So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
It's been such a long time
I think I should be goin', yeah
And time doesn't wait for me, it keeps on rollin'
Sail on, on a distant highway
I've got to keep on chasin' a dream, yeah
I've gotta be on my way
Wish there was something I could say
Well, I'm takin' my time, I'm just movin' on
You'll forget about me after I've been gone
And I take what I find, I don't want no more
It's just outside of your front door
Ah yeah, it's been such a long time, it's been such a long time
Well, I get so lonely when I am without you
But in my mind, deep in my mind
I can't forget about you
Good times, and faces that remind me, yeah
I'm tryin' to forget your name and leave it all behind me
You're comin' back to find me
Well I'm takin' my time, I'm just movin' on
You'll forget about me after I've been gone
And I take what I find, I don't want no more
It's just outside of your front door, yeah, yeah, yeah
It's been such a long time, it's been such a long time
Yeah
It's been such a long time, I think I should be goin', yeah
And time dosnt wait for me, it keeps on rollin'
There's a long road, I've gotta stay in time with, yeah
I've got to keep on chasin' that dream, though I may never find it
I'm always just behind it
Well I'm takin' my time, I'm just movin' along
(Takin' my time) oh, just movin' along
(Takin' my time) ah, just takin' my time
(Takin' my time) oh, yeah
(Takin' my time) oh, oh
(Takin' my time)
(Takin' my time)
(Takin' my time)
(Takin' my time)
(Takin' my time)
I think I should be goin', yeah

I absolutely love the transition from Foreplay into Long Time where it's just the keyboard, then the drums start building up, then when it's at the climax, the lead comes in with that epic lick. Unbeatable.
One of the band's best. This used to play at all the high school dances in the late 70's. I like the way you described the song...just perfectly. Thanx.
Yes. You did describe it well quorn - I agree too.

That trembling moment right before the drum beats of "Long Time" is extremely transcendental.
It just pushes through into a whole new dimension after those beats.

There are similar moments in certain Led Zep songs where it feels like the whole universe is poised and on the verge of some amazing epiphany....
