Lyrics for Wild Horses as interpreted by spliphstar

Wild Horses Lyrics
Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady you know who I am
You know I can't let you slide through my hands

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses couldn't drag me away

I watched you suffer a dull, aching pain
Now you've decided to show me the same
No sweeping exits or offstage lines
Can make me feel bitter or treat you unkind

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses couldn't drag me away

I know I dreamed you a sin and a lie
I have my freedom but I don't have much time
Faith has been broken, tears must be cried
Let's do some living after we die

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, we'll ride them someday

Wild horses couldn't drag me away
Wild, wild horses, we'll ride them someday

TEARS MUST BE CRIED...because This One Meant SOMETHING...

LET’S DO SOME LIVING AFTER WE DIE…some day…To This Life That Is Killing Us…when we will…slow down and simply enjoy our time together…some day…When We Meet Again…

WILD HORSES COULDN’T DRAG ME AWAY
WILD, WILD HORSES, WE’LL RIDE THEM SOME DAY

WILD HORSES COULDN’T DRAG ME AWAY
WILD, WILD HORSES, WE’LL RIDE THEM SOME DAY

Let’s assume that—“Wild horses couldn’t drag me away”—IS what Marianne Faithfull said to Mick & Keith when she…First Came Back From Very Near Death:

> THEY—Mick & Keith & The Rest of The Rolling Stones…Brian & Bill & Charlie, et.al…THEY ARE THE “WILD HORSES”—They Were The Horsemen of Her Apocalypse. Life with These Wild Horses could NOT “Drag her away” from This Life…YET…Although They Came “Bloody Close”…AND…By 1969—Brian Jones—one of the Rolling Stones Band’s Founding Members—WAS DEAD. Someday…SHE&WE ALL WILL LEARN TO “Ride The Amazing Wild Horses”…Instead of Being Pushed &/or Dragged Along…In Manners That Are Too Fast & Too Rough & Too Out-of-Control—For Our Own Good…If Not Theirs.

> The “Wild Horses” of Marianne Faithfull’s Near Apocalypse were the Same Horses that dragged So Many Others of the 1960’s and beyond to Mental&Physical Breakdowns…& All Too Often—Death:

1. Excessive Consumption of a Myriad of Dugs—
2. Excessive Consumption of Alcoholic Spirits—
3. Malnutrition Due To Inadequate&Erratic&Interrupted Meals—
4. Dyssomnias&Parasomnias&Psychiatric-Meltdowns Due To Woefully Inaduquate&Erratic&Interrupted Sleep
5. Excessive Consumption of Uncommitted or Uncertain&Unpredictable Temporarily-Committed Sexual Encounters—Meeting Too Many Demands With Insufficient Support &/or Nurturing of Any Kind…For Far Too Long

To Mick Jagger’s assertion…“Everyone always says this was written about Marianne (Faithfull), but I don't think it was; that was all well over by then”…I have a couple other quotes and a final observation:

> “If you remember the 60's, you weren't there” -Robin Williams
> "Ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies" -Oliver Goldsmith

Anyone Who Knows Anything About How Guys’ Minds Work RE:
Deep-Messy-Personal-Baggage…
Will Know That Mick’s Statement—IN TRUTH—CONFIRMS That The Song IS—About Marianne Faithfull…

IT’S NEVER…OVER…BUT MOST GUYZ SIMPLY—DO NOT WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT…beyond the few distilled &/or cryptic phrases that they have crafted to cover The Sensitive Parts of Their Life’s…Hiz/Story…

And…in efforts to preempt the airing of Her/Story...What Guyz WILL OFTEN DO IS...Talk About Is…How “IT” Is SoooooNOT About HER…After All…HOW Would SHE Know…Anything About Anything…When MOST of THAT TIME…SHE Was OUT of HER MIND??…and I was Cold-Stone Sober.

COULD MAKE ME FEEL BITTER OR TREAT YOU UNKIND… no…none of this will alter my feelings nor my responses 2U…Adult/Child…whom I’ve loved…but am at a loss to…save

WILD HORSES COULDN’T DRAG ME AWAY
WILD, WILD HORSES, COULDN’T DRAG ME AWAY…tho’ they came…close…very close

I KNOW I DREAMED YOU A SIN AND A LIE…in the Mind’s Eye of my dreams you were…evil & untrue…or was that My Own Reflection that my dreamweaver mind presented to me wearing…Your Face…Who knows??…Who Cares??…NOT me

I HAVE MY FREEDOM BUT I DON’T HAVE MUCH TIME…I’m Booked Solid—Baby—Doing What I Want To Do…Doing What I’m Meant To Do…the share of my time for you…& the rest of my posse…are “the crumbs” that fall from my…TIMETABLE…so…hold on tight and keep up with me…Your Pacesetter…if you can

FAITH HAS BEEN BROKEN”…this line of Wild Horses can refer to BOTH:

> The “Broken Fidelities” in The Crazed&FAST TRACKED 24/7 Rolling Stones 1960’s-1970’s WORLD of Sex&Drugs&Rock’n’Roll

AND

> “Marianne Faithfull has been Broken”…overdosing nearly to her death on “This Life” as a Rolling Stones/Mick Jagger muse…which must have been one hellava “Life In The Fast Lane—Everything—All The Time” existence…SHE must have been Truly Special for them to have even “Noticed” her going MIA…let alone vowing to shed tears while they “sit and watch as [her life nearly does] go by”…

> And, of course, other interpretations, as well.

This Song...Wild Horses...Operates On MANY-MANY Levels of Truth …Factual & Symbolic… Coincidence???

CHILDHOOD LIVING IS EASY TO DO…as just a bunch of Big Kids…getting whatever we want…whenever we want…at very high Self-Indulgence/Responsibility ratios

THE THINGS YOU WANTED I BOUGHT THEM FOR YOU…we had…“Christmas”…every day…only…WE Were “The Babe(s)”

GRACELESS LADY YOU KNOW WHO I AM…and I always thought this line started out “Gracious lady”…how close these opposites sound to each other…when they are PRONOUNCED by “YOU KNOW WHO”… who also made the line in Live With Me—I got nasty habits; I take tea at three—SOUND LIKE –I got nasty habits; I take THC…After All…”YOU KNOW WHO” IS A MASTER of…Slips of The Tongue

YOU KNOW I CAN’T LET YOU SLIDE THROUGH MY HANDS…I will hold on 2U…all will KNOW that I tried to keep you from crashing & burning…When We Were All Flying Too Damn High…

WILD HORSES COULDN’T DRAG ME AWAY
WILD, WILD HORSES, COULDN’T DRAG ME AWAY…tho’ they tried to…even if they did not realize what-all they were…doing

I WATCHED YOU SUFFER A DULL ACHING PAIN…the Void of Loss&Abandonment&Insecurity that a child suffers when their Mom & Dad & Home…crack & break & die away—that no shower of “Gifts” then or later in life will ever…Make Full

NOW YOU DECIDED TO SHOW ME THE SAME…my heart’s all but torn out and what remains is heavy with grief…which—after all—is only how you have felt…for as long as you can remember…

NO SWEEPING EXITS OR OFFSTAGE LINES…No Little Queenie-Get off of my cloud-Drama routines…No “19th nervous breakdowns-'Cause you see I'm on losing streak…and just can’t get no satisfaction…Bitch

This song is my favorite in the Stones' repertoire. I've heard several versions: The Sundays, Elvis Costello, and Alicia Keys. Nobody comes close to the original - stark and beautiful.

when i hear the song it sounds like it was written for Marianne. it's stunning though, and since they probably wrote it as a shared effort, so it is a combination of meanings. i heard Jerry Hall comment "that it was her favorite song of the stones', although it was written for Bianca." who knows? maybe she was always jealous of Marianne. I would be too, if I was her!

I dont know. Does anyone think maybe Mick is talking about heroin? Keith even talks about not being Dragged Away. I want to believe its a love song for a girl not a drug. Am I way off?

In which Keith/Mick try their hand at a country ballad...and absolutely knock one out of the park. Wild horses, couldn't drag me away. That phrase alone is golden. A tiny little phrase that evokes love and devotion and wide open plains and wild beauty all at the same time. Keef, yer really out did yerself with this one! A gift from heaven.

The verse lyrics don't really have quite the same effect on me as the chorus, at times they meanders. The best line is "know I can't let you slide through my hands" which really jives with the yearning vibe of the title phrase.

this song is about a drug addicted lady and her dealer. The dealer is singing the narrative. horse is a reference to "heroine". It's a very clever play on words...

this song has always been one of my favorites by the stones. when i was growing up i adored it, and it has special meanings around how we met. he lives far away and i remember that this song was playing the night before he left and i was embracing him for so long and i couldn't help but cry.
i still like it for its artistic beauty but every time i hear it now i tear up. its amazing what associating emotions with senses can do...

Keith came up with the title and chorus for the song...he wrote it about his son. Mick wrote the verses.

One of the saddest and greatest songs of all time. Actually, this IS the greatest song of all time (tied for first place with at least a dozen others though, of course haha)...

I know this song is about a man but I can really apply it to my situation, that being unrequited love. There so many hundreds of songs and quotes that talk about unrequited love, so I get confused, but this song sums up my resolve. The person is someone who was my best friend who I lost when he discovered I loved him because of a jealous girlfriend and mistakes made by me and by him. Basically in the end it just died. But I think of him everyday, and I will give him the space "she" (his girlfriend) wants until he sees how horrible she really is, and then we'll be best friends again. I know I screwed up, but so did he, and so did she. Wild Horses couldn't drag me away from him, he can cut me off in every way shape or form and be as rude to me as he likes, I know what we had and I know I can get it back.

The most beautiful song by the Stones...

I'd like to thank you, Tinypinkdancer27, for having cited Gram Parsons : he was a friend of Keith Richards, and has sung "Wild Horses" 1 year before it was issued on "Sticky Fingers" (Parsons had a band called The Flying Burrito Brothers). To me, Mick Jagger's vocals are deeply inspired by Parsons' early version.

And he was a truly great songwriter too...

Whenever I want to cry, I plug in my headphones, and play this song, switch off the lights, and sing along. And by the time "...after we die"....

This is a beautiful song, and the acoustic guitars are very captivating. If I'm correct (though it might have been discussed already) that it's about a man on the road, yearning about his family.

This song is so close to my heart. My father passed away a little over five months ago due to complications of cancer. Even though I only had 15 years to know him, we were so close. The Rolling Stones was by FAR his favorite band, and he was basically obsessed with them, and this was his favorite song of theirs. My best memory of him was a Rolling Stones concert at Giants Stadium on either September 26th or 27th, 2007. Every time I hear it, it makes me think of so many memories. It's such a sad and beautiful song. I thank The Rolling Stones every day for providing me with these memories.

I *love* this song. I'm sure the Stones version is great, but I prefer the Lucinda Williams/Elvis Costello version. Very great lyrics, no matter who it's sung by.

I feel really dumb now. Here I thought it was about death, and I still think so. Wild horses is symbolc of like the grim reaper and death, and how death couldnt take one of the band members just yet.
