Lyrics for Storm as interpreted by frog50000

Storm Lyrics
how long have i been in this storm
so overwhelmed by the ocean's shapeless form
waters getting harder to tread
with these waves crashing over my head

if i could just see you
everything would be alright
if i had to see you
this darkness would turn into light

and i will walk on water
and you will catch me if i fall
and i will get lost into your eyes
and everything will be alright
and everything will be alright

i know u didn't bring me out here to drown
so why am i ten feet under and upside down
barely surviving has become my purpose
cause i'm so used to living underneath the surface

if i could just see you
everything would be alright
if i could see you
this stormness would turn into light

and i will walk on water
and you will catch me if i fall
and i will get lost into your eyes
and everything will be alright

and i will walk on water
and you will catch me if i fall
and i will get lost into your eyes
and everything will be alright
and now everything is alright
everythings alright

Without a doubt this song has religious connotations.

The ocean is a metaphor for life and the storm is a metaphor for turmoil. I think this song is about a specific event rather than multiple events. He says, "If I had to see you (or, 'If I die'), this darkness would turn into light (Meet with God in Heaven)"

The chorus says that he will try the impossible and even if he fails it will be okay because God with be there to "catch me if I fall."

Ultimately, the song is about how life is full of tough times but no matter what we will all be okay.

Now, this is why the song is NOT about a girl:

1. There is no mention of a girl anywhere.
2. "I know you didn't bring me out here to drown." "Out here" represents the ocean, which represents life. A woman doesn't bring us into life. God does (according to many faiths).

For a while I thought it was possible that he could be talking about his mother but this got nullified when he says:

"So why am i ten feet under and upside down
barely surviving has become my purpose
cause i'm so used to living underneath the surface.
if i could just see you
everything would be alright
if i could see you
this stormness would turn into light."

Here he talks about losing his purpose in life and he would like to be reassured of God's existence so that way the storms would go away. However life is full of success(walking on water) and failing (catch me if I fall). If he gets reassured of God's existence then the purpose of the ocean (life) is defeated.

i completely and totally believe this song is about God. First, because of the line -and i will walk on water- it is very symbolic. two, because he says -if i could just see you- which shows he is trying to hold on to his faith Jason has talked about God and his challenges through life being the main subject of most of his songs. So knowing that he believes in God also i think shows it is about Him. Everyone has had a time in their life when they either keep making wrong decisions or bad things keep happening to them, and there seems to be no way out. this song is about when you hit rock bottom and realize the only way out is having faith and putting yourself into His hands. i have felt the exact same way and thought the exact same thing-i know you didnt bring me out here to drown- this line gives me strength because it helps me to know that no matter what happens if i look to Him he wont let me drown. Lifehouse is my all time favorite band and not because of Jason's goodlooks or amazing voice, it is because they use music and everything about it to create emotions and strengthen everyone. they see the power that music has and they use it. every one of their songs has a deep emotional meaning and that is hard to say for alot of artists.

Well this song can have different meanings to everyone and yeah, there are other (mythical) stories of characters walking on water... But the members of this band are open about being Christian so it wouldn't really make a lot of sense for an openly Christian group to write a song about another religions tradition

For me this song means something completely different. When he says "If I could just see you
everything would be alright" I think that symbolizes a man in the armed forces, particularly the Navy due to all the refrences of the ocean in the song, that wants to see his family again but is worried that everything has changed. And the verse, "I know you didn't bring me out here to drown, so why am I ten feet under and upside down? Barely surviving has become my purpose, cause I'm so used to living underneath the surface." I believe that symbolizes a person in the Navy that knows he has a reason for being there, but he can't figure it out and just wants to see his family again and go home. That's just what the song means to me, it's something different for everyone though.

In ancient Greek Mythology the giant hunter and son of the gods Orion walked on water.
Hindu, Buddhist [4], and Greek [5] traditions have stories about characters walking on water.

How can you say this is not about God? Its definitely referring to the story of Peter walking on water out to Jesus. He is saying that his life is like a storm but he will still walk on water towards Jesus and that he knows Jesus wont let him drown. And That Jesus will make everything alright. This one is kinda a no brainer.

It is my belief that certain songs can and will have different meanings for different individuals That is what SongMeanings.com is all about. A lot of the time, the meaning of a song depends on where one's head and heart is while listening.

To me, this song, with it's beautiful melody and haunting lyrics, metaphorically depicts a broken heart reaching out to his lost love. The pain of Heartbreak is evident in his voice. He still loves her.. misses her.. needs her and his heartache is still raw and very painful.

This may very well not be the message that Lifehouse was trying to get across, but this is what it means to me in the way that i can relate so much of it to myself.

It seems to be about a guy who's going through the hardest struggle of his life. an internal storm and he doesn't know how much longer he can take it. i think he loves someone. he loves someone so dearly but she doesn't feel the same. for whatever reason that they are not together he still loves her more than his heart can comprehend and it's killing him because his love is the only thing keeping him alive but she doesn't feel the same. She never meant to hurt him "i know you didn't mean to bring me out here to drown, so why am i ten feet inder and upside down?". even though she never intended to hurt him, he can't get over it. The only thing that could make things better is if she changed her feelings, if she could see him. it's the only thing and it could be so simple to make things alright. he is wishing that a miracle could happen to make things alright again "and i will walk on water." If there were miracles then things would play out right. she would catch him if he fell, he'd get lost in her eyes, and things would happen as they were meant to be. It could all be so simple, but it seems like such a distant miracle. There will only ever be one way out of this storm.

I like that this song can be taken religiously and romantically.

Right now, I see it as more romantic. It reminds me of this guy I'm crazy about (who is, in turn, crazy about me ^^) who is currently at basic training. Sometimes I feel like I'm in a "storm" and if I could even so much as get another letter in the mail from him, it would all be that much easier to endure. I can't wait to see him again. ^^

Anyway, great song. One of my all-time favorites.

JayMeister19, sorry but how do you know that you cant feel those feelings from God? cause I felt them! I felt the strongest emotions praying, so strong that sometimes I couldnt help crying for how it involved me. but I know I'm really lucky because it's a gift. for me for examples, telling someone "I know you didn't bring me out here to drown" it would be strange cause in my own life I know none will ever take me to anywhere, only God will. but this is only my opinion, I just wanted you to understand that everyone sees things differently! so you could even accept the fact that this song is probably about God

This song is so emotional it cant possibly be about God, God doesnt give you those feelings, its obviously about someone who he's lost and misses them and how they were always there for him but now theres no one to catch him

People have different lives, personalities, experiences in life, faith etc... thats why some people can see it in a way that other people cant just understand. So what do they do? They fight for their opinion.. It's like looking at a double sided picture, they couldn't truly understand til they tried to see all sides

I think this song is supposed to be unturpreted however it fits you. Whether the "you" in the song is a friend, a lover, a family memeber, or anyone else close to you (even god, if that's what you believe in), it applies to the listener. I think it is about how you can get lost in a "storm" and get way too far in over your head without even knowing it. "The ocean's shapeless form" is all the uncertainties that you may feel and the "water getting harder to tread" is the difficulty in getting through it. But somehow, through it all, that one person (whoever it may be) can get you through it. I think the song is talking about how even the ones we love bring us to these difficult places in our lives and sometimes even hurt us, but if they are truely important to us, they will some how get us through it and everything will be all right. We will "walk on water" or take risky chances for our loved ones, and if we can't get through it, they will "catch is if we fall." The people who you can truely trust and believe in are the ones who do this to us, but ulimately save us in the end.

I know the song is about God,
and half of the times i listen to it, God is what comes to my mind.

the Storm, is our problems, which all of us have,
and "if i could just see.... would turn to light"
refers to much more personally Jesus,
who is "the light of the world"

"i would walk on water"
biblical allusion to jesus walking on water,
and he would be able to walk on water, after seeing Jesus right?
so also ties in with believing after seeing,(& i know it does not literraly mean sight) like Peter who doubted Jesus and fell into the water.
So yes i do agree the song was written for God, but at times i cannot help but think about it as a sense of someone ( that we love/are inlove with)

the "i will walk on water" gives love that power of being able of preforming miracles,
"everything would be alright" makes me think of that peace that love brings to us,
the literal, "if i could just see you, everything would be alright" means as literal as the "storm" is not being able to see that person, so upon seeing them, one is able to walk on water, and everything would be alright,

the whole " i know u didn't bring me out here to drown
so why am i ten feet under and upside down
barely surviving has become my purpose
cause i'm so used to living underneath the surface"

makes me think that someone has unintentilly hurt us maybe by the not being there to be seen,

So guys dont fight it, the question that i read is "what does this song mean to you?"
as in the personal way,
so everyone is entitled to their own interpertation,
even if it could be considered lame,
we all get different feelings, that is what music does to us, so lets not insult each other, but rather open our minds.

I know as a songwriter you've truly achieved success when you can create a song that can be interpreted in many forms. Remember this is an art form! (colors of paint, textures) Consciously one can write a song that relates to religion, faith, a love, the earth and other life experiences. I know we use to do it all the time. The tough part is not using cliches! There is no right or wrong, 100% accurate references, just varying opinions, ideas, concepts. Listeners may come up with some that the artist had NO IDEA even existed in their interpretation and they wrote the song! What's most important is that the listener/interpreter can relate, feels emotion and has an experience.
Jason , the lead singer wrote this song at 16 before he made it big. I am guessing but it was probably relationship related. This song is successful in that one can find many interpretations.

Excerpt from their website, -“This time around it was about not having any preconceived notions,” confesses Jason. “It was about letting the tape machine roll and getting the music down spontaneously. I’m at a place where it doesn’t matter to me what other people think. I’m comfortable being myself. I’m writing from an honest place, not thinking about who’s going to hear it, what they’re going to think or how they’re going to interpret it. The lyrics can’t be contrived. They have to hit you right in the heart.”
One song that does just that is the album finale, “Storm,” which Wade wrote at 16 “when I was going through hard times,” and was included on the band’s first indie record, 1,000 copies of which were pressed back when they were called Bliss. The original version has been circulated over the Internet by the group’s fans and was even licensed by the television show So You Think You Can Dance. Wade decided to re-record the song when he realized how much it meant to people.
“That was fun to record because of its starkness,” says Jason. “We love the idea of the title, surrounded by negative space, like the a cappella beginning. Because when you’re lost in confusion, no matter how much is going on around you, you’re still alone.”

I love this song. The lyrics are just beautiful and it just gives me chills. It's amazing.
The meaning is either about a special person in his life that impacted him greatly and makes him stronger and holds him together or about God.
The guy is kind of lost and confused about life and he's just overwhelmed and it's been like this ever since he can remember and it's getting harder.
He thinks that if just by seeing God/the person, everything would be so much better just because he has them.
And after that, he could do the impossible and "will catch him if he falls" from where he is and everything will be alright if he has God/that person.
He knows God/that person didn't want him to suffer or be miserable and lost like he is. he's also just barely getting by and he's not used to things being so difficult.

It's a beautiful song. So powerful and moving. I just love it

to me, this song is about someone who has helped me through a rough patch that im going through

how long have i been in this storm
so overwhelmed by the ocean's shapeless form
waters getting harder to tread
with these waves crashing over my head
(this is me being overwhelmed with whats going on in my life)

if i could just see you
everything would be alright
if i had to see you
this darkness would turn into light
and i will walk on water
and you will catch me if i fall
and i will get lost into your eyes
and everything will be alright
and everything will be alright
(i know that when i see her ill be safe and she will look after me and "everything will be alright")

i know u didn't bring me out here to drown
so why am i ten feet under and upside down
(this is how at times what she is doing seems to make things worse but in the long runs it turns out to be for the better)

barely surviving has become my purpose
cause i'm so used to living underneath the surface
(ive been in this rough patch for so long and i spend my days jsut putting one foot in front of the other and "barely surviving")

if i could just see you
everything would be alright
if i could see you
this stormness would turn into light
and i will walk on water
and you will catch me if i fall
and i will get lost into your eyes
and everything will be alright
and i will walk on water
and you will catch me if i fall
and i will get lost into your eyes
and everything will be alright
(same as above)

and now everything is alright
everythings alright
(i see her and talk to her and for a little while everything is ok)

and thats just what it means to me
everyone has a different meaning because its one of those great songs
thats what makes its so powerful.

how about i think this is about anyone who makes life easier for you to live
its about the person that helps you survive

and if thats god for you then thats great for you
but if its a friend or a lover or a role model
then that is equally great

for me this makes me think of a great woman who i know that is basically a role model for me and she is the one who helps me make it through each day

whoever helps you survive, god or otherwise, then this can relate to them...

ok so im atheist and even i can see the god undertone in this song. but it also works for other things. like a boy who is troubled and doesn't know what he wants but he thinks he can figure it out if he can just be with this girl.
this song is sooo fucking stellar and by far the best of lifehouse.

To me this song means alot. And yes, as your friendly neighborhood christian, i beleive its about God. I'm a junior in high school who lives with his grandmother and she recently had a stroke and hopefully temporarily (through faith) lost the use of her left side. When I heard this song it reminded me that even when im going through things if i return my focus on God i/she will be alright. (If I could just see you...). If you are a christian please pray for her healing and my faith. If you aren't a christian, try it out anyways.lol
Thanks, God Bless.

The first time I heard this song it was on a mixed CD my friend gave me. I didn't have the song titles so I had no idea that it was Lifehouse. I cried, I balled, this song brought so many feelings and memories to my mind. Whenever I hear this song I get chills that run all the way down the back of my spine. To me, this song means promise. God's promise that he will always be there and that you can reach out to him even if you are drowning. "And I will walk on water, and you will catch me if I fall." That right there is the only think we need to know in life. I know everyone has different meanings to this song and a lot of them aren't religous but that's how I feel about this song.

Everyone is fighting their own personal battles...at "War" with themselves. We are so conditioned and consumed by our own grief, our loneliness, that before we even have a hold of it, it has a complete hold of us. At the end of the day, there is always that one person in your life...let it be God, a loved one, or your significant other who never fails to make your heart smile and make everything bad take a back seat...even if its brief - that momentary break is exactly what we need when life becomes too heavy & too often too much to take. They make life seem ok...at best make you believe life will be ok as soon as you are in their nest...seeking you through. This song breaks my heart...6 billion on this Earth, yet there is so much loneliness still... It makes the pain of losing the person I love that much more vivid...I often miss him so much that I literally can't breathe. Ironic...that I KNOW he feels the ultimate form of loneliness and now, so do I because I no longer have him because he won't let me.

I sit here as I listen...and the lyrics live within me frozen in time like a deep cut. I'm completely broken.

Nonetheless, this song is absolutely beautiful, it makes me feel in every sense of the word.

what an amazing amazing song. has to be one of their best in my opinion.

well, I definitely can see how many of you see this as spiritual song about God. Members of lifehouse are very religious and spiritual, so that claim definitly makes sense. Literally, I think you guys are right. Just looking at the lyrics it makes a lot of sense that this is about God. About trust, faith, and believing. About getting out of the treacherous storm and having everything be alright. "shapeless form", that adjective and choice of words really makes me think of some divine force beyond anyone’s control. But having that faith, that trust… “if I could just see you”….then he knows everything will be alright. It is the test of one’s faith and trust in the almighty God. Thinking more about this song and looking within the lyrics I keep seeing more and more how this is about that. However, songs are meant to be interpreted differently by each person. All depends on your perspective and how the song makes you feel.

The first time I heard this and when I slowly became obsessed with this I saw it as more of a love song. The only line that make me believe that this is not about God is the line "and I will get lost in your eyes". When I read that line I think more of a love type of song and not a spiritual one about a man and God. I see this whole song as a metaphor, I try not to look at things literally and I tend to overanalyze. And when I did that, I saw a love song. “How long have I been in this storm”….how long has he been in this rut of his life. An argument, an uncontrollable obstacle that has hit him. He keeps going further and further has his life is just a mess. “waters getting harder to tread”… “waves crashing over my head”. He can’t he even stand up straight. And the chorus in my opinion is if he sees her then everything will be alright. If she comes back to him, the “darkness will turn into light” and everything will be ok. It just shows the effect she has on him.

I guess the thing you take out of this song is the hope that always exists. Even if your in that obstacle of your life you can find your way out. Gotta believe, have faith, and trust. Find that someone or something that will get you outta of there whether it is love or your faith in God.
