Lyrics for I'm Amazed as interpreted by riffic

I'm Amazed Lyrics
- ...girls and fucked 'em at school
All I know is that
There were rumours he was into field hockey players
There were rumours
- So he applied basically
- He was gone the next day
- And went off with the team
- It's like - he was got - they'd just like
It was like so hush hush
They were so... quiet about it
And then the next thing you know...

The day before that I was wed
She went upstairs and she cut her hair away

I'm amazed (3x)

And when I was a little boy
A ball of string my parents took from me

I'm amazed (3x)

Before I died, I took my Honda
And packed it up, up, up to Arizona (honey)

I'm amazed , I'm amazed, I'm amazed (4x)

I though it was about discovering a friend is gay - the hockey players, running away, the girl cutting her hair short just before the wedding, but who knows?
As for the string and the Honda, the same.

The little spoken interlude isn't a part of the song. It has been recorded and performed live before and after Surfer Rosa, and never had anything to do with the field hockey banter.

I doubt the above lyrics are correct anyway; they happen to rhyme throughout the song. For instance:

And when I was a little boy
A ball of string my favorite toy (I'm amazed)

The day before that I was wed
She went upstairs and shot her head (I'm amazed)

Also, before Albini got his hands on it, it had this extra section, with the lyrics "all broke hearts will all mend, all broke hearts will all mend"

As for its meaning . . . maybe something to do with trying to mend severed ties?

Riffic screwed up the intro.
"So I applied basically."
"I went out for the team"
Both those lines are from the perspective of whoever she's talking about.

The lyrics are very clear in both the Purple Tape and in Surfer Rosa that it's

The day before that I was wed
She went upstairs, and shot her head away

Well when I was a little boy
A ball of string was my favorite toy

And the spoken prelude isn't even on the Purple Tape, so it's deffinitely not part of the song.

I wish I knew what this song meant...

skitr is right, most everyone gets those words wrong, "So I applied basically, I went out for the team" - definitely speaking in the voice of whomever Kim is talking about, or maybe speaking for Kim, jokingly, just like YOU FUCKIN DIE. When she found out he was into field hockey players SHE went out for the team. Jokingly.

The story at the beginning, which doesn't have anything to do with the song itself is the story of a teacher at Kim Deal's high school that had an affair with some of the female students and was quietly fired. Black is speaking (jokingly) on behalf of Deal, making fun of her, implying that she applied for the field hockey team to have an affair with the teacher. The story is in an interview in rolling stone around the time of Surfer Rosa's release.

Also it's "so I applied basically" not "he applied basically"

I am pretty sure that it goes:

"She went upstairs and shot up heroin"

but shot her head away works too, but I like the heroin version, it is darker.
