Have you heard the original Leonard Cohen version (has a couple of differrent verses) - I think this is one of the rare cases where the cover really outdoes the original

was leonard cohen christian ? The song talks about the King David's only sin : making wrong his queen because he had seen a wonderful lady and made love with her, and then asked forgiveness to God. I don't know if this is a pro or anti christian song.

It's about being able to embrace personal differences in a relationship and love the other person despite whatever the problems you'd might have. Cohen is jewish by birth, but grew up in a liberal family and had influences from many different cultures, he now dabbles in Buddhism.

i have to say that this is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. and yes, jeff buckley has MADE this song his own. his cover COMPLETELY outdoes the Leonard Cohen version. unfortunately rufus wainright thought that it was a great idea to cover it for the soundtrack of shrek. shoot me. it was horrible. the buckley version would have been SO much better. anyway, enough rambling.

ITs the most beautiful song, saddest, beautifully sang (falsetto), I ever heard. My heart cries everytime I hear it. Jeff is along is the man with the best voice. I don't really care about religious issues if there is any. However, I would really like to know what the lyrics meant. It is a metaphore something simple, eg: relationships, lov, betrayls. Anyway. Thats all I have to say. I wish he was still alive.

Kez: Yeah, the one verse definitely is that. Glad I'm not the only one to acknowledge that.

I saw parts of this song used in a video collage by vh1 after September 11, and it took on even more personal meaning after that. Then it was used in the season finale of the West Wing, very artistically. It's just a beautiful song, chock full of meaning.

It's using relgious events, characters, and beliefs as an elaborate metaphor for different love situations where emotions are peaking. (Yes, even sex too.) I think the goal of this song is a personal definition to "hallelujah" the word, the exultation, the essence and pirpose it has.. not only with God, but within your personal world. This song truly is amazing.... and I just can't grace it with enough, pulled together words.

Maybe I'm the only one who thinks this, but I find the Rufus Wainwright much better in general. Buckley's voice does nothing for me - it barely even carries the tune - and I find that the simpler, arpeggio-based piano background in the Rufus version does more justice to the meaning of the song than Buckley's various echo effects and out of tune string instruments. The song is gorgeous either way, but it's what Jeff Buckley does with it that makes it barely able to be listened to.

I have heard people say he sings in falsetto. (Goolander, no offense) If that is falsetto, then it is the most beautiful I've ever heard. Sorry folks, he really can sing that high. LIsten to Chorpus Christi Carol on Grace and believe.... I love this song and just about every song on Grace. Mojo Pin, Eternal Life, CCC, and all the rest. Screw all the disbelievers.

i don't think it's an absolute love song, i think the lyrics are far more intelligent than that, than just some ordinary love story. I think it's all religious biased. But i don't know enough about Cohen to say if it's anti or pro-religious. I don't get the meaning yet, but for sure, it's about religion... and not just SEX !!! put off those blinkers you guys (andrea and kez) !!!!

Nickel is right - Jeff doesn't sing falsetto, he has a 5 octave range. I once stumbled across a web page that had these technical figures from a vocal coach who examined Jeff performing (I think) Mojo Pin, and their conclusion was that he was techinically a better singer than the likes of Pavarotti...for someone with no real training that is a stunning fact...

The song? It's a love song, most definitely. Love is not always sweet and fluffy - often it's damn painful. Being truly in love, you leave yourself wide open to hurt. But also, anyone who has loved someone so much that they feel physical pain will recognize themselves here...

It seems to talk about the inherent pains of love. "She broke your throne and she cut your hair" "It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah" "Love is not a victory march". Love makes so many beautiful promises and it will always disappoint in the end. Rather depressing, but very beautiful.

when i first got the "grace" album i played this song on repeat for hour. it's unbelieveably moving. it covers a huge emotional range like only a song about love could. jeff buckley's voice is, perhaps, the best in modern rock (yes i know the song is old and he's dead) but i still think that he hasn't been topped yet

This song is absolutely beautiful, i cannot put words to this song. I cannot put words to beuckley in general, listning to buckley is a truly person and higly rewarding experiece.

After hous and hours of listening I am still struggling to comprehend this song and many of his others. This man was a genius, pure musical genius.

I remember the first time I heard this song, I was lting in bed surrounded by darkness. Just me and the music. It made me sit up to attention, i had to levae it on repeat for a long long time. I cannot even describe it, buckley inspires powerful emotions within me.

The next day I hugged the guy who introduced me to jb, it is one of the greatest thigs to ever happen to me. That is no lie.
I am now a jb missionary, trying to convert anyone I feel will truly appreciate his music.

Anyway, that's me out.
Keep on enjoying life in the jb bubble.
