Silent dance with death.
Everything is lost.
Torn by the arrival of Autumn.
The blink of an eye, you know it's me.
You keep the dagger close at hand.
And you saw nothing.
False love turned to pure hate.
The wind cried a lamentation,
before merging with the grey.
Demon of the fall.
Gasping for another breath.
She rose, screaming at closed doors.

Seductive faint mist forging
through the cracks in the wall.
I shan't resist.
In tears for all of eternity.
She turned around and faced me for the first time.
Run away, run away.
Just one second, and I was left with nothing.
Her fragrance still pulsating through damp air.
That day came to an end.
And she had lost in me, her credence.

My Interpretation:MAYH is a concept album as has already been said. I find that this song is when the ghost tries to confront his lover again after having seen her with another man. He had planned to kill her "You keep the dagger close at hand". In the process he turns his lover against him "False love turned to pure hate". He can't bring himself to kill her when he realizes what he has become "Demon Of The Fall". His lover sees him, realizes that hes the one who has been haunting her, and runs "She turned around and faced me for the first time. Run away, run away". He stays in the house and reflect on what he has done and he still can feel her prescence everywhere, knowing he can never have her again "Just one second, and I was left with nothing. Her fragrance still pulsating through damp air"

General Comment:I like it that Opeth has many songs about girls. Why not just understand them like the usual pop songs, in this case, the "Demon of the Fall" is trying to rape the girl inside her house,

She rose, screaming at closed doors.
    Seductive faint mist forging
through the cracks in the wall.

that is to say, the Demon hasn't seen her completely but already had a glimpse of her through the wall, and smelled her seductiveness.

"Run away Run away", is sung by clean vocals, but makes no difference, it's still the Demon's thoughts. The Demon was thinking, "You can run away, but I'll still catch ya."

"CREDENCE" is but the credence of her virginity. She didn't die.

That's just my understanding, and I found it to make a lot of sense too.

General Comment:My thoughts on this song are pretty much the same.

For me the part "Seductive faint mist forging
through the cracks in the wall." is him finally starting to take physical form as the Demon Of the Fall. She then "turned around and faced me for the first time." This is when she sees him for the first time as the Demon. But for a split second he is still the man he once was & not corrupted by the Demon he has become and then tells her to "Run away, Run away!" because he can't fight what he has become much longer and will kill her to take her back to the land of souls. I still cant decide if he kills her or if she runs away, leaving him behind, forced to walk the earth alone for eternity as the Demon Of the Fall because he can not move on.

But who really knows? Only Mikael. These are just my thoughts.

General Comment:I'm sure that this song in particular is about the ghost of a man trying to kill his ex-lover but he cannot do it. "In tears for all of eternity"

"False love turned to pure hate" could also describe how the ghost finds his lover with another man and he becomes very angry, then merges with the gray.

General Comment:The whole album is just about a man haunting a woman as the seasons fade into each other. The fact that every song has the name of the one that follows as the last word (And even the instrumentals had lyrics on the insert, to add to the story)

General Comment:Oh man, like so many other Opeth songs this one is just so haunting. When he growls out "You keep the dagger close at hand." and then "And you saw nothing." I just get the sense of fear because Akerfeldt writes such good lyrics and he can practically pull you into the scenes that he depicts in them. That feeling of being helpless against something you can't even see is just breath taking.
