Mother
Tell your children not to walk my way
Tell your children not to hear my words
What they mean
What they say
Mother
Mother
Can you keep them in the dark for life
Can you hide them from the waiting world
Oh mother
Father
Gonna take your daughter out tonight
Gonna show her my world
Oh father
Not about to see your light
But if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Till you're bleeding
Not about to see your light
And if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's
Mother
Tell your children not to hold my hand
Tell your children not to understand
Oh mother
Father
Do you want to bang heads with me
Do you want to feel everything
Oh father
Not about to see your light
And if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Till you're bleeding
Not about to see your light
And if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's
Yea
Not about to see your light
But if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Till you're bleeding
Not about to see your light
And if you want to find hell with me
I can show you what it's like
Whoa
Mother
Yea
Tell your children not to walk my way
Tell your children not to hear my words
What they mean
What they say
Mother
Mother
Can you keep them in the dark for life
Can you hide them from the waiting world

The song may also be about parents being overprotective with dating, and holding their children back by not allowing them to date someone a few years older, in fear that something that's inevitable anyway may happen.
This song is not about religion in any way... I can only imagine that those that perceive this song in such a way perceive EVERY song in that way, and just hate religion in general. So they see anti-religion themes in literally EVERYTHING.
The Mother being a goddess(sometimes attributed to Lillith, Eve's predecessor whose history was removed from the bible by Hebrew Scolars),the her, and the "Father" a male god, associated with organized religion (I am thinking the wears that upside down cross as an in your face to organized religions.) When he talks about fighting with "father", it is because Christianity has been so bloody, and Danzig is well educated in history, and most likely well versed in related religious theology, so that is the butting head remark, he has a lot of knowledge. Besides banging heads sounds good LOL!
He also talks about the duality or Yin/Yang of nature...the Mother and Father splitting the day as the Mother is the moon, and the father is the sun, dark and light respectively. This is also be the meaning of showing the daughter "his world", at night, meaning he would show her a different religious path.
In the first 2 stanzas, talking to the mother, I think its a way of saying a lot of what he writes about is not necessarily relevant to what one could think about in these lyrics, perhaps also not to confuse paganism (or those who worship the mother) with the devil, in future writings as the "Devil" is purely a Christian player. You cannot believe in the devil if you do not believe in God, right? And that those who worship "Mother" also need to take heed in the duality of nature: light/dark, god/ goddess, yin/yang etc. A lot of pagans worship a Goddess only, then there is the theory of "God reated and the mother nurtures. Albeit, there is much rage in this song towards the "Father" believers, usu. "Organized religions".
All of a sudden the song is not so profane. I can understand why he was so upset with the censors!
I just really heard this song for the first time 3/2012. Glenn's lyrics are deep. Now go read "Mother" again :D
Al Gore's wife, Tipper Gore and 3 other Washington wives put this committee together with the sole purpose of censorship of rock music. Eventually some of that energy was directed towards Rap and Hip Hop.
I got this from Wikipedia. This will verify that "Mother" is about the PMRC. For comical purposes I have also included Metallica reaction to the PMRC. Plus
Danzig's 1988 song "Mother" scored a top 40 hit as the most famous song about[7] the PMRC labeling and its inherent problems. This is still one of the only songs about[7] Tipper Gore and the PMRC to reach a wide audience.
As an early parody of the PMRC "explicit lyrics" warning labels, many prints of Metallica's 1986 release of their album Master Of Puppets sported a sticker on the front in the shape of a stop-sign saying:
"THE ONLY TRACK YOU PROBABLY WON'T WANT TO PLAY IS "DAMAGE, INC." DUE TO THE MULTIPLE USE OF THE INFAMOUS "F" WORD. OTHERWISE, THERE AREN'T ANY "SHITS," "FUCKS," "PISSES," "CUNTS," "MOTHERFUCKERS," OR "COCKSUCKERS" ANYWHERE ON THIS RECORD"
I think that damien666danzig and unseenpunk came closest to the answer. With out the PMRC this song would have never been.
I hope this helps.
PMRC was founded in 1985. I think he took a stance against Gore BECAUSE of this song and others like it. Please look for my recent posts and you will understand why he is so mad about it. This song does not mean what it sounds like.
Wikipedia can't verify shit.
