Lyrics for Today as interpreted by Ice

Today Lyrics
Today is the greatest
Day I've ever known
Can't live for tomorrow,
Tomorrow's much too long
I'll burn my eyes out
Before I get out

I wanted more
Than life could ever grant me
Bored by the chore
Of saving face

Today is the greatest
Day I've ever known
Can't wait for tomorrow
I might not have that long
I'll tear my heart out
Before I get out

Pink ribbon scars
That never forget
I tried so hard
To cleanse these regrets
My angel wings
Were bruised and restrained
My belly stings

Today is
Today is
Today is
The greatest day

I want to turn you on
I want to turn you on
I want to turn you on
I want to turn you

Today is the greatest
Today is the greatest day
Today is the greatest day
That I have ever really known

The first line in the second verse should read "Today is the greatest day I've NEVER known."

I really like this song

No it shouldn't, that goes "Today is the greatest day I've EVER known". Anyway, this is a really, really, really great song.

Yeah, it's "ever" not "never." I just looked in the book, and it says "ever."

treestump: yeah, I guess you're right. I just listened to the song, and he sure does say "never known" in the second verse. Thanks for pointing that out.

Today was the first song, Billy Corgan wrote after the 18 month long Gish tour. Before
Today was written, Billy was depressed and suicidal. Today was a "things-can't-get any
worse" song. Today made Billy realize he should give up trying to be what everyone else
wanted him to be. "I reached a point in my life where I felt like I was living through some
old character," he(Billy) says. "It's like you assume some character and you take that as
far as it can go and then it doesn't work anymore, so you shed your skin-and that's kind of
what happened to me. I had become something that I probably am not in order to succeed
and at some point I realized that, whatever I was, was hurting me, so I needed to go
through the process of getting rid of that person. I had to kill off one part of me so that I
could go on, and some of that started in the writing of the songs."

I think that the genius of this song is the fact that it could be so hopeless sounding and beautiful at the same time so that the song both complimented and conctradicted itself. The catchy guitar, to me, represents that everything on the surface is happy and right. The depressing words show how, if you look beneath the surface, you find a whole world of darkness and hurt. It really is brilliant. In many ways, its about more than suicide, its practically a world view of everything having a nice appearance but a sad and futile depth to it. Genius in every sense

its just a feel good song that I dont find depressing at all. and who cares if he says "never" or "ever" or whatever. I thought i thought it was about being happy for once and realizing that things aren't all that bad after all.

i always thought this song was about someone who has just emerged from something that really upset him and he's looking towards all the gret things on the horizon and now he's living life to the full. But thats more derived from the feel of the music. good song too

the song is sooo amazingly beautiful. Okay, heres what I think its about, a guy gets broken hearted by a girl, and is in denial, like the "i'll tear my heart out, before I give it out." but you are right shoot and stars. And plus even the video is brilliant. I love it,
also,..why did you have a convo with the comments instead of argueing over ims? You guys are silly.

this is one of the greatest songs ever written. it's so hopeless i think it fills me up with so much hope. billy corgan is about the best poet alternative rock has ever had. mr. corgan can put the worlds of millions into his songs and that's a gift. just an amazing song. and the sad music just makes it that more amazing. just amazing.

I always thought "Today was the greatest day I've ever known" for Billy because it's the song that got him out of serious case of writer's bloc. Then he purged Siamese Dream on us! What a blessing!

This song is basically Billy's "joke" about how he wants to kill himself. Sardonically saying 'this is the greatest day of my life because from now on, things are so bad that they can't get any worse'. It's rather nihilistic, in a way. Anyone else agree?

This song is a perfect example of how you can't take the Pumpkins' lyrics at face value, no matter how straight-forward they may seem. Ever. This song was written while Billy was feeling suicidal, but, as Soot and Stars says, he didn't, and instead "killed off" the part of himself that was dragging him down. Beautifully ingenius song no matter how you look at it.

the way that the song affects us is to penetrate into our own desires and our own inhibitions, conjuring very personal images at each line-"pink ribbon scars" for some these are emotional, for others they are physical, and on the end of their pecker. or maybe thats just me.

My friend has this CD; we were listening to it at her house. This is her favorite song on it and she played it over and over again. Now it's stuck in my head. God, it's awesome!

I couldn't agree more with what whataweirdo said.

what's great about music is that it has a slightly different meaning for everyone. for me, "today" is about realizing that life's a bitch.. no matter what you do, you'll never get out of it alive. keeping that in mind, today might as well be the best day of your life, because life is very short. you try to forget all the terrible things that you've done and that have happened to you, but you just can't escape it; so move on, and be happy with where you end up.

FAVORITE PART: "i tried so hard to cleanse these regrets" AND [final chorus]
