I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free

I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love yeah
God knows God knows I've fallen in love

It's strange but it's true
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh how I want to be free baby
Oh how I want to be free
Oh how I want to break free

But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone hey
God knows got to make it on my own
So baby can't you see
I've got to break free

I've got to break free
I want to break free yeah

I want, I want, I want, I want to break free

My Interpretation:I think this is one of those songs that can be interpreted in lots of different ways. I love songs like this that can identify with so many people that need to identify with a song. For me the way I interpreted "I want to break free" is partly explored in the way it is used in the we will rock you musical. Wanting to break free from a a world that is just so false and corrupt and untrustworthy and evil, etc. And also I can identify with I want to break free, in terms of wanting to break free from my life the way and break free and change it and myself. This is one of my favoruite songs, based on the fact that it a brilliantly written song but also because the lyrics are so powerful. Songs like bohemian rhapsody are such amazing songs and so creative and imaginative. But I find that I connect more personally to the lyrics in songs like "I want to break free".

General Comment:I think this song is about someone in a relationship who's fallen in love with a different person. The first verse is about his current relationship:

"I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied I don't need you"

He does not love this person. In fact, he does not even like this person.

The second verse reveals he's fallen in love with someone else. "But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door"... but he is unsure if this person he loves returns his feelings. He wants a guarantee that if he leaves his current relationship, the one he loves will be available, so he's not left all alone.

"I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own"

He knows he should just leave, and that being in a relationship with someone he doesn't love is worse than being on his own. But he's torn, because he fears being alone.

    "So baby can't you see
    I've got to break free"

This verse is addressing the one he loves. It's within his/her power to simply say he/she returns the feelings and won't allow him to be left all alone. Then he will have the courage to finally break free.

General Comment:For me this song symbolizes my own experiences, in a way that I broke free and found myself again. Again in a world, that tells us what is nice and what not, what to do and what not.

I have always loved myself, but I had to break free to dis- and recover this love again.

Because we are what we make out of ourselves and our lives are as pleased as we let them be.

Fortunately I have learned my lesson, and thanks to Queen for sharing this great music

My Interpretation:Just another interpretation that nobody seemed to touch on (pun intended..) Deacon is writing about an addiction to self-lovin, aka masturbation. He wants to break free from the addiction; that masturbation is purely "self-satisfying"; "living without you by my side" aka his hand; he has actually fallen in love for the first time with someone else, and he's now trying to break free from the "love" he expresses with himself - because at this point of his life, it's only holding him back from living his own life free from the addiction; "God knows, got to make it on my own".
