desperate, lol. I like it too, just cause it's supposed to be sad, but it feels so upbeat.

I love this song, especially, "I heard he wrote you a song, but so what, some guy wrote 69, and one just ain't enough, and there's no sense in even trying, I know cuz I've been trying all the time to find a song that would make you mind, but all I ever find my love are cliches that don't rhyme." I love how it sort of sounds like the drums after a joke at the end--ba dum bum!, like he knows this lyric is kinda goofy, and awesome (and a tad ironic, obviously if you're such a successful musician, you could come up with a good love song if need be)... it always just makes me smile a little

to answer your question, noiseeeshoes, the band Magnetic Fields made a series of CDs which consisted of 69 Love Songs (or so they said, they were just about some of the craziest and stragest love songs ever put to CD).

The song's great, very funny throughout. I always can't help but laugh when he sings "I've tried awful hard to find some songs that would make you mine. But all I ever find my love is cliches that don't rhyme."

Popular mechanics is a famous science and technology magazine. In the 40s-50s, they published sci-fi stories and 'weird science' (flying cars, jet backpacks, etc) articles.

Add this to all said above, plus the many references to scripting, film stunts, and movie editing and we have a story of a nerdy guy bitching about love lost.

And though I cannot say I like the OC, I absolutely LOVE this song!

The narrator is bitter because the girl he loves is running to the arms of a man who will not love her as much as he does, and he feels that it is her and himself that are supposed to be together. He acknowledges that they never displayed the chemistry or spontaneity that is needed to ignite the spark of romance, but wishes they could just forget about those failures and start fresh.

And of course, "some guy" = Stephin Merritt, composer and singer of most of the songs on the epic 69 Love Songs box set.

Brilliant song. I love this band to pieces.
