The meaning is that man has no intrinsic meaning but is still able to balance power but only within himself and from an outside source obviously. Namely from first taking from others and so on.

This song covers a lot of concepts.
Primarily it is a description of today's rebel hero, Tom Sawyer.
This person is independent and self-aware.
Several in TS recurr in other Rush songs:
..."He knows that changes aren't permanent...but Change is": change is the only constant
..."Love and life are deep...maybe as his eyes are wide": reality is defined by our perception of it.

Rush puts on an amazing show, i say them on the vapor trails tour a few months ago.....they played for almost 3 hours...wow it was simply incredable. they opened up with this one and then went into the trees...

dewsar-p944 is exactly right...rush has to b the best band i've ever seen live. they put on a better show than bands half their age. this song is a great opener
