Hee-hee
Hoo
Oh-oh
Oh-oh (hee)

Love ain't what it used to be
That is what they're tellin' me
Push it in, stick it out
That ain't what it's all about (oh)

He wanna do something keen to you
He wanna wrap his arms all around you, girl
He wanna shake it up, shake it down, doin' it right
He wanna jump back, half flap, doin' it right
He wanna lay you down, turn it up, shakin' it loose
He wanna fly high, nigh high, baby for you'se
He wanna motormouth, float around, baby the back
He wanna shake it up, shake it down, movin' 'round ha-ha

Love ain't what it used to be (hee)
That is what they're tellin' me
Push it in, stick it out
That ain't what it's all about (oh)

Susie like to agitate
Get the boy and make him wait
Mother's preachin' Abraham
Brothers, they don't give a damn (oh)

He wanna do something keen to you
He wanna wrap his arms all around you, girl
He wanna glue it up, keep it high, deep in the night
He wanna eyeball, get hard, playin' it right
He wanna turn the key, hurt the sheets, move to the left
He wanna hot scrub, hot love, makin' it wet
He wanna give hot, jump shot, move to the left
He wanna time bar, slam dunk, ha-ha-ha

Hoo
Keep it goin' (hoo)
Party down
Hoo, hoo

Love ain't what it used to be (ow)
That is what they're tellin' me
Push it in, stick it out
That ain't what it's all about (oh)

Sister says she love him some (she's doin' it, she's doin' it)
Got his Jimmy on the run (hoo, hee)
Mother's preaching Abraham (hee)
Brothers, they don't give a damn (oh)

(What? Ho)

Johnny's begging pretty please (keep the brother on his knees)
Keep the brother on his knees (hoo-hee)
Susie likes to agitate (keep doin' it, keep doin' it, hee)
Get the boy and make him wait (oh)

Sister's married to her hood

They doin' what they used to hate
Push it in, stick it out (keep doin' it, keep doin' it)

This song is Michael's opinion on young people's views on sex, like the kids that he talks to and stuff. It's difficult to write that without it sounding seedy, but I think its a serious message, paedo issues aside. I also think its about the trauma he feels his brother's less than private sex lives caused him when he was in the J5, hearing them screw groupies in the same room and stuff. I think that really messed him up and he's talking about it here; 'Holy Mary, mercy me. Can't believe the things I see...Brothers, they don't give a damn...'

I think this song is means that sex isn't everything, and that back then, love was real, not just about having sex without really loving that person. And when he says brothers, they don't give a d***, i'm pretty sure he means black men (usually the ghetto (no offense) ones. Although his brothers did always have sex with groupies when they were on too. I think many teenagers should listen to this song. Sex isn't what it's about.

    Song Meaning

Overall, this song questions sex and what it means, or shouldn't mean, to people. However there are also a few lyrics that discuss other issues in his life.

"Sister's married to a hood, saying that she got it good" He could mean sister as in any girl, but apparently Michael wasn't too keen on his sister Janet's first marriage. This may have something to do with his feelings on that.

"Mother's preaching Abraham, brothers they don't give damn" Michael's mother is a Jahova's Witness and brought her children up the same. However, Michael felt his brothers were somewhat unruly and cared more about having a good time and sleeping around.

The song is about La Toya's betrayal as she testified against her brother in Michael's child molestation trial in '91

Correction to thie lyrics: Above says "he wanna do something keen to you." But, he is saying "he wanna do something freaky to you."

I don't think Brothers in this context literally meant his brothers though.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
