Lyrics for Wild Horses as interpreted by spliphstar

Wild Horses Lyrics
Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady you know who I am
You know I can't let you slide through my hands

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses couldn't drag me away

I watched you suffer a dull, aching pain
Now you've decided to show me the same
No sweeping exits or offstage lines
Can make me feel bitter or treat you unkind

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses couldn't drag me away

I know I dreamed you a sin and a lie
I have my freedom but I don't have much time
Faith has been broken, tears must be cried
Let's do some living after we die

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, we'll ride them someday

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, we'll ride them someday

What I have heard is that this song started out being about Keith leaving his son Marlon to go out on tour, but Mick took it over, and wrote it about Marianne. She made the statement that wild horses couldn't drag her away when she awoke from a drug induced coma. That was the inital inspriation for the song, they all thought it was a good line for a song. She was a complete addict and was not only self destructive, but she caused problems for Mick and their relationship had become very temultous. Both of them had affairs and would treat the other badly, but they still had a lot of love between them. The Stones management had been encouraging Mick to break it off with her because she wasn't good press for him. She said that Mick wrote her the song as a last ditch effort to save their relationship even though they both knew it was over. It makes sense when you read the lyrics, and it's really sad.

I heard that the first two lines of the song were written by Keith when he started to write lyrics for a song about his son. I heard that Mick wrote the rest of the song, but whom I'm not quite sure, as I've heard many different stories.
This song is one of my favorite songs ever. I first heard this song when I was really young, I remember hearing it on the radio while on a drive one spring night. I heard it at a time when I was going through a lot of things, so it always has had a special meaning to me. Today, this song reminds me of my boyfriend and I. The first line, to me, reminds me of childhood and how fast it went by, and the second line reminds me of how he bought me the things I wanted. I am that graceless lady, and he just won't let me go just like that. In the second verse, it speaks of a dull aching pain. In my life I've suffered through a lot of things and sometimes I take it out on him, but no matter what I do he still loves me and treats me kindly. The line in the third verse, "..I don't have much time," reminds me of how fast people grow up and reminds us to make the best of it. One of my favorite lines is "let's do some living after we die" because it gives me faith that we will live together in the next life. "Wild horses, we'll ride them some day" is another one of my favorite parts because it's like we'll be doing amazing things like that in life, I think it signifies that we'll live our dreams and be together, to conquer what we want in the open world. I love the chorus especially, because it's like something as beautiful as wild horses couldn't drag me away from him or from life itself. I'm also really into horses and I ride them, so that's another personal meaning this song has to me. I want this song to be played at my wedding.

If you like this song you should check out Gino Vanelli's "Wild Horses". It's more upbeat, but just as good, if not better.

This song was played at my brother's funeral, so this is kind of a special song to me. It seems to be a pretty big song for a funeral, as my friends dad had it at his funeral as well. I think it's about going through a hard time in any relationship and knowing there is not much time to fix things. The line "let's do some living after we die" I think is explaying that a potentially perfect relationship was never able to happen for what ever reason, so there must be a chance for it after death. Great song.

Numbernine is right. I met Keef once and asked him about this. He said that he wrote the first lines about his young son Marlon and the amount of time he spent away from him. Mick later took it over and turned it into one of the weirdest, but most touching songs the Stones ever did. And it's Mick's best vocal performance since No Expectations.

i absolutely love this song...possibly one of the best "love songs" ever. just shows how versatile the stones are. it's sad but hopeful at the same time. whatever girl this song was written about was extremely lucky.

it's all soul. awesome.

Very beautiful song. Sorry to break it to you all but i think the Mazzy Star cover of this song is even more gorgeous than the original. just my opinion. The girl has the voice of an angel. kinda ethereal (like the song). the way she harmonises the chorus (especially at the end) is breath-taking.

"wild, wild horses, well ride them some day."

I heard that Keith wrote the chorus about his son Marlon shortly after he was born then Mick took it and wrote about a girl, I don't remember if it was Marianne Faithfull or not.

i love this song so much. okay i actually read about this in an interview with the stones. the chorus and riff was written by keith richards and mick worked on the lyrics. it is not about mick's relationship with marianne, at least he "doesn't think it is." but mick did record it shortly after their breakup that is why the vocals are so sad and heartfelt.

I love this song, absolutely gorgeous. I originally heard the Charlotte Martin cover (beautiful, very well done, sounds very different) so I wanted to find the original. I was surprised how emotion was in it, this song moves me to tears.
I see it as a promise-no matter what happens, no matter what they do, no matter what tries to divide them, he'll always love her. (or her him, depending on the version...^^;; )

For EW's "Top 50 Love Songs", this one is listed. It says that the song was written to describe the hardship of life on the road, but could easily be thought of a love song.

"lets do some living after we die"- freedom, liberation, almost a Romeo and Juliet type sentiment I suppose. Not being able to live in this world,so hoping to be together in the next. An idealistic, bittersweet lyric!
