Lyrics for No Shelter as interpreted by fresh

No Shelter Lyrics
The main attraction - distraction
got ya number than nnumber than numb
Empty ya pockets son; they got you thinkin that
What ya need is what they sellin
Make you think that buyin is rebellin
From the theaters to malls on every shore
Tha thin line between entertainment and war
The frontline is everywhere, there be no shelter here
Speilberg the nightmare works so push it far
Amistad was a whip, the truth was feathered and tarred
Memory erased, burned and scarred
Trade in ya history for a VCR

Cinema, simulated life, ill drama
Fourth Reich culture - Americana
Chained to the dream they got ya searchin for
The thin line between entertainment and war

There be no shelter here
Tha frontline is everywhere

Hospitals not profit full
Yet market bulls got pockets full
To advertise some hip disguise
View tha world from American eyes
The poor adore keep fiendin' for more
Tha thin line between entertainment and war
They fix the need, develop the taste
Buy their products or get laid to waste
Coca-Cola is back in the veins of Saigon
And Rambo too, he got a dope pair of Nikes on
And Godzilla pure muthafuckin filler
To keep ya eyes off the real killer

Cinema, simulated life, ill drama
Fourth Reich culture - Americana
Chained to the dream they got ya searchin for
Tha thin line between entertainment and war

American eyes, American eyes....
View the world from American eyes
Bury the past, rob us blind
And leave nothin behind

Just stare
Relive the nightmare

ahh i never noticed the double thing in "american eyes/americanize". to me it's pure anti capitalism, simple as that, i don't really understand the politics but thats how it seems. from a lyrical point of view this is one of my favourite Rage songs

"Into your pockets son they got you thinkin' that
What you need is what they sellin'
Make you think that buyin' is rebellin'"
-This one is Rage' point of view on advertisng and the media. Most adventisments today try to make it look like buying their product will set you apart from the crowd...when all you've done is given your money to a huge corporation. I especially like the part that says "trade in your history for a vcr" This pretty much sums up what i believe...that most people would rather watch a fictional story than learn about their heritage.

This song appeared on the Godzilla soundtrack, and Rage Against the Machine is dissing the whole of the entertainment industry (including Godzilla and its director Steven Speilberg) and saying that the entertainment industry is working in conjunction with the government to keep the citizens complacent and unaware of the real-life dramas of the world (Godzilla pure motherfuckin' filler [to] Get your eyes on the real killer.)

They also attack other issues like how advertising companies make you think that you are cool for buying their products (They got you thinkin' that what you need is what they sellin' / Make you think that buyin' is rebellin'.)

I really like this song because it was lyrics that mean a lot to me (and cool music too.) This song also appears as Track 13 on the Australian version of 'The Battle of Los Angeles.'

Oh, and by the way, the lyrics above are pretty wrong, so try and find them somewhere else if you want the real deal.

I agree aneurysm......
This song is taking back the pleasure of being on the Godzilla soundtrack. For my point to be valid, though, the lyric is "Godzilla pure mothafuckin' filler....to keep your eyes off the real killer"

Basically, it means that the average American is hypnotized by scary movies and we go to bed at night scared of the monsters in our closet or the ghosts in the TV (Poltergeist) or the great big monsters (Godzilla) or even the cannibalistic psychopaths (Silence....a great movie though) while our government is fucking us over by leading us into pure capitalism and in extreme cases rich, white dominance.
Go to bed and have a different kind of nightmare tonight.

"godzilla pure motherfuckin' filler, [to] take your eyes off the real killer..."
That is saying that the media feeds us stories about Bill Clinton's affair, or some other useless shit to take our eyes off of them, and the wrongs they commit every day.

parts of this song make me think its about globalization.
like the following lines:
To advertise some hip disguise
View tha world from American eyes

globalization of the western culture
also these lines:
They fix the need, develop the taste
Buy their products or get laid to waste
Coca-Cola is back in the veins of Saigon
And Rambo too, he got a dope pair of Nikes on

http://www.ratm.net/lyrics/nos.html - so you got the real thing

This only appeared on the Australian version of BOLA because it shows what America is doing to Australia, changing our culture – "American eyes, American eyes..../ Americanise, Americanise"
"There will be no shelter here" refers to Australia thinking where nice and safe in our isolated corner in the world, but with the recent events in bali it shows that we cant sit back and pretend that the actions which our government takes wont backfire on us.

Does anyone else get the feeling that the "American Eyes" line may actually go something like this:

"Americanize, Americanize
view the world from American eyes
bury the past, rob us blind
and leave nothing behind..."

Anyways, this is definitely one my favourite Rage tracks.

I just love the irony of the fact that this song was on the Godzilla soundtrack but it had nothing to do with the story of the movie, just the advertising campaign. I don't know why nobody realized this before they put it on the album. Then again, they might have, but corporate america will accept public criticism anytime if they can make money off of it.

TheGrandArdizzle I agree. I also thought it said:

"Americanize, Americanize
view the world from American eyes
bury the past, rob us blind
and leave nothing behind..."

Which would refer to America pushing its culture and ideas on the rest of the world. Although some of my friends think its just "American eyes."

Aww this song is sweet, pretty intelligent lyrics. I think it's funny they put this on the soundtrack to Godzilla.

I love that guitar solo, Tom Morello owns.

Well I would agree that its about Americanization of other countries. Though not imperialistic by definition, it does seem to be on the same tract. I especially liked the inclusion of the line "Coca-Cola is back in the veins of Saigon", which historically was noted as being interesting how when the US sent advisors and diplomats to Vietnam they expected to be the first official American in the country. To their surprise, the billboards on the streets of Saigon already had Coca-Cola advertisements. Just goes to show how insidious capitalism can be.

ok. i promise. this is my last post on rage against the machine.
Hi, im at the drive-in. you may remember me from such song meaning posts as killing in the name of, sleep now in the fire, bullet in the head and guerilla radio.

reading this stuff about rage against the machine hating capitalism and globalisation is so ridiculous it no longer amuses me as it once did.
cedric bixler of at the drive-in, whos lyrics are left-wing social commentary, just not as blatant as rage's, said in an interview that his own band can not be considered left wing, because, and i quote, "we sell t-shirts."
this is where ratm embarrass themselves and their fans. they are millionaires, these guys. they are absolutely filthy, stinking, fucking rich. and they hate the fact that america owns the world? i live in australia. if it wasnt for this globalisation i wouldnt have ever heard of this band. i wouldnt have ever forked out money for their entire catalogue.
you see, i love this band. but the gimmick has to be stopped. these guys are now filthy rich, and they did it pretending to hate people who are filthy rich.
they also were heavily anti-Christian, but 3 of the members now are in a band who sing songs about God's greatness.

people, grow up, please? Coco-cola is in Saigon, and rage against the machine is in tiny record shops in australia. its a gimmick. and it worked fucking well. just like it works for michael moore, who charges thousands of dollars for every speech he gives about hating people who charge thousands of dollars for things. and makes millions from movies talking about how anyone who makes millions off anything is a bad guy.

atthedrivein, do you really think rage was only about capitalism? how many benefit shows did they play? every band on major labels and most bands on semi major labels make plenty of money, but most of them don't do as much as rage did to give back and actually support the causes they sing about. every rage album had the addresses and contacts for all the causes that they supported. you could say (and you'd be right) that most kids who listened to them didn't do anything to support these causes, but if any of them did, then rage accomplished their goal. while most "alternative" bands in the 90's sang about nothing in particular, rage were able to get kids to at least think about politics, and while they did get rich from it, they at least got rich doing something they belived in. bands like at the drive in, anti-flag, and other bands of the sort are doing fine as far as money goes.

now i say with regret that i havent herd this particular song, although of what RATM ive herd i likes. but to a certian degree i concur with both internationalideal and atthedrivein... i dont see it possible for some dirty rightwing capitaleest peeg dorgs to fake such blatant pinko passion but on the other hand, they are filthy stinking ritch. this to is the Bono debate, is he a dirty arse-goblin or a good charitable fellow? erhaps we should see this like taxes, sure they give and give but they have the money to give and give. i earn about $100 a week, every week wen i give that $10 to that homeless person or that charity, i actually need that $10 where as RATM and stuff earn bajillions so wen they give what sounds like alot, $50000 to some charity, THATS THEYRE SPARE FUCKING CHANGE! THEYRE FUCKING POCKET LINT! im with them, yet i would like to see them giving more... unless its the unlikely case of they are giving and giving but the bank is filling faster than the pockets can be emptyed.
ps top user name internationalideal!

proof reading wouldnt kill me...
taxes is rong word. um... well if i was in their shoes what i would be doing is setting aside like $100,000 a year for the use of myself and family and the rest of the bajillions would go into needy causes.
is there a word for that?

Sounds like charity to me, jbj_42... And Bono is a 'dirty arse-goblin.'
And if it means anything, sometimes you have to work within the rules of the machine to bring it down. Not all the time, but some.
