And I can do the Frug
I can do the Robocop
I can do the Freddie
I cannot do the Smurf

And I can hate your girl
I can tell you that she's real pretty
I can take my clothes off
I cannot fall in love

And I can do the Frug
I can do the Robocop
I can do the Freddie
I cannot do the Smurf

And I can watch TV
I can shuffle off to Buffalo
I can do a backbend
I will not call you back

And I can start a book
I can make some mac and cheese
I can sleep twelve hours
You'll never see my eyes

And I can do the Frug
I can do the Robocop
I can do the Freddie
I cannot do the Smurf

And I can hate your girl
I can tell you that she's real pretty
I can take my clothes off
I cannot fall in love
You'll never see my eyes
I will not call you back
I cannot do the Smurf
I cannot fall in love
I'll never fall in love
I cannot fall in love

General Comment:The Frug, The Freddie, etc. are all fairly easy dances, but the Smurf is complicated. I think by saying "I cannot do the Smurf, I cannot fall in love..." she is saying she can't do a complicated relationship..

General Comment:i also think it's about a girl who really likes this guy but he has a girlfriend. she's trying to tell him that shewould be a better girlfriend to him by listing all these things she can do, ('i can hate your girl, i can tell you she's real pretty, i can take my clothes off/i can write a book, i can make some mac & cheese, etc'). basically telling him she's worth it. then she stops herself by saying she won't let herself fall in love with him because he's taken (i cannot fall in love, i'll never fall in love, i cannot fall in love).

she also tells herself that she'll have to learn to be happy without him and that she can't cry over this guy ( 'i can do the frug/i can do the robocop' = silly dances that make you happy, 'i cannot do the smurf' = being blue or sad). in the end, she has to deal with it and move on despite her strong feelings for this guy.

General Comment:I think annabean's got it the best. I was recently reading Piece, which is a compilation of short stories, and in Day of The Dead, the narrator tries to make a list of things she can do without her boyfriend. This song reminds me of it.

General Comment:She's not in love with a guy that's taken. She PURPOSELY sleeps with guys who are taken, and has male friends with benefits, and does all the things people do when they're scared of commitment. Otherwise "I cannot fall in love" doesn't make sense.

General Comment:i think she can go through all the motions, but not love him, maybe because of his girl.

General Comment:This is a fun song and probably my favorite by Rilo Kiley, but it's hard to ignore how similar it is to "I Could Be The One" by Donna Lewis. Not accusing anyone of anything, but it is definitely a striking resemblence.

General Comment:when jenny sang this at a live show a few years ago, she said she wrote this a very long time ago, and really didn't know what she was thinking at the time. :) seemed kinda embarrassed about it, and sang it very reluctantly.
