Oh yeah!

I hear you talking when I'm on the street,
Your mouth don't move but I can hear you speak.
What's the matter with the boy?
He don't come around no more,
Is he checking out for sure?
Is he gonna close the door on me?
I'm always hearing voices on the street,
I want to shout, but I can't hardly speak.
I was making love last night
To a dancer friend of mine.
I can't seem to stay in step,
'Cause she come ev'ry time that she pirouettes over me.
And I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming,
I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping.
I'm zipping through the days at lightning speed.
Plug in, flush out and fire the fuckin' feed.
Heading for the overload,
Splattered on the dirty road,
Kick me like you've kicked before,
I can't even feel the pain no more.
And I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming, (only get them off)
I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping.
Feel so hypnotized, can't describe the scene.
Its all mesmerized, all that inside me.
The sunshine bores the daylights out of me.
Chasing shadows moonlight mystery.
Headed for the overload,
Splattered on the dirty road,
Kick me like you've kicked before,
I can't even feel the pain no more.
And I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming (only get them off, get them off),
I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping (only get them off, get them off).
I only get my rocks off while I'm dreaming (only get them off, get them off),
I only get my rocks off while I'm sleeping (only get them off, get them off).
(Only get them off, get them off) (only get them off, get them off)

General Comment:this ain't about smack, maybe in a line or two, but not in its whole meaning. the line

"plug in, flash out, and fire the fucking feed"

is about music playing, music trance, the engagement of your soul with your instruments.
the song is not about gay experiencies, is about the fast and tyring life of mick and keith

"i'm zipping through the days at lighting speed"

line prooves it, and if you add the line that comes afterwards, even more.

don't you have anything more important to do than making fun of two of the greatest musicians alive?

General Comment:What ztraycat said is partly what I was thinking, too.

I think there are definite references to drugs and sex in the song, but it's also about making music.

This was a great choice as the lead off track on this album, because it sort of summarizes the whole experience of recording the album: a whirlwind of sex, drugs and rock & roll. With a killer horn section. ;)

General Comment:"Plug in, flush out and fire the fuckin' feed" is musicianspeak for pluggin in to the amps, flushin out the feedback and firing the fuckin feed of crisp, clean, clear, pure power rock & roll music to the mixing console.

General Comment:its about heroin and the sleepy trance like state that the drug induces and keiths addiction to the drug- pure and simple.

you can see keith in this state after a gig in cocksucker blues (documentary following the stones on the subsequent tour to exile.)

all the lyrics to the song make sense in this context.

General Comment:It's about getting your rocks off.... but it's also the incrediby kick ass opening tune on this album, which is the best stones album, for me at least... I fully understand it. I basically lived it, although don't take that to mean I did anything like Keith did. Maybe just what Mick did. This album is about partying as a way of life, maybe not a permanent one, but one you almost assume is permanent at the time because you are too young to know it isn't exactly the case...... the opening riff off Keith's and just the typically Keith tuning and chords, and the pace/subject matter... it opens it with a bang, and then they have different paced tunes throughout (it's a double album worth of tunes)... just love it because it's about being in the exact moment of time for people who are really really fun to go there with. I'm a big fan of Keith's I just think that it's hard to be Keith sometimes. When he's on, he's driving things and Mick is right there with him... I don't think Mick is comfortable with the album but that's just Mick being Mick I guess... it's coming out remastered, with unreleased tracks... maybe Mick approves of it more now.

General Comment:Ironic that a song about the depression of being on heroin has such a happy musical arrangement. The brass kicks ass.

ExiledOnMain from 10-05-2007 hit the nail on the head with his/her interpretation.

I think the 2nd verse may be an allusion to Tony Sanchez - one of Keith's gofer's and drug buddies - Sanchez worked for Keith and would often score for Anita & himself. Tony's girl at the time was a dancer.

Knowing this if you go back to 1st verse it may be Keith, in his selfish addiction, pissed that Tony has not shown up with the heroin.

3rd is about the injection, rush of it... the first line may be using cocaine. Coke & Herion sometimes would go hand in hand. Someone would be "zipping through the days at lightning speed", then take some heroin to slow down.

    Thoughts?

General Comment:The song is about both drugs and sex, and can obviously be taken both ways.

It's about a point where your so high up, your so fucked up on the drugs and into all kinds of sex that life just seems dull and pointless, because you've accomplished all those bullshit rock n roll fantasies and the only fun you can ever have is in your dreams.

And yeah, it's definitely about heroine too. "Heading for the overload, splattered on a dusty road, kick me like you've kicked me before, I cant' even feel the pain anymore" is definitely a heroine reference. Overload, splattered, kicking the habit, if any of you know anything about heroine, you'll understand.

General Comment:daylights is another term for conciousness so 'bore the daylights out of me' means it was so boring you fell asleep

General Comment:It's not about sexual problems. He makes love to the dancer, right?
Definitely about drugs and the heroin lifestyle Keef was living back then as allude to by ExileonMain.
One of my top 5 Stones tracks of all time.
