I got a faulty parachute
I got a stranger's friend
An exciting change in
My butchers blend
A symbol on the ceiling
With the flick of a switch
My new found hero
In the enemy's ditching

Well somebody's something was left in the room
And man now that its gone well of course we assume
That somebody else needed something so bad
That they took everything that somebody had

Losing hope is easy
When your only friend is gone
And every time you look around
Well, it all, it all just seems to change

The mark was left
Man it's never the same
Next time that you shoot
Make sure that you aim
Open windows with passing cars
A brand new night
With the same old stars

Losing hope is easy
When your only friend is gone
And every time you look around
Well, it all, it all just seems to change

Feed the fool
A piece of the pie
Make a fool of his system
Make a fool of his mind
Give him bottles of lies
And maybe he'll find
His place in heaven
Cause he might just die

Losing hope is easy
When your only friend is gone
And every time you look around
Well, it all, it all just seems to change
But hanging on is easy
When you've got a friend to call
When nothings making sense at all
You're not the only one that's afraid of change

My Interpretation:I got a faulty parachute, I got a stranger's friend An excitin' change in my butchers blend A symbol on the ceilin' with the flick of a switch Yeah, my new found hero and the enemy's ditchin'

Nothing trustworthy enough to rely on. Being friends with someone who is a stranger is not a friend at all. There are new changes in life that are not liked (most likely not planned) and he is calling out for a hero (symbol- flick of a switch... batman hero signal) that may frighten the enemy (I take this as God and Satan)

Well somebody's something was left in the room And now that its gone well of course we assume That somebody else needed something so bad That they took everything somebody had

People in this world will take what you have and are willing to hurt you in order to help themselves. We are selfish people. Most likely he was let down somehow by the person he felt was his best friend

Losin' hope is easy When your only friend is gone And every time you look around Well it all, it all just seems to change

This line is what drives me to this song. Oh how I hate change.

The mark was left, man, it's never the same Next time that you shoot make sure that you aim Open windows with passin' cars A brand new night with the same old stars

The damage is done; I guess you can say their relationship will never be the same once that trust is gone. Make sure you’re letting down the right person next time. Cars passing by can symbolize you feeling stuck in the same troubled spot.

Losin' hope is easy When your only friend is gone And every time you look around Well it all, it all just seems to change
Feed the fool a piece of the pie Make a fool of his system, make a fool of his mind Give him bottles of lies and maybe he'll find His place in Heaven 'cause he might just die

I take it he is being ironically sarcastic to whoever hurt him... letting em know there was serious damage done and it hurts so bad... he might just die

Losin' hope is easy When your only friend is gone And every time you look around Well it all, it all just seems to change
But hangin' on is easy When you've got a friend to call When nothin's makin' sense at all You're not the only one who's afraid of change

Where do you buy friends like these is my question? I just recently lost touch of my best friend. I’ve never had a friend like her and all of the sudden we slowly stopped texting and hanging out. God it’s already hard for me to open up to people and there’s no amount of anything that can replace a good friend. I need you in times like these Oli :(

General Comment:I imagine a person who has only one friend, and they lose that one friend to someone else. I love the bit that goes, "Next time that you shoot / Make sure that you aim." Because it's easy to let someone make an impression on you, but harder to leave a mark on someone.

General Comment:I think in general, losing hope is easy and can be unexpected and crushing. Anything can make you lose hope, such as an idol shot down, and you can do desperate things when you feel like you need to gain hope. It's about how change can be scary or difficult. The part about feeding the fool could represent telling someone that everything is fine, someone who's never experience hardships or is naive.
When you have someone on your side, such as a friend to call, it makes gaining hope easier.

My Interpretation:I think this song is about a break up... The drive by shooting is a metaphore of the coldness in which the break up happened... and that he wished she did this to someone else...

I am using he/she.. just for convenience...

I relate to this song since I am in exactly a same situation... :-)

But my interpretation might be wrong....

    --
    I got a faulty parachute
    I got a stranger's friend
    An exciting change in
    My butchers blend
    A symbol on the ceiling
With the flick of a switch
    My new found hero
    In the enemy's ditching
***--> I think this is the state he is in right now... falling deeper and deeper... total confusion... everything happened so suddenly with the flick of a switch the relationship broke

    --
Well somebody's something was left in the room
And man now that its gone well of course we assume
That somebody else needed something so bad
That they took everything that somebody had
***--> he had developed dreams to be with her and it got taken away by her... because she needed so badly a change.. that was inflicted with the flick of switch

    --
    The mark was left
    Man it's never the same
    Next time that you shoot
    Make sure that you aim
    Open windows with passing cars
    A brand new night
    With the same old stars
****--> he is in pain... in real pain... next time make sure that you aim... i.e. pick the another guy to "hurt" him.. not me...
Open windows with passing cars... I think he is weary to meet another one.. he mistrusts new girls because of the pain he suffered... this guy is really in the thick of it...

    --
    Feed the fool
    A piece of the pie
Make a fool of his system
Make a fool of his mind
    Give him bottles of lies
    And maybe he'll find
    His place in heaven
    Cause he might just die
--> this is what she did to him before they broke up.... she was great to him, making him pies, feeding him, nurturing him.... making him drink...bottles of wine... his mind started creating illusions...
and now he says: go on.. feed the fools.. (this is how you operate... you make men into fools and then you kill the relationship)

General Comment:Clearly he lost someone close to him from a drive by shooting.

("Next time that you shoot, Make sure that you aim, Open windows with passing cars")

I like the message in this song - don't give up.

General Comment:well.. i love music and to me .. this song talks about losing somebody.. in this case it could be a girlfriend .. and like feeling the way ppl usually feel when they know they're never seeing somebody again.. someone they love.. knowing and remembering the good times that will never come back and at the end of the song he talks about having someone else to make you feel better, maybe liek a good friend, in my case when i'm feeling down i have a best friend who is female and understands my pain so just by calling her or hanging out with her and talking to her i feel a whole lot better,,, thats what i think about this song, i love this man, he's so good!

General Comment:I've listened to this song dozens and dozens of times, in both good and bad times... and I'm sitting here listening to it right now... ready to cry. And you know what's weird about that? Nothing's wrong!!! What a great song to invoke such emotion.

General Comment:I had an epiphany about this song last night when I was watching The Goonies. You know the part when they get to the wishing well and they find the "rich stuff" then Andie talks about how she used to think that when she threw a coin in it turned into her wish and then they decide that they can't take the coins because they're other people's wishes.

Well somebody's something was left in the room
And man now that its gone well of course we assume
That somebody else needed something so bad
That they took everything that somebody had

the something that was left was somebody's wish/dream and somebody else took that away from them and that wish/dream was all that somebody had. but maybe somebody else had problems or low self esteem (maybe?) and to make themselves feel better they had to take somebody's wish/dream away.
