This is our last goodbye
I hate to feel the love between us die
But it's over
Just hear this and then I'll go
You gave me more to live for
More than you'll ever know
This is our last embrace
Must I dream and always see your face?
Why can't we overcome this wall?
Baby, maybe its just because you didn't know you at all
Kiss me, please kiss me
But kiss me out of desire, babe, not consolation
Oh, you know it makes me so angry
'Cause I know that in time, I'll only make you cry
This is our last goodbye
Did you say, "No, this can't happen to me"
Did you rush to the phone to call
Was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind
Saying maybe you didn't know him at all
You didn't know him at all, oh oh, ya didn't know
Ooo didn't know
Well, the bells out in the church tower chime
Burning clues into this heart of mine
Thinking so hard on her soft eyes
And the memories, offer signs that it's over
Over
I hate to feel the love between us die
But it's over
Just hear this and then I'll go
You gave me more to live for
More than you'll ever know
This is our last embrace
Must I dream and always see your face?
Why can't we overcome this wall?
Baby, maybe its just because you didn't know you at all
Kiss me, please kiss me
But kiss me out of desire, babe, not consolation
Oh, you know it makes me so angry
'Cause I know that in time, I'll only make you cry
This is our last goodbye
Did you say, "No, this can't happen to me"
Did you rush to the phone to call
Was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind
Saying maybe you didn't know him at all
You didn't know him at all, oh oh, ya didn't know
Ooo didn't know
Well, the bells out in the church tower chime
Burning clues into this heart of mine
Thinking so hard on her soft eyes
And the memories, offer signs that it's over
Over

I am in the process of divorcing my wife of 13 years, 16 years total together.. We had a strong love and bond with each other but we both had major issues throughout that has caused our marriage to finally fail with no way to ever reconcile.. We both agreed that there was no way of saving it, atleast not in this lifetime.. Too much damage has been done.. This does not mean i don't love her, i will always love her.. just not the way she needs me too..
Anyway, I have been thinking about writing her a letter of how i feel but found my writings always turned into anger with pointing blame onto her..
We don't talk at all other than about our kids.. Very hard to do when you have loved someone for that long to just leave that love alone..
So.. My divorce will be final come November/December 2012 and i was planning on giving her our wedding tape on that final day with a letter explaining my love for her, but insteadof a letter, im going to give her a copy of this song with lyrics printed out.. This will be my Last Goodbye to us!
Good luck to you in your life nice man!
"You gave me more to live for, more than you'll ever know" - I now knew love like this was possible.
"Kiss me out of desire, not consolation" - it was she who broke it off with me, but I wanted no consolation kiss.
"I know that in time, I'll only make you cry" - I was angry, and I know that she would still think about me in the future and cry over what might have been.
So I always interpeted the following to be broken out in a different way. It's referring to her being torn apart by the decision when it says:
Did you say "No, this can't happen to me"
Did you rush to the phone to call
Was there a voice unkind, in the back of your mind saying Maybe? (I feel the line ends there)
After she told me, I was walking around this little town in Europe, crying as" the bells in the church tower chimed".
A beautiful song about heartbreak that haunts me to this day.
I feel it refers to a Man who is clearly in love with a woman yet the man breaks things off with her because he feels that he disapointed her or that he isnt good enough for her and wont be able to satisfy her needs. He breaks things off so she can get the things that she deserves and even though he broke up with her, He will continue to charish the memories they created together
"This is our last embrace, Must I dream and always see your face?, Why cant we overcome this and more?, Baby maybe its because you didnt know me at all"
The man is tormented by his former love, He cant stop thinking about her now that its all over between the two of them. He questions himself as to why they cant overcome their problems and he tries to blame it on her, Thinking that its their fault that they cant have the relationship that he always wanted.
"Kiss me..Please kiss me, Kiss me out of desire babe not consolation, Oh you know it makes me so angry because you know that in time I will only make you cry, This is our last goodbye"
He begs her to kiss him in hopes of re-kindling their lost love. He relizes his mistake for breaking things apart and that it was him that ruined it all. He begs her to kiss him out of love and not because he asked her too. Eventually he relizes that what he is doing is stopping her from living a happy life and that he will only bring her down with him. He relizes that its finally over between them and he leaves.
"Did you say No this cant happen to me, Did you rush to the phone to call, Was there a voice unkind in the back of your mind saying Maybe you didnt know him at all"
This is from the woman's perspective and how she regrets them ending their relationship as well. Her love for him makes her want to go back to him but eventually she relizes that he was right, That they were better off apart even if it pains them to do so.
"Well the bells out in church tower chime, Burning clues into this heart of mine, Thinking so hard on her soft eyes and the memories offer signs that its over...its over"
Returning to the man's POV - He hears the wedding bells go off and it strikes him hard in his heart. He thinks about her and all the memories they had together and finally he relizes that its all over between them
"What's making him angry is that if she does kiss him 'out of consolation' not only will it fool him but it will also make him carry on the relationship. But because he's not sure he wants to be in it..he'll only end it later which will 'only make her cry'. "
I don't necessarily see it as that.
I think what he means is, if she did come back to him, (out of consolation) or out of any reasons that aren't authentic love/ desire, that they would eventually just end up back at the same point again, with her (and both of them, really) being unhappy, and needing to break it off with him again.
Just my opinion.
I just broke up with someone who truly was in love with but she fell out of love with me.
I think the lines:
"You gave me more to live for
More than you'll ever know"
are great.
I appreciate that even though it's over the relationship has made me a better person and this song really reflects that. Jeff seems sad but also grateful.
