Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
One night upon my motorcycle through the desert sped
And smashed my body so that all my friends thought I was dead
My sister held me close and whispered to my bleeding head
"You are the son of a motherfucker"
One, two, three, four
I shook all night and held her hand
Chocolate people, well, I'll be damned
Land of plenty, land of fun
To find out I'm Nimrod's son
Oh, bury me
Far away please
Bury me
Ha-ha
The joke has come upon me
In my motorcycle mirror, I think about the life I've led
And how my soul's been leaking out all the holes where I have bled
My image spoke to me, yes, to me it often said
"You are the son of incestuous union"
One, two, three
Now my head is clear, my roof has walls
My daughter's pure, my son is tall
Land of plenty, land of fun
To find out I'm Nimrod's son
Oh, bury me
Far away, please
Bury me
Ha-ha, ha-ha, ha-ha
The joke has come upon me
And smashed my body so that all my friends thought I was dead
My sister held me close and whispered to my bleeding head

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
YOU ARE THE SON OF A MOTHER FUCKER. Haha...literally.

Jjoe, just because Frank Black wasn't the product of incestuous union doesn't mean the song's a joke.
It's like listening to "Motorway to Roswell" and thinking "oh Frank Black is an alien."
He is most likely writing from another person's perspective...such as Nimrod's son...Anyways, Nimrod was the founder of Babylon, and a great hunter.
Random fact of the day!
The whole reason "Nimrod" got it's negative connotation is because Elmer Fudd was called Nimrod (since he's a hunter) and since he's such an idiot people associated it with idiocy.
@Audaciousmoose Ha! I love how culture can twist the meaning of something so easily. I remember seeing that Bugs Bunny cartoon as a kid. We used Nimrod as an insult when people did stupid things.

I'm pretty sure that his lyrics tend to stem far deeper than our interpretations. I realy don't think this song is just about t his little story he threw together about some dude whose mother is also his grandmother. I'm sure its biblical or mythilogical, and I'm pretty sure there's some crazy reason that he decided to sing about it.

Incest is a common theme in early Pixies stuff and this song is probably influenced by "Odeipus". Both the motorcycle rider and Opedipus discover they are products and participants of incest.
The lyrics are pretty clear; the rider realizes that he has been damned since birth and his whole life is a joke. The "Ha-ha Ha-ha" at the end of the song isn't a happy laugh, but an insane and disturbing one.
Sad stuff. : - (
Good song though. The Holiday Song is the sequal to it, I guess.
@lactosefreeman No, not influenced by Oedipus, but by Nimrod, the great grandson of Noah, who’s wife diefied him after his death and claimed he was reincarnated as Nimrod (or Gilgamesh), their offspring, technically making marrying him to his own mother......like the rest of the bible, it’s always good for a chuckle.

live this was great, and they played the holiday song right after it. maybe the two are related, or that could be a complete coincidence

It's a great song to get peoples attention at parties. Frank wasn't really the product of incestuous union surely? I think its all just a childish joke, though a good song.
@jjoe It’s a biblical reference.

Nimrod is in Genesis: 10
Well, actually, I don't think The Holiday Song and Nimrod's Son have anything to do with eachother. Maybe the person in The Holiday Song finally hooked up with his sister and the result is the guy in Nimrod's song, but likely, the pixies songs about incest are probably not connected.
oh shit, the mother fucker wasnt an insult it must be real. shit never really thought bout that
